RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.

18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35

RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
3b867149
RD
96Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
97wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
117 AddChild
118 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 119
3b867149
RD
120 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
121 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
122
123Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
124DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
125
a66212dc
RD
126Added wxArtProvider.
127
128Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
129(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
130are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
131something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
132implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
133
134Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
135
f9b24f07
RD
136Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
137creating a ScrolledPanel.
138
3eb221f6
RD
139Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
140other menu stuff.
c731eb47 141
3eb221f6
RD
142Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
143ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 144C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 145so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 146
763d71e4
RD
147Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
148modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
149transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
150tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 151win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
763d71e4 152
5fea3204
RD
153Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
154so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
155respond to mouse events and etc.
156
d6a3401d
RD
157Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
158on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
159
f6f98ecc 160Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c
RD
161import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
162tools in your own scripts or apps as needed.
163
3b867149
RD
164Added a sample to the demo that catches various key events and
165displays the details of the event.
166
af83019e
RD
167Added wxWizard, wxWizardPage, wxWizardPageSimple and wxPyWizardPage.
168
763d71e4 169
3bd1e033 170
b8510c2f 171
4268f798 1722.3.2.1
71f1334b 173-------
4268f798
RD
174Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
175well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
176without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
177
178Added some patches from library contributors.
179
180
181
ebf4302c 1822.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
183-----
184Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
185EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
186wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
187and a demo to show them in action.
188
fea018f8
RD
189Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
190http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 191
c7e7022c 192Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 193
00b6c4e3 194Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 195
09f3d4e6
RD
196Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
197Rolinsky.
198
199Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 200default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
201coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
202creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
203as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
204passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
205resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
206the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
207etc.
208
fe0aca37 209Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
210accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
211from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
212means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
213are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
214wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 215
6d19860f
RD
216Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
217column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
218using wxColumnSorterMixin.
219
53fe40ba 220Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 221
6d8b4f8d 222Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 223
431f4c16 224Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 225
19a97bd6
RD
226Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
227are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
228multi-processor machine.
229
76bfdc78
RD
230Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
231messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
232
0122b7e3
RD
233Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
234
71f1334b
RD
235The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
236wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
237that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
238created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
239exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
240original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 241
9d37f964
RD
242Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
243DrawPointList.
244
79f1bf32
RD
245Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
246
729f4276
RD
247Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
248text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 249
71f1334b 250Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
251and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
252of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
253browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
254if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
255wx-dev list.
256
257Added wxStopWatch.
258
259Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
260
c0c84fa0
RD
261Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
262will now Disconnect the event.
263
264Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
265
7dbce44a
RD
266Added wxFileHistory.
267
71f1334b 268Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 269by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 270this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
271same document.
272
611dc22c
RD
273Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
274
78e8819c
RD
275Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
276Feuer.
277
278Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
279were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
280additional columns for each item. The classes are
281wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
282wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
283also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 284
4a61305d
RD
285Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
286from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
287wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
288visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
289SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
290wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
291details.

fea018f8
RD
294
295
286e2db6 2962.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
297-----
298Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
299code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
300on a custom event handler for example.)
301
d56cebe7
RD
302Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
303GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
304
305Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
306subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
307
308Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
309
310Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
311
286e2db6
RD
312Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
313
314Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
315
bf7945ce 316
9416aa89
RD
317
3182.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
319-----
320Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 321glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
322
323Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
324wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
325ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
326
327Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
328
1af9e5c5 329Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
330wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
331colour database.
332
6e18ca6c
RD
333Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
334wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
335access from non-GUI threads.
336
1af9e5c5
RD
337wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
338use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 339
6bb38ab6
RD
340Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
341
6bb38ab6
RD
342Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
343that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
344
49875c53
RD
345Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
346wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
347
e0672e2f
RD
348Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
349it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 350
1af9e5c5
RD
351Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
352convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
353converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
354containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
355included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
356specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
357compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
358convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
359wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
360the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
361
362Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
363experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
364many refreshes.
365
d1679124
RD
366A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
367the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 368
d7ec6564 369Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 370
d7ec6564 371Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 372
3b36695d
RD
373Added wxToggleButton.
374
375Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 376
9416aa89
RD
377Added some methods to wxGrid:
378 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
379 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
380 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
381 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
382 GetGridWindow
383 GetGridRowLabelWindow
384 GetGridColLabelWindow
385 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
386
387Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
388representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
389On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
390
391
392***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
393 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
394 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
395 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
396 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
397 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
398 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
399 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
400 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
401 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
402 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
403 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
404 use weak references.)
405
406 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
407 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
408 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
409 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
410 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
411 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
412 object-type related oddities to me.
413***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
414
415There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
416in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
417specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
418finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
419
420Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
421list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 422
10e07c70 423Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 424
493f1553
RD
425Added wxWave.
426
30aaddfe
RD
427Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
428useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
429make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
430Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
431of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
432please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
433
25832b3f
RD
434Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
435by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
436wxPython/samples.

