RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35

RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
b0e5c039
RD
96Added wxPyWindow and wxPyControl which are just like their wx
97counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
117
118 If there are other methods that should be supported please let me
119 know.
120
121Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
122DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
123
a66212dc
RD
124Added wxArtProvider.
125
126Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
127(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
128are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
129something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
130implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
131
132Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
133
f9b24f07
RD
134Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
135creating a ScrolledPanel.
136
3eb221f6
RD
137Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
138other menu stuff.
c731eb47 139
3eb221f6
RD
140Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
141ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 142C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 143so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 144
763d71e4
RD
145Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
146modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
147transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
148tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
46e10fde 149win32com got rid of the tstate...
763d71e4 150
5fea3204
RD
151Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
152so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
153respond to mouse events and etc.
154
d6a3401d
RD
155Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
156on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
157
f6f98ecc 158Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c
RD
159import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
160tools in your own scripts or apps as needed.
161
763d71e4 162
3bd1e033 163
b8510c2f 164
4268f798 1652.3.2.1
71f1334b 166-------
4268f798
RD
167Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
168well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
169without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
170
171Added some patches from library contributors.
172
173
174
ebf4302c 1752.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
176-----
177Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
178EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
179wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
180and a demo to show them in action.
181
fea018f8
RD
182Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
183http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 184
c7e7022c 185Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 186
00b6c4e3 187Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 188
09f3d4e6
RD
189Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
190Rolinsky.
191
192Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 193default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
194coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
195creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
196as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
197passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
198resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
199the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
200etc.
201
fe0aca37 202Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
203accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
204from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
205means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
206are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
207wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 208
6d19860f
RD
209Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
210column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
211using wxColumnSorterMixin.
212
53fe40ba 213Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 214
6d8b4f8d 215Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 216
431f4c16 217Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 218
19a97bd6
RD
219Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
220are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
221multi-processor machine.
222
76bfdc78
RD
223Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
224messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
225
0122b7e3
RD
226Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
227
71f1334b
RD
228The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
229wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
230that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
231created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
232exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
233original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 234
9d37f964
RD
235Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
236DrawPointList.
237
79f1bf32
RD
238Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
239
729f4276
RD
240Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
241text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 242
71f1334b 243Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
244and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
245of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
246browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
247if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
248wx-dev list.
249
250Added wxStopWatch.
251
252Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
253
c0c84fa0
RD
254Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
255will now Disconnect the event.
256
257Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
258
7dbce44a
RD
259Added wxFileHistory.
260
71f1334b 261Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 262by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 263this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
264same document.
265
611dc22c
RD
266Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
267
78e8819c
RD
268Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
269Feuer.
270
271Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
272were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
273additional columns for each item. The classes are
274wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
275wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
276also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 277
4a61305d
RD
278Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
279from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
280wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
281visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
282SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
283wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
284details.
285
b37c7e1d 286
fea018f8
RD
287
288
286e2db6 2892.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
290-----
291Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
292code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
293on a custom event handler for example.)
294
d56cebe7
RD
295Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
296GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
297
298Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
299subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
300
301Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
302
303Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
304
286e2db6
RD
305Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
306
307Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
308
bf7945ce 309
9416aa89
RD
310
3112.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
312-----
313Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 314glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
315
316Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
317wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
318ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
319
320Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
321
1af9e5c5 322Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
323wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
324colour database.
325
6e18ca6c
RD
326Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
327wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
328access from non-GUI threads.
329
1af9e5c5
RD
330wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
331use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 332
6bb38ab6
RD
333Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
334
6bb38ab6
RD
335Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
336that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
337
49875c53
RD
338Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
339wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
340
e0672e2f
RD
341Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
342it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 343
1af9e5c5
RD
344Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
345convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
346converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
347containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
348included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
349specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
350compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
351convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
352wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
353the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
354
355Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
356experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
357many refreshes.
358
d1679124
RD
359A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
360the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 361
d7ec6564 362Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 363
d7ec6564 364Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 365
3b36695d
RD
366Added wxToggleButton.
367
368Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 369
9416aa89
RD
370Added some methods to wxGrid:
371 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
372 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
373 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
374 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
375 GetGridWindow
376 GetGridRowLabelWindow
377 GetGridColLabelWindow
378 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
379
380Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
381representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
382On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
383
384
385***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
386 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
387 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
388 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
389 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
390 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
391 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
392 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
393 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
394 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
395 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
396 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
397 use weak references.)
398
399 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
400 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
401 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
402 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
403 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
404 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
405 object-type related oddities to me.
406***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
407
408There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
409in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
410specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
411finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
412
413Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
414list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 415
10e07c70 416Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 417
493f1553
RD
418Added wxWave.
419
30aaddfe
RD
420Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
421useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
422make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
423Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
424of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
425please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
426
25832b3f
RD
427Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
428by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
429wxPython/samples.
430
493f1553 431
19cf4f80
RD
432
433
b075a3bb
RD
4342.2.6
435-----
436
437No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
438changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
439
1b62f00d 440
19cf4f80 441
1b62f00d 4422.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
443-----
444
445New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
446that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
447a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
448it to a wxString using the default encoding.
449
450Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
451
452Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
453
454Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 455a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
456
457Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a

