5?????
6-------
7
8Added wxScrolledPanel from Wil Sadkin
9
10
11
122.4.0.7
13-------
14Gave up on generating a warning upon the use of the old true/false or
15TRUE/FALSE values.
16
17Fixed wxGenericTreeCtrl (used on wxGTK and wxMac for wxTreeCtrl) so
18that it can successfully handle lots of nodes instead of overflowing
19when the virtual height of the widget overflowed a 16-bit value.
20
21Fixed the typemap that converts strings to wxColours to also accept
22unicode.
23
24Fixed problem where the wrong class name could sometimes be used for
25OOR.
26
27Fixed an interpreter lock problem in the __eq__ and __ne__ methods in
28wxSize and etc.
29
30Updated PyCrust to version 0.9
31
32Instead of always logging C++ assertions, added wxPYAPP_ASSERT_LOG
33flag to turn it on. In most cases turning it into an exception (the
34default behavior) is enough. See below in the 2.3.4.1 notes for more
35details.
36
37
38
39
402.4.0.6 (a.k.a. the I'm so stupid release)
41-------
42The new deprecation class for the old true/false symbols can now be
43returned from OnInit. And I promise to be sure I am testing what I
44think I am testing in the future...
45
46
47
482.4.0.5 (a.k.a. the blame it on Kevin release)
49-------
50A few little but annoying bug fixes.
51
52Updated pycolourchooser.
53
54Updated to 0.9b of PyCrust.
55
56
57
582.4.0.4
59-------
60Added missing wxRect methods
61
62Add OOR support for wxApp objects too.
63
64Added wxCursorFromImage, which works on wxMSW and wxGTK so far.
65
66All platforms now send EVT_DESTROY_WINDOW. Be warned that at the time
67the event is sent the window is in the process of being deconstructed,
68and so calling some (most?) methods of the window itself may cause
69problems.
70
71Fixed SF Bug #689481, a method in the OGL wrappers was using the wrong
72return type.
73
74Fixed SF Bug #689958, an endless loop in printout.py.
75
76Added EVT_WINDOW_CREATE_ID and EVT_WINDOW_DESTROY_ID so these events
77can be associated with a specific window ID and more easily caught by
78the parent window.
79
80Fixed copy-paste error in wxListCtrl.GetFirstSelected.
81
82Added missing Init method (and an overloading wrapper) to wxLocale
83wrapper.
84
85Added a wxBitmap.SetMaskColour convenience method.
86
87Changed how the dynamic event tables (used for all Python wx classes,
88C++ wx classes typically use static event tables) are searched such
89that they behave from a Python perspective more like the static tables
90in C++. Namely that if there are identical event bindings in a base
91Python class and a derived Python class that the one in the derived
92class will be found first and that if Skip is called that the one in
93the base class will still be found instead of skipping directly to the
94static stable in the C++ class.
95
96Switched to using True/False in the wxPython lib and demo instead of
97true/false or TRUE/FALSE to prepare for the new boolean type and
98constants being added to Python. Added code to wx.py to test for the
99existence of the new constants and to create suitable values if not
100present.
101
102Added some static wxApp functions that help with integration with the
103Mac UI. They are no-ops on other platforms so it doesn't hurt to
104always call them. The functions are:
105
106 wxApp_GetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
107 wxApp_GetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
108 wxApp_GetMacAboutMenuItemId
109 wxApp_GetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
110 wxApp_GetMacExitMenuItemId
111 wxApp_GetMacHelpMenuTitleName
112 wxApp_SetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
113 wxApp_SetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
114 wxApp_SetMacAboutMenuItemId
115 wxApp_SetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
116 wxApp_SetMacExitMenuItemId
117 wxApp_SetMacHelpMenuTitleName
118
119Refactored, enhanced and added capabilities for the DrawXXXList
120functions, inspired by code from Chris Barker.
121
122The wxWindows .mo language catalog files are now installed in a
123subdirectory of the wxPython package dir on MSW since that platform
124doesn't have a standard place for them.
125
126Added missing deselect methods for wxGrid.
127
128Fixed typemaps for wxGridCellCoordsArray.
129
130Updated to the 0.9a version of PyCrust
131
132
133
1342.4.0.2
135-------
136Several bug fixes.
137
138Added wxIntCtrl from Will Sadkin.
139
140Added wxPyColourChooser by Michael Gilfix.
141
142
143
144
1452.4.0.1
146-------
147No major new features since 2.3.4.2, mostly bug fixes and minor
148enhancements.
149
150Added function wrappers for the common dialogs from Kevin Altis. See
151wxPython/lib/dialogs.py for more details.
152
153
154
1552.3.4.2
156-------
157Various bug fixes.
158
159
160
1612.3.4.1
162-------
163Updated XRCed and wxTimeCtrl contribs.
164
165Show a couple new wxGrid features in the demo.
166
167Several bug fixes in wxWindows.
168
169Added wxHtmlFilter.
170
171wxASSERT and related C++ runtime diagnostics are now converted to
172Python exceptions. When an assert happens a wxPyAssertionError
173(which derives from AssertionError) exception is created and when
174control returns back to the Python code that invoked the C++ API it
175will be raised. The same exception restrictions are in place as
176before, namely that exceptions can't cross from one Python layer
177through C++ to another Python layer. That simply means that if you
178want to catch wxPyAssertionError or any other exception that you need
179to do it before control returns to C++ at the end of your event
180handler or callback code. There is some test code in demo/wxButton.py
181you can use to play with this new feature.
182
183Added some methods to wxApp (SetAssertMode and GetAssertMode) that let
184you control how C++ assertions are processed. Valid modes are:
185wxPYAPP_ASSERT_SUPPRESS, wxPYAPP_ASSERT_EXCEPTION, and
186wxPYAPP_ASSERT_DIALOG. Using _SUPPRESS will give you behavior like
187the old "final" builds and the assert will be ignored, _EXCEPTION is
188the new default described above, and _DIALOG is like the default in
1892.3.3.1 and prior "hybrid" builds. You can also combine _EXCEPTION
190and _DIALOG if you wish, although I don't know why you would.
191
192You can now overload OnInitGui, OnExit and OnAssert in your classes
193derived from wxApp.
194
195Added GetSelectedCells, GetSelectionBlockTopLeft,
196GetSelectionBlockBottomRight, GetSelectedRows, GetSelectedCols nethods
197to wxGrid.
198
