52.5.0.x
6-------
7
8Many, many little fixes, changes and additions done as part of the move
9to wxWindows 2.5 that I have forgotten about.
10
11Changed the import-startup-bootstrap process employed by wxPython such
12that wxWindows and the underlying gui toolkit are not initialized
13until the wxApp object is created (but before wxApp.OnInit is called.)
14This was required because of changes made to the C++ wxApp class.
15There are both benefits and potential problems with this change. The
16benefits are that you can import wxPython without requiring access to
17a GUI (for checking version numbers, etc.) and that in a
18multi-threaded environment the thread that creates the app object will
19now be the GUI thread instead of the one that imports wxPython. Some
20potential problems are that the C++ side of the "stock-objects"
21(wxBLUE_PEN, wxTheColourDatabase, etc.) are not initialized until the
22wxApp object is created, so you should not use them until then. Also,
23you will probably not be able to do any kind of GUI operation unless
24you have an app object first, (even on Windows where most anything was
25possible beofre.)
26
27Added wxMirrorDC.
28
29Added wxIconLocation
30
31wxPython's setup.py script now expects to use existing libraries for
32the contribs (gizmos, stc, xrc, etc.) rather than building local
33copies of them.
34

35Added Python wrappers for the new wxVScrolledWindow, wxVListBox, and
36wxHtmlListBox classes.

44Use wxSTC in the demo for displaying the soucre code of the samples.

49
502.4.1.2
51-------
52
53Added wxScrolledPanel from Will Sadkin
54
55Added SetShape method to top level windows (e.g. wxFrame.)
56
57Changed wxSWIG to not generate Python code using apply, (since it will
58be deprecated in the future) wxSWIG will use spam(*args, **kw) syntax
59instead. Also changed the generated __repr__ methods to be a bit more
60informative.
61
62Made the version number information more robust and uh, informative.
63Also added asserts to check that the major.minor versions of wxPython
64and wxWindows match.
65
66Added the new wx "renamer" package that will dynamically import from
67the wxPython package and rename wxFooBar --> FooBar. That means that
68people can do imports without "import *" and can use names like
69wx.Frame instead of wx.wxFrame. This is phase 1 of a full transition
70to the new namespace.
71
72Updated Scintilla to 1.52. I also changed it to use wxListCtrl
73instead of wxListBox for the AutoComplete window, added the ability to
74use custom bitmaps in the margin and in the AutoComplete windows, and
75worked out how to do proper clipping of child windows on wxGTK.
76
77Patrick O'Brien's PyCrust package has been renamed to Py and now
78includes several new tools. As part of the change the location of the
79pacakge has changed as well, it is now accessible as "from wxPython
80import py" (or "from wx import py" using the new namespace.) There
81are still some transition modules in the wxPython.lib.PyCrust package
82that will issue a warning and then import what is needed from the new
83package. These will be removed in a future release.
84
85Added __nonzero__ method to wxTreeItemId, wxBitmap, wxImage, wxFont,
86and most other classes that have an Ok or IsOK method. This allows
87code like "if obj: ..." to be the same as "if obj.IsOk(): ..."
88
89Toolbars on wxMac can now have controls on them.
90
91Added wxPython.lib.analogclock module based on samples that were
92passed back and forth on wxPython-users a while back.
93
94Added masked edit controls (wxPython.lib.maskededit) by Jeff Childers
95and Will Sadkin. Updated wxTimeCtrl to use MaskedEdit.
96
97When the __class__ of a dead object is replaced with _wxPyDeadObject
98the __del__ of the original class is now called first.
99
100Added wxTreeListCtrl. (Looks like a wxTreeCtrl embedded in a
101wxListCtrl, but actually is just giving multiple columns to a
102wxTreeCtrl.)
103
104Added wxFutureCall, a subclass of wxTimer that makes it easy to delay
105a call to any Python callable object.
106
107Added wxPy versions of wxPrintPreview, wxPreviewFrame, and
108wxPreviewControlBar so they can be derived from in Python and be able
109to override the C++ virtual methods.
110
111Simplified how the wxSizer methods are wrapped, changed the name of
112the "option" parameter to "proportion" to match the docs ("option" is
113still accepted for compatibility, but this will go away in a future
114release,) SetItemMinSize can now take a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter,
115and Spacers can be specified with a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter
116
117Added wxCursorFromBits.