459
460Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
461bar after 2 seconds.
462
463Added wxJoystick.
464
465Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
466a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler

478wxPython/src/export.h
479

484Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
485wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the

487
488Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
489that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
490
491Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
492
493Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
494mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
495
496Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
497integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
498XML-RPC server.

502New in 2.2.2
503------------
504
505Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
506Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
507from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
508that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
509releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
510have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
511interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
512some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
513how things work.
514
515I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
516of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
517This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
518builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
519use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
520platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
521wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
522install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
523using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
524
525Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
526contributed by Joerg Baumann.
527
528Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
529get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
530get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
531stdin.
532
533Removed the old python sizers.
534
535Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
536and wxRealPoint.
537
538Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
539the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
540libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
541
542Lots of little fixes here and there.
543
544Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
545wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
546wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

590WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
591Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
592handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
593confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
594coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
595generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
596the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

632Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
633available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
634new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
635consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
636good...)
637
638Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
639authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
640mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
641
642Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
643It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
644in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
645on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
646needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
647just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
648method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
649matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
650them.
651
652Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
653expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
654defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
655"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
656
657I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
658wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
659wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
660but I've included a very readable source file in the
661wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
662can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
663http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
664until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool

709The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
710wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
711but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
712support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
713methods look like this:
714
715 def AddTool(ID,
716 bitmap,
717 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
718 toggle = FALSE,
719 clientData = NULL,
720 shortHelpString = "",

723 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
724 bitmap,
725 shortHelpString = "",
726 longHelpString = "",
727 toggle=FALSE)
728
729
730There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
731that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.

755What's new in 2.1.11
756--------------------
757Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
758syncronized.
759
760wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
761wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
762itself.
763
764Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
765being added. This should remove the need for our
766wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
767
768wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
769no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
770probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
771a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
772an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
773
774Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
775
776Added new HTML printing classes.
777
778Added wxWindow.GetHandle
779
780Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
781it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
782(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
783wxPoint.)
784
785Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
786processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
787thread from other threads.
788
789Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
790
791Added wxFontEnumerator.
792
793Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
794
795wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
796Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
797
798Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
799