199Added Python == and != operators for some basic classes
200
201Fixed the Python wrappers for wxInputStream so they no longer block
202when reading from a wxProcess on wxGTK. They now work more or less as
203they did before 2.3.3.1 but the dual meaning of eof() has been
204removed. There is now a CanRead() method that lets you know if there
205is data waiting to be read from the pipe.
206
207Fixed method name clash in wxIEHtmlWin, renamed Refresh to RefreshPage.
208
209Added Throbber from Cliff Wells to the library and the demo.
210
211Windows installer prompts to uninstall old version first.
212
213Added wxPython.lib.evtmgr by Robb Shecter, which is an easier, more
214"Pythonic" and more OO method of registering handlers for wxWindows
215events using the Publish/Subscribe pattern.
216
217Added wxPython.lib.popupctl by Gerrit van Dyk which is a combobox-like
218gizmo for poping up arbitrary controls. It is currently using
219wxDialog because of some issues with wxPopupWindow...
220
221Added wxPython.lib.gridmovers by Gerrit van Dyk which facilitates the
222dragging of columns and/or rows in a wxGrid.
223
224Added wxPython.lib.multisash by Gerrit van Dyk which is a nice
225implementation of allowing the user to split a window any number of
226times either horizontally or vertically, and to close the split off
227windows when desired.
228
229Added helpviewer tool that displays HTML books similarly to how MS
230HTMLHelp viewer does. Changed how the wxPythonDocs tarball is built
231and added a script to launch the doc viewer.
232
233
234
235
2362.3.3.1
237-------
b5a5d647
RD
238Added wxSplashScreen.
239
68320e40
RD
240Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
241
ce914f73 242Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 243
769a9cb2 244The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
bffe56c5
RD
245wxPopupWindow if available on the platform (and functioning correctly)
246so they can extend beyond the client area of the STC if needed.
769a9cb2 247
f74ff5ef
RD
248Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
249added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
250be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
251
afb810d9
RD
252Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
253data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
254convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 255
68bc8549
RD
256Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
257This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
258row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
259spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
260Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
261wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 262
18fc9fa3
RD
263Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
264
e9159fe8
RD
265Added wxBufferedDC.
266
a834585d 267Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45, and then again
f114b858 268to version 1.47, and one more time to 1.48! <wink>
1a2fb4cd 269
b96c7a38 270UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
271 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
272 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
273 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 274 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
275 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
276 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
277 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
278
279 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
280 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
281 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
282 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
283 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
284 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
285 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
286 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
287 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
288 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
289 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
290
291 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
292 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
293 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
294 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
295 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
296 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
297 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
298 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
299 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
300 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
301 method.
302
726fc00a 303Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 304
0e9b78ce
RD
305Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
306
68bc8549
RD
307Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
308
c8b34a16
RD
309A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
310whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
311to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
312crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
313pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
314Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
315a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
316for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 317
33ff77f6
RD
318Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
319wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 320derived classes.
33ff77f6 321
d55d6b3f
RD
322Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
323the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 324
94e36a51
RD
325Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
326application.
b5a5d647 327
3b867149
RD
328Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
329wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
330methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
331supported are:
332
333 DoMoveWindow
334 DoSetSize
335 DoSetClientSize
336 DoSetVirtualSize
337 DoGetSize
338 DoGetClientSize
339 DoGetPosition
340 DoGetVirtualSize
341 DoGetBestSize
342 InitDialog
343 TransferDataFromWindow
344 TransferDataToWindow
345 Validate
346 AcceptsFocus
347 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
348 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
349 AddChild
350 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 351
3b867149
RD