121
122
1232.4.0.7
124-------
125Gave up on generating a warning upon the use of the old true/false or
126TRUE/FALSE values.
127
128Fixed wxGenericTreeCtrl (used on wxGTK and wxMac for wxTreeCtrl) so
129that it can successfully handle lots of nodes instead of overflowing
130when the virtual height of the widget overflowed a 16-bit value.
131
132Fixed the typemap that converts strings to wxColours to also accept
133unicode.
134
135Fixed problem where the wrong class name could sometimes be used for
136OOR.
137
138Fixed an interpreter lock problem in the __eq__ and __ne__ methods in
139wxSize and etc.
140
141Updated PyCrust to version 0.9
142
143Instead of always logging C++ assertions, added wxPYAPP_ASSERT_LOG
144flag to turn it on. In most cases turning it into an exception (the
145default behavior) is enough. See below in the 2.3.4.1 notes for more
146details.
147
148
149
150
1512.4.0.6 (a.k.a. the I'm so stupid release)
152-------
153The new deprecation class for the old true/false symbols can now be
154returned from OnInit. And I promise to be sure I am testing what I
155think I am testing in the future...
156
157
158
1592.4.0.5 (a.k.a. the blame it on Kevin release)
160-------
161A few little but annoying bug fixes.
162
163Updated pycolourchooser.
164
165Updated to 0.9b of PyCrust.
166
167
168
1692.4.0.4
170-------
171Added missing wxRect methods
172
173Add OOR support for wxApp objects too.
174
175Added wxCursorFromImage, which works on wxMSW and wxGTK so far.
176
177All platforms now send EVT_DESTROY_WINDOW. Be warned that at the time
178the event is sent the window is in the process of being deconstructed,
179and so calling some (most?) methods of the window itself may cause
180problems.
181
182Fixed SF Bug #689481, a method in the OGL wrappers was using the wrong
183return type.
184
185Fixed SF Bug #689958, an endless loop in printout.py.
186
187Added EVT_WINDOW_CREATE_ID and EVT_WINDOW_DESTROY_ID so these events
188can be associated with a specific window ID and more easily caught by
189the parent window.
190
191Fixed copy-paste error in wxListCtrl.GetFirstSelected.
192
193Added missing Init method (and an overloading wrapper) to wxLocale
194wrapper.
195
196Added a wxBitmap.SetMaskColour convenience method.
197
198Changed how the dynamic event tables (used for all Python wx classes,
199C++ wx classes typically use static event tables) are searched such
200that they behave from a Python perspective more like the static tables
201in C++. Namely that if there are identical event bindings in a base
202Python class and a derived Python class that the one in the derived
203class will be found first and that if Skip is called that the one in
204the base class will still be found instead of skipping directly to the
205static stable in the C++ class.
206
207Switched to using True/False in the wxPython lib and demo instead of
208true/false or TRUE/FALSE to prepare for the new boolean type and
209constants being added to Python. Added code to wx.py to test for the
210existence of the new constants and to create suitable values if not
211present.
212
213Added some static wxApp functions that help with integration with the
214Mac UI. They are no-ops on other platforms so it doesn't hurt to
215always call them. The functions are:
216
217 wxApp_GetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
218 wxApp_GetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
219 wxApp_GetMacAboutMenuItemId
220 wxApp_GetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
221 wxApp_GetMacExitMenuItemId
222 wxApp_GetMacHelpMenuTitleName
223 wxApp_SetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
224 wxApp_SetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
225 wxApp_SetMacAboutMenuItemId
226 wxApp_SetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
227 wxApp_SetMacExitMenuItemId
228 wxApp_SetMacHelpMenuTitleName
229
230Refactored, enhanced and added capabilities for the DrawXXXList
231functions, inspired by code from Chris Barker.
232
233The wxWindows .mo language catalog files are now installed in a
234subdirectory of the wxPython package dir on MSW since that platform
235doesn't have a standard place for them.
236
237Added missing deselect methods for wxGrid.
238
239Fixed typemaps for wxGridCellCoordsArray.
240
241Updated to the 0.9a version of PyCrust
242
243
244
2452.4.0.2
246-------
247Several bug fixes.
248
249Added wxIntCtrl from Will Sadkin.
250
251Added wxPyColourChooser by Michael Gilfix.
252
253
254
255
2562.4.0.1
257-------
258No major new features since 2.3.4.2, mostly bug fixes and minor
259enhancements.
260
261Added function wrappers for the common dialogs from Kevin Altis. See
262wxPython/lib/dialogs.py for more details.
263
264
265
2662.3.4.2
267-------
268Various bug fixes.
269
270
271
2722.3.4.1
273-------
274Updated XRCed and wxTimeCtrl contribs.
275
276Show a couple new wxGrid features in the demo.
277
278Several bug fixes in wxWindows.
279
280Added wxHtmlFilter.
281
282wxASSERT and related C++ runtime diagnostics are now converted to
283Python exceptions. When an assert happens a wxPyAssertionError
284(which derives from AssertionError) exception is created and when
285control returns back to the Python code that invoked the C++ API it
286will be raised. The same exception restrictions are in place as
287before, namely that exceptions can't cross from one Python layer
288through C++ to another Python layer. That simply means that if you
289want to catch wxPyAssertionError or any other exception that you need
290to do it before control returns to C++ at the end of your event
291handler or callback code. There is some test code in demo/wxButton.py
292you can use to play with this new feature.
293
294Added some methods to wxApp (SetAssertMode and GetAssertMode) that let
295you control how C++ assertions are processed. Valid modes are:
296wxPYAPP_ASSERT_SUPPRESS, wxPYAPP_ASSERT_EXCEPTION, and
297wxPYAPP_ASSERT_DIALOG. Using _SUPPRESS will give you behavior like
298the old "final" builds and the assert will be ignored, _EXCEPTION is
299the new default described above, and _DIALOG is like the default in
3002.3.3.1 and prior "hybrid" builds. You can also combine _EXCEPTION
301and _DIALOG if you wish, although I don't know why you would.
302
303You can now overload OnInitGui, OnExit and OnAssert in your classes
304derived from wxApp.
305
306Added GetSelectedCells, GetSelectionBlockTopLeft,
307GetSelectionBlockBottomRight, GetSelectedRows, GetSelectedCols nethods
308to wxGrid.
309
310Added Python == and != operators for some basic classes
311
312Fixed the Python wrappers for wxInputStream so they no longer block
313when reading from a wxProcess on wxGTK. They now work more or less as
314they did before 2.3.3.1 but the dual meaning of eof() has been
315removed. There is now a CanRead() method that lets you know if there
316is data waiting to be read from the pipe.
317
318Fixed method name clash in wxIEHtmlWin, renamed Refresh to RefreshPage.
319
320Added Throbber from Cliff Wells to the library and the demo.
321
322Windows installer prompts to uninstall old version first.
323
324Added wxPython.lib.evtmgr by Robb Shecter, which is an easier, more
325"Pythonic" and more OO method of registering handlers for wxWindows
326events using the Publish/Subscribe pattern.
327
328Added wxPython.lib.popupctl by Gerrit van Dyk which is a combobox-like
329gizmo for poping up arbitrary controls. It is currently using
330wxDialog because of some issues with wxPopupWindow...
331
332Added wxPython.lib.gridmovers by Gerrit van Dyk which facilitates the
333dragging of columns and/or rows in a wxGrid.
334
335Added wxPython.lib.multisash by Gerrit van Dyk which is a nice
336implementation of allowing the user to split a window any number of
337times either horizontally or vertically, and to close the split off
