1CHANGES.txt for wxPython
2
3----------------------------------------------------------------------
4
9416aa89
RD
5
62.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
7-----
8Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 9glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
10
11Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
12wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
13ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
14
15Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
16
1af9e5c5 17Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
18wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
19colour database.
20
6e18ca6c
RD
21Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
22wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
23access from non-GUI threads.
24
1af9e5c5
RD
25wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
26use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 27
6bb38ab6
RD
28Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
29
6bb38ab6
RD
30Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
31that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
32
49875c53
RD
33Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
34wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
35
e0672e2f
RD
36Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
37it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 38
1af9e5c5
RD
39Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
40convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
41converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
42containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
43included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
44specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
45compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
46convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
47wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
48the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
49
50Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
51experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
52many refreshes.
53
d1679124
RD
54A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
55the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 56
d7ec6564 57Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 58
d7ec6564 59Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 60
3b36695d
RD
61Added wxToggleButton.
62
63Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 64
9416aa89
RD
65Added some methods to wxGrid:
66 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
67 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
68 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
69 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
70 GetGridWindow
71 GetGridRowLabelWindow
72 GetGridColLabelWindow
73 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
74
75Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
76representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
77On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
78
79
80***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
81 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
82 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
83 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
84 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
85 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
86 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
87 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
88 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
89 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
90 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
91 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
92 use weak references.)
93
94 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
95 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
96 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
97 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
98 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
99 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
100 object-type related oddities to me.
101***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
102
103There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
104in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
105specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it.
106
107Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
108list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 109
419c299a
RD
110Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoiunt and others.
111
493f1553
RD
112Added wxWave.
113
30aaddfe
RD
114Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
115useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
116makeing the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList
117from Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored
118out of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
119please send it to me for inclusion in this package.

1242.2.6
125-----
126
127No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
128changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.

1b62f00d 130
19cf4f80 131
1b62f00d 1322.2.5

RD
133-----
134
135New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
136that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
137a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
138it to a wxString using the default encoding.
139
140Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
141
142Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
143
144Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 145a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
146
147Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
148column in report mode.
149
150Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
151bar after 2 seconds.
152
153Added wxJoystick.
154
155Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
156a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
157object, (usually a window.)
158
159Added wxNotifyEvent.Allow()
160
de20db99
RD
161Fixed GOBS of reference leaks.
162
1e7ecb7b
RD
163Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into
164multiple extension modules again. A Python CObject is used to allow
1b62f00d
RD
165the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
166the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b
RD
167libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
168wxPython/src/export.h
169
170Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
171extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
172utils. Will probably add more later.
173
1b62f00d
RD
174Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
175wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
176wxPrinterDC2 name.
177
178Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
179that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
180
181Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
182
183Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
184mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
185
186Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
187integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
188XML-RPC server.

192New in 2.2.2
193------------
194
195Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
196Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
197from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
198that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
199releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
200have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
201interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
202some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
203how things work.
204
205I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
206of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
207This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
208builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
209use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
210platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
211wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
212install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
213using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
214
215Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
216contributed by Joerg Baumann.
217
218Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
219get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
220get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
221stdin.
222
223Removed the old python sizers.
224
225Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
226and wxRealPoint.
227
228Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
229the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
230libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
231
232Lots of little fixes here and there.
233
234Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
235wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
236wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

250New in 2.2.0
251------------
252
253Added wxLog and friends.
254
255Added wxFrame.ShowFullScreen for MSW.
256
257Added PyShellWindow to the wxPython.lib package.
258
259
260
261New in 2.1.16
262-------------
263
264Added an attribute named labelDelta to the generic buttons that
265specifies how far to offset the label when the button is in the
266depressed state.
267
268Added wxTipProvider and friends. See the demo for an example.
269
270wxGrid can now change the cell highlight colour.
271
272Added wxDragImage.
273
274Fixed printing on wxGTK.
275
276Added wxDateTime, wxTimeSpan, and wxDateSpan to wxPython.utils.
277
278Added wxCalendarCtrl.
279
280WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
281Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
282handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
283confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
284coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
285generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
286the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
287modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.
288
289 OnChar
290 OnSize
291 OnEraseBackground
292 OnSysColourChanged
293 OnInitDialog
294 OnPaint
295 OnIdle
296 OnActivate
297 OnMenuHighlight
298 OnCloseWindow
299 OnScroll
300
301Added wxSpinCtrl.

