RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35

RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
b0e5c039
RD
96Added wxPyWindow and wxPyControl which are just like their wx
97counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
117
118 If there are other methods that should be supported please let me
119 know.
120
121Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
122DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
123
b5a5d647 124
3bd1e033 125
b8510c2f 126
4268f798 1272.3.2.1
71f1334b 128-------
4268f798
RD
129Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
130well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
131without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
132
133Added some patches from library contributors.
134
135
136
ebf4302c 1372.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
138-----
139Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
140EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
141wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
142and a demo to show them in action.
143
fea018f8
RD
144Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
145http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 146
c7e7022c 147Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 148
00b6c4e3 149Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 150
09f3d4e6
RD
151Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
152Rolinsky.
153
154Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 155default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
156coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
157creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
158as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
159passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
160resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
161the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
162etc.
163
fe0aca37 164Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
165accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
166from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
167means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
168are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
169wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 170
6d19860f
RD
171Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
172column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
173using wxColumnSorterMixin.
174
53fe40ba 175Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 176
6d8b4f8d 177Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 178
431f4c16 179Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 180
19a97bd6
RD
181Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
182are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
183multi-processor machine.
184
76bfdc78
RD
185Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
186messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
187
0122b7e3
RD
188Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
189
71f1334b
RD
190The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
191wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
192that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
193created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
194exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
195original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 196
9d37f964
RD
197Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
198DrawPointList.
199
79f1bf32
RD
200Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
201
729f4276
RD
202Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
203text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 204
71f1334b 205Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
206and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
207of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
208browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
209if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
210wx-dev list.
211
212Added wxStopWatch.
213
214Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
215
c0c84fa0
RD
216Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
217will now Disconnect the event.
218
219Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
220
7dbce44a
RD
221Added wxFileHistory.
222
71f1334b 223Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 224by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 225this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
226same document.
227
611dc22c
RD
228Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
229
78e8819c
RD
230Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
231Feuer.
232
233Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
234were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
235additional columns for each item. The classes are
236wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
237wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
238also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 239
4a61305d
RD
240Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
241from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
242wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
243visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
244SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
245wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
246details.
247
b37c7e1d 248
fea018f8
RD
249
250
286e2db6 2512.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
252-----
253Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
254code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
255on a custom event handler for example.)
256
d56cebe7
RD
257Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
258GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
259
260Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
261subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
262
263Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
264
265Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
266
286e2db6
RD
267Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
268
269Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
270
bf7945ce 271
9416aa89
RD
272
2732.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
274-----
275Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 276glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
277
278Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
279wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
280ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
281
282Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
283
1af9e5c5 284Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
285wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
286colour database.
287
6e18ca6c
RD
288Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
289wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
290access from non-GUI threads.
291
1af9e5c5
RD
292wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
293use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 294
6bb38ab6
RD
295Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
296
6bb38ab6
RD
297Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
298that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
299
49875c53
RD
300Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
301wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
302
e0672e2f
RD
303Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
304it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 305
1af9e5c5
RD
306Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
307convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
308converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
309containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
310included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
311specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
312compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
313convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
314wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
315the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
316
317Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
318experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
319many refreshes.
320
d1679124
RD
321A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
322the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 323
d7ec6564 324Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 325
d7ec6564 326Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 327
3b36695d
RD
328Added wxToggleButton.
329
330Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 331
9416aa89
RD
332Added some methods to wxGrid:
333 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
334 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
335 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
336 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
337 GetGridWindow
338 GetGridRowLabelWindow
339 GetGridColLabelWindow
340 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
341
342Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
343representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
344On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
345
346
347***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
348 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
349 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
350 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
351 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
352 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
353 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
354 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
355 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
356 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
357 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
358 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
359 use weak references.)
360
361 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
362 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
363 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
364 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
365 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
366 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
367 object-type related oddities to me.
368***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
369
370There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
371in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
372specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
373finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
374
375Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
376list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 377
10e07c70 378Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 379
493f1553
RD
380Added wxWave.
381
30aaddfe
RD
382Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
383useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
384make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
385Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
386of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
387please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
388
25832b3f
RD
389Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
390by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
391wxPython/samples.
392
493f1553 393
19cf4f80
RD
394
395
b075a3bb
RD
3962.2.6
397-----
398
399No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
400changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
401
1b62f00d 402
19cf4f80 403
1b62f00d 4042.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
405-----
406
407New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
408that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
409a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
410it to a wxString using the default encoding.
411
412Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
413
414Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
415
416Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 417a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
418
419Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
420column in report mode.
421
422Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
423bar after 2 seconds.
424
425Added wxJoystick.
426
427Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
428a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
429object, (usually a window.)
430
431Added wxNotifyEvent.Allow()
432
de20db99
RD
433Fixed GOBS of reference leaks.
434
1e7ecb7b
RD
435Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into
436multiple extension modules again. A Python CObject is used to allow
1b62f00d
RD
437the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
438the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b
RD
439libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
440wxPython/src/export.h
441
442Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
443extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
444utils. Will probably add more later.
445
1b62f00d
RD
446Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
447wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
448wxPrinterDC2 name.
449
450Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
451that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
452
453Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
454
455Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
456mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
457
458Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
459integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
460XML-RPC server.
461