338windows when desired.
339
340Added helpviewer tool that displays HTML books similarly to how MS
341HTMLHelp viewer does. Changed how the wxPythonDocs tarball is built
342and added a script to launch the doc viewer.
343
344
345
346
3472.3.3.1
348-------
b5a5d647
RD
349Added wxSplashScreen.
350
68320e40
RD
351Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
352
ce914f73 353Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 354
769a9cb2 355The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
bffe56c5
RD
356wxPopupWindow if available on the platform (and functioning correctly)
357so they can extend beyond the client area of the STC if needed.
769a9cb2 358
f74ff5ef
RD
359Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
360added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
361be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
362
afb810d9
RD
363Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
364data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
365convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 366
68bc8549
RD
367Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
368This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
369row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
370spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
371Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
372wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 373
18fc9fa3
RD
374Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
375
e9159fe8
RD
376Added wxBufferedDC.
377
a834585d 378Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45, and then again
f114b858 379to version 1.47, and one more time to 1.48! <wink>
1a2fb4cd 380
b96c7a38 381UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
382 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
383 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
384 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 385 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
386 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
387 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
388 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
389
390 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
391 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
392 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
393 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
394 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
395 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
396 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
397 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
398 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
399 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
400 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
401
402 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
403 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
404 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
405 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
406 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
407 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
408 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
409 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
410 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
411 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
412 method.
413
726fc00a 414Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 415
0e9b78ce
RD
416Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
417
68bc8549
RD
418Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
419
c8b34a16
RD
420A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
421whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
422to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
423crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
424pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
425Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
426a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
427for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 428
33ff77f6
RD
429Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
430wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 431derived classes.
33ff77f6 432
d55d6b3f
RD
433Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
434the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 435
94e36a51
RD
436Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
437application.
b5a5d647 438
3b867149
RD
439Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
440wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
441methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
442supported are:
443
444 DoMoveWindow
445 DoSetSize
446 DoSetClientSize
447 DoSetVirtualSize
448 DoGetSize
449 DoGetClientSize
450 DoGetPosition
451 DoGetVirtualSize
452 DoGetBestSize
453 InitDialog
454 TransferDataFromWindow
455 TransferDataToWindow
456 Validate
457 AcceptsFocus
458 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
459 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
460 AddChild
461 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 462
3b867149
RD
463 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
464 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
465
466Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
467DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
468
a66212dc
RD
469Added wxArtProvider.
470
471Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
472(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
473are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
474something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
475implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
476
477Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
478
f9b24f07
RD
479Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
480creating a ScrolledPanel.
481
3eb221f6
RD
482Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
483other menu stuff.
c731eb47 484
3eb221f6
RD
485Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
486ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 487C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 488so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 489
763d71e4
RD
490Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
491modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
492transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
493tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 494win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
763d71e4 495
5fea3204
RD
496Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
497so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
498respond to mouse events and etc.
499
d6a3401d
RD
500Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
501on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
502
f6f98ecc 503Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c 504import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
a6151d99
RD
505tools in your own scripts or apps as needed. On Linux and OS X the
506tool scripts are installed to {prefix}/bin so you should be able to
507easily launch them from the command line. For example, PyCrust can be
508started with just the "pycrust" command.
bd4b9c8c 509
3b867149
RD
510Added a sample to the demo that catches various key events and
511displays the details of the event.
512
af83019e
RD
513Added wxWizard, wxWizardPage, wxWizardPageSimple and wxPyWizardPage.
514
628c7f79
RD
515Added wxXmlResourceHandler which allows you to create custom handlers
516for nonstandard class types in XRC resources. See the demo for an
517example.
518
1e4a197e
RD
519Added wxPython.lib.mixins.rubberband module from Robb Shecter.
520
521Added wxTimeCtrl from Will Sadkin.
763d71e4 522

550Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
551Rolinsky.
552
553Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
1e4a197e
RD
554default C++ constructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
555corresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
09f3d4e6
RD
556creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
557as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
558passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
559resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
560the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
561etc.
562
fe0aca37 563Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl

RD
564accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
565from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
566means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
567are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
568wxSTC flag accordingly.

589The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
590wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
591that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
592created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
593exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
594original C++ pointer.

634additional columns for each item. The classes are
635wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,

RD
639Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
640from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
641wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
642visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a

705Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
706convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
707converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
708containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
709included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
710specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
711compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
712convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
713wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
714the implementation.

736 GetGridWindow
737 GetGridRowLabelWindow
738 GetGridColLabelWindow
739 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
740
741Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
742representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
743On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
744
745
746***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
747 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
748 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
749 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
750 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
751 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
752 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
753 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
754 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
755 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
756 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
757 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
758 use weak references.)
759
760 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
761 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
762 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
763 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
764 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
765 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
766 object-type related oddities to me.
767***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
768
769There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
770in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython

772finally got done.
9416aa89
RD

834Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into

837the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b

839wxPython/src/export.h
840
841Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate

RD
845Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a

850that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
851
852Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
853
854Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
855mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
856

863New in 2.2.2
864------------
865
866Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
867Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
868from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
869that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
870releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
871have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
872interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
873some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
874how things work.
875
876I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
877of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
878This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
879builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
880use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
881platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
882wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
883install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
884using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
885
886Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
887contributed by Joerg Baumann.
888
889Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
890get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
891get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
892stdin.
893
894Removed the old python sizers.
895
896Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
897and wxRealPoint.
898
899Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
900the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
901libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
902
903Lots of little fixes here and there.
904
905Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
906wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on

951WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
952Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
953handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
954confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
955coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
956generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
957the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
958modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.

993Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
994available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
995new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
996consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
997good...)
998
999Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
1000authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
1001mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
1002
1003Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
1004It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
1005in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
1006on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
1007needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
1008just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
1009method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
1010matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
1011them.
1012
1013Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
1014expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
1015defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
1016"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
1017
1018I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
1019wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
1020wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
1021but I've included a very readable source file in the
1022wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
1023can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
1024http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
1025until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
1026provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

RD
1035Updated wxMVCTree and added a demo for it, also fixed layout on GTK
1036and some flicker problems.
1037
1038Added a wrapper class for the Visualization ToolKit (or VTK) in the
1039wxPython.lib.vtk module. (http://www.kitware.com/)
1040
1041Fixed wxTreeCtrl.SetItemImage and GetItemImage to recognise the new
1042"which" parameter.
1043
1044Added wxPython.lib.spashscreen from Mike Fletcher.
1045
1046Added wxPython.lib.filebrowsebutton also from Mike Fletcher.
1047
1048Renamed wxTreeCtrl.GetParent to GetItemParent to avoid a name clash
1049with wxWindow.GetParent.
1050
1051Added wxIntersectRect to compute the intersection of two wxRect's.
1052It is used like this:
1053
1054 intersect = wxIntersectRect(rect1, rect2)
1055
1056If r1 and r2 don't intersect then None is returned, otherwise the
1057rectangle representing the intersection is returned.
1058
1059Some bug fixes for Clipboard and Drag-n-Drop.
1060
9b3d3bc4 1061Rotated text!!! WooHoo! (See wxDC.DrawRotatedText())

RD
1062
1063Added a set of Generic Buttons to the library. These are simple
1064window classes that look and act like native buttons, but you can have
1065a bit more control over them. The bezel width can be set in addition
1066to colours, fonts, etc. There is a ToggleButton as well as Bitmap
9e57c2a0

1067versions too. They should also serve as a good example of how to
1068create your own classes derived from wxControl.

1070The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
1071wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
1072but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
1073support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
1074methods look like this:
1075
1076 def AddTool(ID,
1077 bitmap,
1078 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
1079 toggle = FALSE,
1080 clientData = NULL,
1081 shortHelpString = "",
1082 longHelpString = "")
1083
1084 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
1085 bitmap,
1086 shortHelpString = "",
1087 longHelpString = "",
1088 toggle=FALSE)
1089
1090
1e4a197e 1091There are also corresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
9b3d3bc4
RD
1092that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.
1093
9e57c2a0 1094Added a wrapper for the new PCX and TIFF ImageHandlers.

1116What's new in 2.1.11
1117--------------------
1118Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
1119syncronized.
1120
1121wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
1122wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
1123itself.
1124
1125Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
1126being added. This should remove the need for our
1127wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
1128
1129wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
1130no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
1131probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
1132a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
1133an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
1134
1135Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
1136
1137Added new HTML printing classes.
1138
1139Added wxWindow.GetHandle
1140
1141Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
1142it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
1143(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
1144wxPoint.)
1145
1146Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
1147processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
1148thread from other threads.
1149
1150Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
1151
1152Added wxFontEnumerator.
1153
1154Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
1155
1156wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
1157Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
1158
1159Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
1160
1161Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on
1162wxGTK...
1163
1164Added an MVC tree control from Bryn Keller to the library.
1165