352 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
353 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
354
355Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
356DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
357
a66212dc
RD
358Added wxArtProvider.
359
360Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
361(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
362are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
363something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
364implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
365
366Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
367
f9b24f07
RD
368Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
369creating a ScrolledPanel.
370
3eb221f6
RD
371Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
372other menu stuff.
c731eb47 373
3eb221f6
RD
374Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
375ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 376C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 377so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 378
763d71e4
RD
379Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
380modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
381transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
382tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 383win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
763d71e4 384
5fea3204
RD
385Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
386so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
387respond to mouse events and etc.
388
d6a3401d
RD
389Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
390on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
391
f6f98ecc 392Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c 393import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
a6151d99
RD
394tools in your own scripts or apps as needed. On Linux and OS X the
395tool scripts are installed to {prefix}/bin so you should be able to
396easily launch them from the command line. For example, PyCrust can be
397started with just the "pycrust" command.
bd4b9c8c 398
3b867149
RD
399Added a sample to the demo that catches various key events and
400displays the details of the event.
401
af83019e
RD
402Added wxWizard, wxWizardPage, wxWizardPageSimple and wxPyWizardPage.
403
628c7f79
RD
404Added wxXmlResourceHandler which allows you to create custom handlers
405for nonstandard class types in XRC resources. See the demo for an
406example.
407
1e4a197e
RD
408Added wxPython.lib.mixins.rubberband module from Robb Shecter.
409
410Added wxTimeCtrl from Will Sadkin.
763d71e4 411
3bd1e033 412
b8510c2f 413
4268f798 4142.3.2.1
71f1334b 415-------
4268f798
RD
416Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
417well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
418without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
419
420Added some patches from library contributors.
421
422
423
ebf4302c 4242.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
425-----
426Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
427EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
428wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
429and a demo to show them in action.
430
fea018f8
RD
431Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
432http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 433
c7e7022c 434Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 435
00b6c4e3 436Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 437
09f3d4e6
RD
438Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
439Rolinsky.
440
441Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
1e4a197e
RD
442default C++ constructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
443corresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
09f3d4e6
RD
444creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
445as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
446passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
447resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
448the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
449etc.
450
fe0aca37 451Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
452accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
453from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
454means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
455are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
456wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 457
6d19860f
RD
458Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
459column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
460using wxColumnSorterMixin.
461
53fe40ba 462Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 463
6d8b4f8d 464Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 465
431f4c16 466Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 467
19a97bd6
RD
468Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
469are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
470multi-processor machine.
471
76bfdc78
RD
472Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
473messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
474
0122b7e3
RD
475Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
476
71f1334b
RD
477The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
478wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
479that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
480created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
481exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
482original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 483
9d37f964
RD
484Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
485DrawPointList.
486
79f1bf32
RD
487Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
488
729f4276
RD
489Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
490text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 491
71f1334b 492Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
493and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
494of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
495browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
496if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
497wx-dev list.
498
499Added wxStopWatch.
500
501Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
502
c0c84fa0
RD
503Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
504will now Disconnect the event.
505
506Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
507
7dbce44a