452New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
453that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
454a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
455it to a wxString using the default encoding.
456
457Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
458
459Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
460
461Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 462a matching prefix as keys are typed.

463
464Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
465column in report mode.
466
467Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
468bar after 2 seconds.
469
470Added wxJoystick.
471
472Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
473a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
474object, (usually a window.)

485wxPython/src/export.h
486
487Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate

489utils. Will probably add more later.

491Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
492wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
493wxPrinterDC2 name.
494
495Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
496that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
497
498Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
499
500Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
501mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
502
503Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
504integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
505XML-RPC server.

509New in 2.2.2
510------------
511
512Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
513Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
514from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
515that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
516releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
517have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
518interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
519some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
520how things work.
521
522I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
523of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
524This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
525builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
526use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
527platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
528wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
529install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
530using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
531
532Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
533contributed by Joerg Baumann.
534
535Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
536get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
537get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
538stdin.
539
540Removed the old python sizers.
541
542Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
543and wxRealPoint.
544
545Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
546the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
547libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
548
549Lots of little fixes here and there.
550
551Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
552wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
553wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

597WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
598Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
599handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
600confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
601coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
602generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
603the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

639Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
640available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
641new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
642consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
643good...)
644
645Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
646authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
647mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
648
649Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
650It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
651in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
652on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
653needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
654just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
655method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
656matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
657them.
658
659Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
660expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
661defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
662"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
663
664I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
665wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
666wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
667but I've included a very readable source file in the
668wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
669can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
670http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
671until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool

716The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
717wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
718but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
719support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
720methods look like this:
721
722 def AddTool(ID,
723 bitmap,
724 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
725 toggle = FALSE,
726 clientData = NULL,
727 shortHelpString = "",

729
730 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
731 bitmap,
732 shortHelpString = "",
733 longHelpString = "",
734 toggle=FALSE)
735
736
737There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
738that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.

762What's new in 2.1.11
763--------------------
764Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
765syncronized.
766
767wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
768wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
769itself.
770
771Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
772being added. This should remove the need for our
773wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
774
775wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
776no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
777probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
778a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
779an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
780
781Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
782
783Added new HTML printing classes.
784
785Added wxWindow.GetHandle
786
787Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
788it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
789(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
790wxPoint.)
791
792Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
793processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
794thread from other threads.
795
796Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
797
798Added wxFontEnumerator.
799
800Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
801
802wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
803Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
804
805Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
806