304
305
306New in 2.1.15
164b735b
RD
307-------------
308
309Fixed wxTreeCtrl.HitTest to return both the tree item as well as the
310flags that clairify where the click was in relation to the item.
311
854862f5
RD
312Fixed thread state problem in wxTreeCtrl.GetBoundingBox and
313GetSelections.
164b735b 314
99ab9f3b
RD
315Fixed some problems in OGL. Also wxShape.SetClientData and
316.GetClientData can now deal with Python objects.
714d23b4 317
dcd38683 318Added wxListCtrl.SortItems and changed the demo to show how to use it.
714d23b4 319
f6bcfd97
BP
320Plugged a memory leak.
321
322Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
323available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
324new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
325consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
326good...)
327
328Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
329authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
330mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
331
332Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
333It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
334in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
335on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
336needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
337just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
338method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
339matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
340them.
341
342Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
343expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
344defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
345"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
346
347I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
348wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
349wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
350but I've included a very readable source file in the
351wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
352can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
353http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
354until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
355provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

359
9e57c2a0 360What's new in 2.1.13
6d75ea8f 361--------------------
9e57c2a0
RD
362Skipped a version number to match what has been released for wxGTK.
363
6d75ea8f
RD
364Updated wxMVCTree and added a demo for it, also fixed layout on GTK
365and some flicker problems.
366
367Added a wrapper class for the Visualization ToolKit (or VTK) in the
368wxPython.lib.vtk module. (http://www.kitware.com/)
369
370Fixed wxTreeCtrl.SetItemImage and GetItemImage to recognise the new
371"which" parameter.
372
373Added wxPython.lib.spashscreen from Mike Fletcher.
374
375Added wxPython.lib.filebrowsebutton also from Mike Fletcher.
376
377Renamed wxTreeCtrl.GetParent to GetItemParent to avoid a name clash
378with wxWindow.GetParent.
379
380Added wxIntersectRect to compute the intersection of two wxRect's.
381It is used like this:
382
383 intersect = wxIntersectRect(rect1, rect2)
384
385If r1 and r2 don't intersect then None is returned, otherwise the
386rectangle representing the intersection is returned.
387
388Some bug fixes for Clipboard and Drag-n-Drop.
389
9b3d3bc4 390Rotated text!!! WooHoo! (See wxDC.DrawRotatedText())
6999b0d8
RD
391
392Added a set of Generic Buttons to the library. These are simple
393window classes that look and act like native buttons, but you can have
394a bit more control over them. The bezel width can be set in addition
395to colours, fonts, etc. There is a ToggleButton as well as Bitmap
9e57c2a0
RD
396versions too. They should also serve as a good example of how to
397create your own classes derived from wxControl.
6d75ea8f 398
9b3d3bc4
RD
399The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
400wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
401but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
402support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
403methods look like this:
404
405 def AddTool(ID,
406 bitmap,
407 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
408 toggle = FALSE,
409 clientData = NULL,
410 shortHelpString = "",
411 longHelpString = "")
412
413 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
414 bitmap,
415 shortHelpString = "",
416 longHelpString = "",
417 toggle=FALSE)
418
419
420There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
421that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.
422
9e57c2a0 423Added a wrapper for the new PCX and TIFF ImageHandlers.
9b3d3bc4
RD
424
425wxRect now simulates attributes named left, right, top and bottom.
426
d2103cf2
RD
427Removed all non wx stuff from the glcanvas module since DA's PyOpenGL
428is better and compatible with the wxGLCanvas. You can get it at
429http://starship.python.net:9673/crew/da/Code/PyOpenGL.
9b3d3bc4 430
3af4e610 431Added some missing EVT_ functions.
9b3d3bc4 432
1b55cabf
RD
433Added Dirk Holtwic's editor classes to the wxPython.lib.editor
434package.
435
eec92d76
RD
436Changed all the "LIST" parameter names to "choices" to match the docs.
437
fe366bc9
RD
438More fixes for the wxFloatBar, and it now works on wxGTK even better
439than wxMSW! (The feat is accomplished by using the wxTB_DOCKABLE
440style flag instead of trying to float it ourselves.)
441
9b3d3bc4 442
6d75ea8f
RD
443
444
445What's new in 2.1.11
446--------------------
447Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
448syncronized.
449
450wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
451wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
452itself.
453
454Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
455being added. This should remove the need for our
456wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
457
458wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
459no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
460probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
461a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
462an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
463
464Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
465
466Added new HTML printing classes.
467
468Added wxWindow.GetHandle
469
470Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
471it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
472(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
473wxPoint.)
474
475Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
476processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
477thread from other threads.
478
479Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
480
481Added wxFontEnumerator.
482
483Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
484
485wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
486Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
487
488Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
489
490Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on
491wxGTK...
492
493Added an MVC tree control from Bryn Keller to the library.
494
495
496
497
498What's new in 2.1.5
499-------------------
500This is a quick bug-fix release to take care of a few nasties that
501crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
502major features.
503
504
505
506What's new in 2.1.4
507--------------------
508
509This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
510wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
511binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
512wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
513To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
514the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
515
516Now back to what's new...
517
518Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
519
520Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
521
522Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
523of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
524anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
525list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
526memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
527great!
528
529Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
530SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
531default sort order.
532
533Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
534either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
535example, the following are equivallent:
536
537 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
538 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
539
540Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
541handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
542is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
543understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
544pages. See the demo for an example.
545
546A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
547wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
548
549Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
550
551Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
552versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
553warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
554disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
555the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
556added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
557smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
558that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
559not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
560wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
561portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
562further details.
563
564Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
565wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
566accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
567directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
568that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
569Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
570for more info and examples in future releases.
571
572Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
573from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
574wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
575all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
576different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
577columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
578to use them.
579
580Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
581that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
582the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
583method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
584in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
585of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
586in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
587there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
588enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
589be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
590pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
591
592I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
593years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
594object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
595value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
596sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
597them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
598default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
599creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
600to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
601back again the next time something is written. (You can call
602app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
603redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
604object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
605class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
606RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
607wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
608
609 class MyApp(wxApp):
610 outputWindowClass = MyClass
611
612 def OnInit(self):
613 frame = MyFrame()
614 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
615 return true
616
617Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
618wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
619your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
620to really screw things up.
621
622Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
623in the wxWindows docs...
624
625Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
626shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
627shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
628that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
629frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
630bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
631a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
632problems...)