1168
1169What's new in 2.1.5
1170-------------------
1171This is a quick bug-fix release to take care of a few nasties that
1172crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
1173major features.
1174
1175
1176
1177What's new in 2.1.4
1178--------------------
1179
1180This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
1181wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
1182binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
1183wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
1184To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
1185the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
1186
1187Now back to what's new...
1188
1189Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
1190
1191Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
1192
1193Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
1194of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
1195anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
1196list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
1197memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
1198great!
1199
1200Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
1201SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
1202default sort order.
1203
1204Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
1205either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
1206example, the following are equivallent:
1207
1208 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
1209 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
1210
1211Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
1212handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
1213is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
1214understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
1215pages. See the demo for an example.
1216
1217A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
1218wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
1219
1220Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
1221
1222Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
1223versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
1224warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
1225disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
1226the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
1227added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
1228smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
1229that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
1230not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
1231wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
1232portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
1233further details.
1234
1235Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
1236wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
1237accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
1238directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
1239that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
1240Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
1241for more info and examples in future releases.
1242
1243Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
1244from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
1245wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
1246all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
1247different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
1248columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
1249to use them.
1250
1251Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
1252that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
1253the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
1254method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
1255in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
1256of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
1257in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
1258there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
1259enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
1260be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
1261pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
1262
1263I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
1264years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
1265object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
1266value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
1267sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
1268them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
1269default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
1270creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
1271to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
1272back again the next time something is written. (You can call
1273app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
1274redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
1275object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
1276class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
1277RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
1278wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
1279
1280 class MyApp(wxApp):
1281 outputWindowClass = MyClass
1282
1283 def OnInit(self):
1284 frame = MyFrame()
1285 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
1286 return true
1287
1288Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
1289wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
1290your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
1291to really screw things up.
1292
1293Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
1294in the wxWindows docs...
1295
1296Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
1297shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
1298shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
1299that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
1300frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
1301bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
1302a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
1303problems...)
1304
1305
1306
1307
1308What's new in 2.1b3
1309--------------------
1310
1311This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
1312
1313Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
1314for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
1315patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
1316old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
1317features:
1318
1319 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
1320 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
1321 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
1322
1323 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
1324
1325 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
1326 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
1327 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
1328 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
1329
1330
1331There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
1332raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
1333Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
1334see distrib/build.py for more details.
1335
1336wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
1337two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
1338takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
1339interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
1340
1341
1342
1343
1344
1345What's new in 2.1b2
1346--------------------
1347
1348Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
1349
1350Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
1351provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
1352their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
1353It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1354line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1355
1356It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1357process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1358prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1359is being unloaded by Python.
1360
1361I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1362make wxPython look bad.
1363
1364wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1365wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1366
1367Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1368
1369You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1370wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1371
1372Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1373code to show how to use it.
1374
1375Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1376matches MSW's.
1377
1378Added wxGrid.GetCells
1379
1380Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1381wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1382
1383Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1384wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1385
1386Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1387 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1388
1389Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1390objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1391a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1392
1393Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1394data transfer.
1395
1396Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1397
1398New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1399for unix systems.
1400
1401Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1402
1403SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1404in wx.cpp.
1405
1406
1407
1408
1409
1410What's new in 2.1b1
1411--------------------
1412Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1413item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1414wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1415
1416Added the Printing Framework.
1417
1418Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1419version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1420data after loading each extension module.
1421
1422Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1423wxWindows classes.
1424
1425Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1426symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1427when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1428
1429wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1430of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1431types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1432not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1433
1434
1435
1436What's new in 2.0b9
1437-------------------
1438Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1439
1440Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1441wxPython application.
1442
1443Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1444
1445Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1446associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1447this feature off.
1448
1449Added wxSafeYield function.
1450
1451OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1452
1453Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1454how it all works.
1455
1456The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1457DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1458
1459Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1460
1461Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1462wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1463
1464Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1465
1466Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1467methods.
1468
1469
1470
1471What's new in 2.0b8
1472-------------------
1473Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1474
1475Several missing methods from various classes.
1476
1477Various bug fixes.
1478
1479
1480
1481What's new in 2.0b7
1482-------------------
1483Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1484
1485Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1486
1487
1488
1489What's new in 2.0b6
1490-------------------
1491Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1492Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1493
1494
1495What's new in 2.0b5
1496-------------------
1497Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1498reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1499wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1500wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1501with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1502
1503I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1504in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1505have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1506diverges from wxWindows.
1507
1508Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1509window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1510it should just work... More news on this later.
1511
1512Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1513
1514Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1515wxRegConfig class.
1516
1517As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1518
1519
1520
1521What's new in 0.5.3
1522-------------------
1523Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1524
1525Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1526compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1527
1528
1529
1530What's new in 0.5.0
1531-------------------
1532Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1533wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1534namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1535prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1536
1537Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1538
1539Made the events work for wxGrid.
1540
1541Added wxConfig.
1542
1543Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1544
1545Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1546objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1547
1548Other assorted fixes and additions.

1553What's new in 0.4.2
1554-------------------
1555
1556wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1557static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1558<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1559down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1560DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1561because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1562
1563The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1564must have been a different issue all along...

1568What's New in 0.4
1569-----------------
1570
15711. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1572Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1573linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1574extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1575And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1576version segfault shortly after starting up.
1577
15782. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1579
15803. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