522additional columns for each item. The classes are
523wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,

529wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
530visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
531SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See

595converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
596containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
597included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
598specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
599compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
600convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See

634***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
635 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
636 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
637 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
638 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
639 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
640 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
641 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
642 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
643 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
644 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
645 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
646 use weak references.)
647
648 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
649 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
650 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
651 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
652 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
653 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
654 object-type related oddities to me.
655***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
656
657There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
658in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython

660finally got done.
9416aa89
RD

722Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into

725the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared

727wxPython/src/export.h
728
729Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate

1b62f00d
RD
733Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a

738that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
739

741
742Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the

751New in 2.2.2
752------------
753
754Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
755Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
756from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
757that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
758releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
759have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
760interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
761some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
762how things work.
763
764I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
765of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
766This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
767builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
768use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
769platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
770wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
771install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
772using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
773
774Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
775contributed by Joerg Baumann.
776
777Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
778get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
779get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
780stdin.
781
782Removed the old python sizers.
783
784Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
785and wxRealPoint.
786
787Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
788the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
789libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
790
791Lots of little fixes here and there.
792
793Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
794wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on

839WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
840Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
841handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
842confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
843coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
844generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
845the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
846modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.

881Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
882available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
883new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
884consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
885good...)
886
887Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
888authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
889mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
890
891Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
892It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
893in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
894on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
895needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
896just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
897method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
898matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
899them.
900
901Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
902expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
903defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
904"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
905
906I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
907wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
908wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
909but I've included a very readable source file in the
910wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
911can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
912http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps

958The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython

960but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
961support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
962methods look like this:
963
964 def AddTool(ID,
965 bitmap,
966 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
967 toggle = FALSE,
968 clientData = NULL,
969 shortHelpString = "",

971
972 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
973 bitmap,
974 shortHelpString = "",
975 longHelpString = "",

977
978
1e4a197e 979There are also corresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
9b3d3bc4
RD

1013Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
1014being added. This should remove the need for our
1015wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
1016
1017wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
1018no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
1019probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
1020a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
1021an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
1022
1023Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
1024
1025Added new HTML printing classes.
1026
1027Added wxWindow.GetHandle
1028
1029Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
1030it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
1031(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
1032wxPoint.)
1033
1034Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
1035processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
1036thread from other threads.
1037
1038Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
1039
1040Added wxFontEnumerator.
1041
1042Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
1043
1044wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
1045Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
1046
1047Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
1048
1049Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on
1050wxGTK...
1051
1052Added an MVC tree control from Bryn Keller to the library.
1053