636
637What's new in 2.1b3
638--------------------
639
640This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
641
642Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
643for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
644patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
645old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
646features:
647
648 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
649 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
650 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
651
652 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
653
654 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
655 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
656 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
657 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
658
659
660There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
661raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
662Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
663see distrib/build.py for more details.
664
665wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
666two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
667takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
668interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
669
670
671
672
673
674What's new in 2.1b2
675--------------------
676
677Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
678
679Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
680provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
681their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
682It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
683line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
684
685It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
686process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
687prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
688is being unloaded by Python.
689
690I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
691make wxPython look bad.
692
693wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
694wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
695
696Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
697
698You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
699wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
700
701Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
702code to show how to use it.
703
704Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
705matches MSW's.
706
707Added wxGrid.GetCells
708
709Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
710wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
711
712Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
713wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
714
715Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
716 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
717
718Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
719objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
720a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
721
722Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
723data transfer.
724
725Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
726
727New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
728for unix systems.
729
730Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
731
732SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
733in wx.cpp.
734
735
736
737
738
739What's new in 2.1b1
740--------------------
741Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
742item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
743wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
744
745Added the Printing Framework.
746
747Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
748version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
749data after loading each extension module.
750
751Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
752wxWindows classes.
753
754Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
755symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
756when doing any Py_DECREFs.
757
758wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
759of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
760types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
761not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
762
763
764
765What's new in 2.0b9
766-------------------
767Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
768
769Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
770wxPython application.
771
772Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
773
774Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
775associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
776this feature off.
777
778Added wxSafeYield function.
779
780OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
781
782Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
783how it all works.
784
785The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
786DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
787
788Added a couple missing items from the docs.
789
790Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
791wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
792
793Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
794
795Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
796methods.
797
798
799
800What's new in 2.0b8
801-------------------
802Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
803
804Several missing methods from various classes.
805
806Various bug fixes.
807
808
809
810What's new in 2.0b7
811-------------------
812Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
813
814Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
815
816
817
818What's new in 2.0b6
819-------------------
820Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
821Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
822
823
824What's new in 2.0b5
825-------------------
826Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
827reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
828wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
829wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
830with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
831
832I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
833in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
834have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
835diverges from wxWindows.
836
837Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
838window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
839it should just work... More news on this later.
840
841Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
842
843Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
844wxRegConfig class.
845
846As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
847
848
849
850What's new in 0.5.3
851-------------------
852Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
853
854Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
855compatibility with the current wxWindows.
856
857
858
859What's new in 0.5.0
860-------------------
861Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
862wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
863namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
864prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
865
866Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
867
868Made the events work for wxGrid.
869
870Added wxConfig.
871
872Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
873
874Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
875objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
876
877Other assorted fixes and additions.
878
879
880
881
882What's new in 0.4.2
883-------------------
884
885wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
886static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
887<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
888down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
889DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
890because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
891
892The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
893must have been a different issue all along...
894
895
896
897What's New in 0.4
898-----------------
899
9001. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
901Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
902linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
903extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
904And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
905version segfault shortly after starting up.
906
9072. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
908
9093. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
910
911----------------------------------------------------------------------