RD
462
463
c368d904
RD
464New in 2.2.2
465------------
466
467Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
468Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
469from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
470that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
471releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
472have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
473interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
474some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
475how things work.
476
477I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
478of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
479This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
480builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
481use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
482platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
483wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
484install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
485using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
486
487Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
488contributed by Joerg Baumann.
489
490Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
491get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
492get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
493stdin.
494
495Removed the old python sizers.
496
497Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
498and wxRealPoint.
499
500Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
501the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
502libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
503
504Lots of little fixes here and there.
505
506Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
507wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
508wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

552WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
553Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
554handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
555confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
556coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
557generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
558the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

594Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
595available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
596new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
597consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
598good...)
599
600Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
601authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
602mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
603
604Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
605It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
606in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
607on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
608needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
609just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
610method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
611matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
612them.
613
614Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
615expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
616defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
617"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
618
619I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
620wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
621wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
622but I've included a very readable source file in the
623wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
624can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
625http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
626until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
627provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

671The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
672wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
673but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
674support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
675methods look like this:
676
677 def AddTool(ID,
678 bitmap,
679 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
680 toggle = FALSE,
681 clientData = NULL,
682 shortHelpString = "",

685 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
686 bitmap,
687 shortHelpString = "",
688 longHelpString = "",
689 toggle=FALSE)
690
691
692There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
693that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.

717What's new in 2.1.11
718--------------------
719Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
720syncronized.
721
722wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
723wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
724itself.
725
726Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
727being added. This should remove the need for our
728wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
729
730wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
731no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
732probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
733a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
734an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
735
736Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
737
738Added new HTML printing classes.
739
740Added wxWindow.GetHandle
741
742Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
743it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
744(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
745wxPoint.)
746
747Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
748processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
749thread from other threads.
750
751Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
752
753Added wxFontEnumerator.
754
755Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.