1056
1057What's new in 2.1.5
1058-------------------
1059This is a quick bug-fix release to take care of a few nasties that
1060crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
1061major features.
1062
1063
1064
1065What's new in 2.1.4
1066--------------------
1067
1068This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
1069wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
1070binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
1071wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
1072To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
1073the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
1074
1075Now back to what's new...
1076
1077Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
1078
1079Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
1080
1081Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
1082of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
1083anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
1084list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
1085memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
1086great!
1087
1088Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
1089SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
1090default sort order.
1091
1092Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
1093either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
1094example, the following are equivallent:
1095
1096 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
1097 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
1098
1099Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
1100handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
1101is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
1102understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
1103pages. See the demo for an example.
1104
1105A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
1106wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
1107
1108Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
1109
1110Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
1111versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
1112warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
1113disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
1114the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
1115added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
1116smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
1117that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
1118not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
1119wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
1120portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
1121further details.
1122
1123Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
1124wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
1125accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
1126directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
1127that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
1128Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
1129for more info and examples in future releases.
1130
1131Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
1132from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
1133wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
1134all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
1135different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
1136columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
1137to use them.
1138
1139Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
1140that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
1141the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
1142method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
1143in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
1144of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
1145in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
1146there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
1147enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
1148be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
1149pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
1150
1151I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
1152years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
1153object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
1154value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
1155sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
1156them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
1157default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
1158creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
1159to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
1160back again the next time something is written. (You can call
1161app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
1162redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
1163object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
1164class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
1165RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
1166wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
1167
1168 class MyApp(wxApp):
1169 outputWindowClass = MyClass
1170
1171 def OnInit(self):
1172 frame = MyFrame()
1173 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
1174 return true
1175
1176Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
1177wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
1178your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
1179to really screw things up.
1180
1181Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
1182in the wxWindows docs...
1183
1184Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
1185shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
1186shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
1187that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
1188frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
1189bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
1190a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
1191problems...)
1192
1193
1194
1195
1196What's new in 2.1b3
1197--------------------
1198
1199This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
1200
1201Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
1202for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
1203patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
1204old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
1205features:
1206
1207 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
1208 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
1209 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
1210
1211 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
1212
1213 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
1214 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
1215 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
1216 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
1217
1218
1219There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
1220raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
1221Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
1222see distrib/build.py for more details.
1223
1224wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
1225two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
1226takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
1227interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
1228
1229
1230
1231
1232
1233What's new in 2.1b2
1234--------------------
1235
1236Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
1237
1238Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
1239provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
1240their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
1241It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1242line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1243
1244It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1245process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1246prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1247is being unloaded by Python.
1248
1249I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1250make wxPython look bad.
1251
1252wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1253wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1254
1255Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1256
1257You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1258wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1259
1260Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1261code to show how to use it.
1262
1263Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1264matches MSW's.
1265
1266Added wxGrid.GetCells
1267
1268Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1269wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1270
1271Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1272wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1273
1274Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1275 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1276
1277Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1278objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1279a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1280
1281Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1282data transfer.
1283
1284Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1285
1286New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1287for unix systems.
1288
1289Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1290
1291SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1292in wx.cpp.
1293
1294
1295
1296
1297
1298What's new in 2.1b1
1299--------------------
1300Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1301item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1302wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1303
1304Added the Printing Framework.
1305
1306Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1307version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1308data after loading each extension module.
1309
1310Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1311wxWindows classes.
1312
1313Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1314symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1315when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1316
1317wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1318of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1319types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1320not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1321
1322
1323
1324What's new in 2.0b9
1325-------------------
1326Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1327
1328Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1329wxPython application.
1330
1331Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1332
1333Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1334associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1335this feature off.
1336
1337Added wxSafeYield function.
1338
1339OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1340
1341Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1342how it all works.
1343
1344The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1345DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1346
1347Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1348
1349Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1350wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1351
1352Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1353
1354Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1355methods.
1356
1357
1358
1359What's new in 2.0b8
1360-------------------
1361Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1362
1363Several missing methods from various classes.
1364
1365Various bug fixes.
1366
1367
1368
1369What's new in 2.0b7
1370-------------------
1371Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1372
1373Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1374
1375
1376
1377What's new in 2.0b6
1378-------------------
1379Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1380Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1381
1382
1383What's new in 2.0b5
1384-------------------
1385Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1386reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1387wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1388wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1389with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1390
1391I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1392in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1393have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1394diverges from wxWindows.
1395
1396Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1397window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1398it should just work... More news on this later.
1399
1400Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1401
1402Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1403wxRegConfig class.
1404
1405As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1406
1407
1408
1409What's new in 0.5.3
1410-------------------
1411Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1412
1413Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1414compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1415
1416
1417
1418What's new in 0.5.0
1419-------------------
1420Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1421wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1422namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1423prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1424
1425Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1426
1427Made the events work for wxGrid.
1428
1429Added wxConfig.
1430
1431Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1432
1433Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1434objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1435
1436Other assorted fixes and additions.
1437
1438
1439
1440
1441What's new in 0.4.2
1442-------------------
1443
1444wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1445static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1446<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1447down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1448DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1449because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1450
1451The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1452must have been a different issue all along...
1453
1454
1455
1456What's New in 0.4
1457-----------------
1458
14591. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1460Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1461linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1462extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1463And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1464version segfault shortly after starting up.
1465
14662. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1467
14683. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1469
1470----------------------------------------------------------------------