819major features.
820
821
822
823What's new in 2.1.4
824--------------------
825
826This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
827wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
828binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
829wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
830To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
831the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
832
833Now back to what's new...
834
835Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
836
837Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
838
839Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
840of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
841anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
842list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
843memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
844great!
845
846Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
847SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
848default sort order.
849
850Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
851either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
852example, the following are equivallent:
853
854 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
855 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
856
857Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
858handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
859is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
860understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
861pages. See the demo for an example.
862
863A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
864wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
865
866Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
867
868Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
869versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
870warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
871disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
872the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
873added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
874smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
875that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
876not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
877wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
878portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
879further details.
880
881Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
882wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
883accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
884directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
885that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
886Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
887for more info and examples in future releases.
888
889Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
890from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
891wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
892all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
893different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
894columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
895to use them.
896
897Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
898that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
899the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
900method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
901in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
902of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
903in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
904there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
905enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
906be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
907pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
908
909I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
910years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
911object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
912value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
913sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
914them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
915default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
916creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
917to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
918back again the next time something is written. (You can call
919app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
920redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
921object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
922class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
923RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
924wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
925
926 class MyApp(wxApp):
927 outputWindowClass = MyClass
928
929 def OnInit(self):
930 frame = MyFrame()
931 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
932 return true
933
934Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
935wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
936your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
937to really screw things up.
938
939Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
940in the wxWindows docs...
941
942Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
943shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
944shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
945that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
946frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
947bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
948a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
949problems...)
950
951
952
953
954What's new in 2.1b3
955--------------------
956
957This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
958
959Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
960for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
961patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
962old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
963features:
964
965 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
966 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
967 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
968
969 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
970
971 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
972 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
973 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
974 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
975
976
977There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
978raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
979Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
980see distrib/build.py for more details.
981
982wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
983two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
984takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
985interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.

991What's new in 2.1b2
992--------------------
993
994Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
995
996Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
997provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
998their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
999It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1000line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1001
1002It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1003process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1004prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1005is being unloaded by Python.
1006
1007I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1008make wxPython look bad.
1009
1010wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1011wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1012
1013Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1014
1015You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1016wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1017
1018Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1019code to show how to use it.
1020
1021Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1022matches MSW's.
1023
1024Added wxGrid.GetCells
1025
1026Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1027wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1028
1029Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1030wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1031
1032Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1033 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1034
1035Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1036objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1037a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1038
1039Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1040data transfer.
1041
1042Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1043
1044New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1045for unix systems.
1046
1047Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1048
1049SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1050in wx.cpp.
1051
1052
1053
1054
1055
1056What's new in 2.1b1
1057--------------------
1058Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1059item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1060wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1061
1062Added the Printing Framework.
1063
1064Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1065version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1066data after loading each extension module.
1067
1068Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1069wxWindows classes.
1070
1071Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1072symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1073when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1074
1075wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1076of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1077types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1078not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1079
1080
1081
1082What's new in 2.0b9
1083-------------------
1084Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1085
1086Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1087wxPython application.
1088
1089Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1090
1091Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1092associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1093this feature off.
1094
1095Added wxSafeYield function.
1096
1097OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1098
1099Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1100how it all works.
1101
1102The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1103DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1104
1105Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1106
1107Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1108wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1109
1110Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1111
1112Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1113methods.
1114
1115
1116
1117What's new in 2.0b8
1118-------------------
1119Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1120
1121Several missing methods from various classes.
1122
1123Various bug fixes.
1124
1125
1126
1127What's new in 2.0b7
1128-------------------
1129Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1130
1131Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1132
1133
1134
1135What's new in 2.0b6
1136-------------------
1137Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1138Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1139
1140
1141What's new in 2.0b5
1142-------------------
1143Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1144reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1145wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1146wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1147with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1148
1149I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1150in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1151have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1152diverges from wxWindows.
1153
1154Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1155window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1156it should just work... More news on this later.
1157
1158Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1159
1160Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1161wxRegConfig class.
1162
1163As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1164
1165
1166
1167What's new in 0.5.3
1168-------------------
1169Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1170
1171Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1172compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1173
1174
1175
1176What's new in 0.5.0
1177-------------------
1178Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1179wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1180namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1181prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1182
1183Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1184
1185Made the events work for wxGrid.
1186
1187Added wxConfig.
1188
1189Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1190
1191Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1192objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1193
1194Other assorted fixes and additions.
1195
1196
1197
1198
1199What's new in 0.4.2
1200-------------------
1201
1202wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1203static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1204<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1205down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1206DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1207because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1208
1209The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1210must have been a different issue all along...
1211
1212
1213
1214What's New in 0.4
1215-----------------
1216
12171. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1218Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1219linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1220extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1221And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1222version segfault shortly after starting up.
1223
12242. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1225
12263. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1227
1228----------------------------------------------------------------------