812major features.
813
814
815
816What's new in 2.1.4
817--------------------
818
819This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
820wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
821binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
822wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
823To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
824the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
825
826Now back to what's new...
827
828Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
829
830Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
831
832Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
833of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
834anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
835list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
836memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
837great!
838
839Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
840SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
841default sort order.
842
843Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
844either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
845example, the following are equivallent:
846
847 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
848 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
849
850Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
851handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
852is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
853understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
854pages. See the demo for an example.
855
856A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
857wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
858
859Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
860
861Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
862versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
863warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
864disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
865the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
866added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
867smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
868that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
869not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
870wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
871portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
872further details.
873
874Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
875wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
876accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
877directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
878that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
879Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
880for more info and examples in future releases.
881
882Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
883from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
884wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
885all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
886different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
887columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
888to use them.
889
890Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
891that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
892the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
893method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
894in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
895of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
896in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
897there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
898enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
899be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
900pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
901
902I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
903years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
904object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
905value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
906sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
907them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
908default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
909creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
910to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
911back again the next time something is written. (You can call
912app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
913redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
914object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
915class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
916RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
917wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
918
919 class MyApp(wxApp):
920 outputWindowClass = MyClass
921
922 def OnInit(self):
923 frame = MyFrame()
924 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
925 return true
926
927Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
928wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
929your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
930to really screw things up.
931
932Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
933in the wxWindows docs...
934
935Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
936shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
937shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
938that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
939frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
940bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
941a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
942problems...)
943
944
945
946
947What's new in 2.1b3
948--------------------
949
950This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
951
952Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
953for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
954patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
955old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
956features:
957
958 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
959 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
960 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
961
962 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
963
964 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
965 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
966 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
967 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
968
969
970There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
971raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
972Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
973see distrib/build.py for more details.
974
975wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
976two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
977takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
978interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
979
980
981
982
983
984What's new in 2.1b2
985--------------------
986
987Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
988
989Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
990provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
991their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
992It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
993line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
994
995It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
996process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
997prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
998is being unloaded by Python.
999
1000I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1001make wxPython look bad.
1002
1003wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1004wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1005
1006Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1007
1008You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1009wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1010
1011Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1012code to show how to use it.
1013
1014Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1015matches MSW's.
1016
1017Added wxGrid.GetCells
1018
1019Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1020wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1021
1022Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1023wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1024
1025Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1026 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1027
1028Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1029objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1030a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1031
1032Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1033data transfer.
1034
1035Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1036
1037New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1038for unix systems.
1039
1040Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1041
1042SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1043in wx.cpp.
1044
1045
1046
1047
1048
1049What's new in 2.1b1
1050--------------------
1051Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1052item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1053wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1054
1055Added the Printing Framework.
1056
1057Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1058version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1059data after loading each extension module.
1060
1061Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1062wxWindows classes.
1063
1064Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1065symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1066when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1067
1068wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1069of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1070types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1071not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1072
1073
1074
1075What's new in 2.0b9
1076-------------------
1077Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1078
1079Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1080wxPython application.
1081
1082Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1083
1084Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1085associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1086this feature off.
1087
1088Added wxSafeYield function.
1089
1090OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1091
1092Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1093how it all works.
1094
1095The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1096DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1097
1098Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1099
1100Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1101wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1102
1103Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1104
1105Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1106methods.
1107
1108
1109
1110What's new in 2.0b8
1111-------------------
1112Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1113
1114Several missing methods from various classes.
1115
1116Various bug fixes.
1117
1118
1119
1120What's new in 2.0b7
1121-------------------
1122Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1123
1124Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1125
1126
1127
1128What's new in 2.0b6
1129-------------------
1130Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1131Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1132
1133
1134What's new in 2.0b5
1135-------------------
1136Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1137reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1138wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1139wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1140with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1141
1142I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1143in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1144have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1145diverges from wxWindows.
1146
1147Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1148window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1149it should just work... More news on this later.
1150
1151Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1152
1153Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1154wxRegConfig class.
1155
1156As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1157
1158
1159
1160What's new in 0.5.3
1161-------------------
1162Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1163
1164Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1165compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1166
1167
1168
1169What's new in 0.5.0
1170-------------------
1171Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1172wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1173namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1174prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1175
1176Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1177
1178Made the events work for wxGrid.
1179
1180Added wxConfig.
1181
1182Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1183
1184Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1185objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1186
1187Other assorted fixes and additions.
1188
1189
1190
1191
1192What's new in 0.4.2
1193-------------------
1194
1195wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1196static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1197<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1198down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1199DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1200because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1201
1202The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1203must have been a different issue all along...
1204
1205
1206
1207What's New in 0.4
1208-----------------
1209
12101. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1211Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1212linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1213extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1214And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1215version segfault shortly after starting up.
1216
12172. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1218
12193. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1220
1221----------------------------------------------------------------------