761

770What's new in 2.1.5
771-------------------

773crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
774major features.
775
776
777
778What's new in 2.1.4
779--------------------
780
781This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
782wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
783binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
784wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
785To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
786the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
787
788Now back to what's new...
789
790Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
791
792Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
793
794Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
795of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
796anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
797list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
798memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
799great!
800
801Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
802SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
803default sort order.
804
805Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
806either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
807example, the following are equivallent:
808
809 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
810 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
811
812Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
813handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
814is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
815understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
816pages. See the demo for an example.
817
818A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
819wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
820
821Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
822
823Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
824versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
825warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
826disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
827the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
828added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
829smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
830that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
831not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
832wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
833portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
834further details.
835
836Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
837wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
838accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
839directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
840that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
841Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
842for more info and examples in future releases.
843
844Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
845from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
846wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
847all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
848different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
849columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
850to use them.
851
852Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
853that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
854the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
855method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
856in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
857of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
858in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
859there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
860enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
861be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
862pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
863
864I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
865years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
866object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
867value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
868sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
869them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
870default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
871creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
872to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
873back again the next time something is written. (You can call
874app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
875redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
876object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
877class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
878RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
879wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
880
881 class MyApp(wxApp):
882 outputWindowClass = MyClass
883
884 def OnInit(self):
885 frame = MyFrame()
886 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
887 return true
888
889Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
890wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
891your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
892to really screw things up.
893
894Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
895in the wxWindows docs...
896
897Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
898shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
899shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
900that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
901frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
902bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
903a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
904problems...)
905
906
907
908
909What's new in 2.1b3
910--------------------
911
912This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
913
914Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
915for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
916patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
917old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
918features:
919
920 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
921 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
922 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
923
924 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
925
926 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
927 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
928 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
929 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
930
931
932There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
933raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
934Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
935see distrib/build.py for more details.
936
937wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
938two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
939takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
940interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
941
942
943
944
945
946What's new in 2.1b2
947--------------------
948
949Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
950
951Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
952provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
953their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
954It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
955line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
956
957It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
958process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
959prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
960is being unloaded by Python.
961
962I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
963make wxPython look bad.
964
965wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
966wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
967
968Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
969
970You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
971wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
972
973Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
974code to show how to use it.
975
976Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
977matches MSW's.
978
979Added wxGrid.GetCells
980
981Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
982wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
983
984Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
985wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
986
987Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
988 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
989
990Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
991objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
992a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
993
994Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
995data transfer.
996
997Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
998
999New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1000for unix systems.
1001
1002Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1003
1004SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1005in wx.cpp.

1013Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1014item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1015wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1016
1017Added the Printing Framework.
1018
1019Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1020version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1021data after loading each extension module.
1022
1023Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1024wxWindows classes.
1025
1026Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1027symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1028when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1029
1030wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1031of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1032types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1033not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1034
1035
1036
1037What's new in 2.0b9
1038-------------------
1039Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1040
1041Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1042wxPython application.
1043
1044Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1045
1046Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1047associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1048this feature off.
1049
1050Added wxSafeYield function.
1051
1052OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1053
1054Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1055how it all works.
1056
1057The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1058DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1059
1060Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1061
1062Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1063wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1064
1065Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1066
1067Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1068methods.
1069
1070
1071
1072What's new in 2.0b8

1075
1076Several missing methods from various classes.
1077
1078Various bug fixes.
1079
1080

1085
1086Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1087
1088
1089
1090What's new in 2.0b6
1091-------------------
1092Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1093Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1094
1095
1096What's new in 2.0b5
1097-------------------
1098Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1099reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1100wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1101wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1102with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1103
1104I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1105in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1106have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1107diverges from wxWindows.
1108
1109Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1110window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1111it should just work... More news on this later.
1112
1113Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1114
1115Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1116wxRegConfig class.
1117
1118As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1119
1120
1121
1122What's new in 0.5.3
1123-------------------
1124Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1125
1126Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1127compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1128
1129
1130
1131What's new in 0.5.0
1132-------------------
1133Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1134wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1135namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1136prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1137
1138Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1139
1140Made the events work for wxGrid.
1141
1142Added wxConfig.
1143
1144Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1145
1146Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1147objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1148
1149Other assorted fixes and additions.
1150
1151
1152
1153
1154What's new in 0.4.2
1155-------------------
1156
1157wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1158static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1159<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1160down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1161DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1162because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1163
1164The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1165must have been a different issue all along...
1166
1167
1168
1169What's New in 0.4
1170-----------------
1171
11721. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1173Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1174linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1175extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1176And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1177version segfault shortly after starting up.
1178
11792. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1180
11813. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1182
1183----------------------------------------------------------------------
