52.5.0.x
6-------
7
8Many, many little fixes, changes and additions done as part of the move
9to wxWindows 2.5 that I have forgotten about.
10
11Changed the import-startup-bootstrap process employed by wxPython such
12that wxWindows and the underlying gui toolkit are not initialized
13until the wxApp object is created (but before wxApp.OnInit is called.)
14This was required because of changes made to the C++ wxApp class.
15There are both benefits and potential problems with this change. The
16benefits are that you can import wxPython without requiring access to
17a GUI (for checking version numbers, etc.) and that in a
18multi-threaded environment the thread that creates the app object will
19now be the GUI thread instead of the one that imports wxPython. Some
20potential problems are that the C++ side of the "stock-objects"
21(wxBLUE_PEN, wxTheColourDatabase, etc.) are not initialized until the
22wxApp object is created, so you should not use them until then. Also,
23you will probably not be able to do any kind of GUI operation unless
24you have an app object first, (even on Windows where most anything was
25possible beofre.)
26
27Added wxMirrorDC.
28
29Added wxIconLocation
30
31wxPython's setup.py script now expects to use existing libraries for
32the contribs (gizmos, stc, xrc, etc.) rather than building local
33copies of them.
34

35Added Python wrappers for the new wxVScrolledWindow, wxVListBox, and
36wxHtmlListBox classes.

38Added wrappers for wxBookCtrl and wxListbook. wxNotebook now derives
39from wxBookCtrl.

51Added wxPython.lib.newevent from Miki Tebeka. Its usage is
52demonstrated in the Threads sample in the demo.
53
54Updates to wxMaskedEditCtrl.
55
56Added wxMaskedNumCtrl.
57
58Added Chris Barker's FloatCanvas.

60
61
622.4.1.2
63-------
64
65Added wxScrolledPanel from Will Sadkin
66
67Added SetShape method to top level windows (e.g. wxFrame.)
68
69Changed wxSWIG to not generate Python code using apply, (since it will
70be deprecated in the future) wxSWIG will use spam(*args, **kw) syntax
71instead. Also changed the generated __repr__ methods to be a bit more
72informative.
73
74Made the version number information more robust and uh, informative.
75Also added asserts to check that the major.minor versions of wxPython
76and wxWindows match.
77
78Added the new wx "renamer" package that will dynamically import from
79the wxPython package and rename wxFooBar --> FooBar. That means that
80people can do imports without "import *" and can use names like
81wx.Frame instead of wx.wxFrame. This is phase 1 of a full transition
82to the new namespace.
83
84Updated Scintilla to 1.52. I also changed it to use wxListCtrl
85instead of wxListBox for the AutoComplete window, added the ability to
86use custom bitmaps in the margin and in the AutoComplete windows, and
87worked out how to do proper clipping of child windows on wxGTK.
88
89Patrick O'Brien's PyCrust package has been renamed to Py and now
90includes several new tools. As part of the change the location of the
91pacakge has changed as well, it is now accessible as "from wxPython
92import py" (or "from wx import py" using the new namespace.) There
93are still some transition modules in the wxPython.lib.PyCrust package
94that will issue a warning and then import what is needed from the new
95package. These will be removed in a future release.
96
97Added __nonzero__ method to wxTreeItemId, wxBitmap, wxImage, wxFont,
98and most other classes that have an Ok or IsOK method. This allows
99code like "if obj: ..." to be the same as "if obj.IsOk(): ..."
100
101Toolbars on wxMac can now have controls on them.
102
103Added wxPython.lib.analogclock module based on samples that were
104passed back and forth on wxPython-users a while back.
105
106Added masked edit controls (wxPython.lib.maskededit) by Jeff Childers
107and Will Sadkin. Updated wxTimeCtrl to use MaskedEdit.
108
109When the __class__ of a dead object is replaced with _wxPyDeadObject
110the __del__ of the original class is now called first.
111
112Added wxTreeListCtrl. (Looks like a wxTreeCtrl embedded in a
113wxListCtrl, but actually is just giving multiple columns to a
114wxTreeCtrl.)
115
116Added wxFutureCall, a subclass of wxTimer that makes it easy to delay
117a call to any Python callable object.
118
119Added wxPy versions of wxPrintPreview, wxPreviewFrame, and
120wxPreviewControlBar so they can be derived from in Python and be able
121to override the C++ virtual methods.
122
123Simplified how the wxSizer methods are wrapped, changed the name of
124the "option" parameter to "proportion" to match the docs ("option" is
125still accepted for compatibility, but this will go away in a future
126release,) SetItemMinSize can now take a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter,
127and Spacers can be specified with a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter
128
129Added wxCursorFromBits.

133
134
1352.4.0.7
136-------
137Gave up on generating a warning upon the use of the old true/false or
138TRUE/FALSE values.
139
140Fixed wxGenericTreeCtrl (used on wxGTK and wxMac for wxTreeCtrl) so
141that it can successfully handle lots of nodes instead of overflowing
142when the virtual height of the widget overflowed a 16-bit value.
143
144Fixed the typemap that converts strings to wxColours to also accept
145unicode.
146
147Fixed problem where the wrong class name could sometimes be used for
148OOR.
149
150Fixed an interpreter lock problem in the __eq__ and __ne__ methods in
151wxSize and etc.
152
153Updated PyCrust to version 0.9
154
155Instead of always logging C++ assertions, added wxPYAPP_ASSERT_LOG
156flag to turn it on. In most cases turning it into an exception (the
157default behavior) is enough. See below in the 2.3.4.1 notes for more
158details.
159
160
161
162
1632.4.0.6 (a.k.a. the I'm so stupid release)
164-------
165The new deprecation class for the old true/false symbols can now be
166returned from OnInit. And I promise to be sure I am testing what I
167think I am testing in the future...
168
169
170
1712.4.0.5 (a.k.a. the blame it on Kevin release)
172-------
173A few little but annoying bug fixes.
174
175Updated pycolourchooser.
176
177Updated to 0.9b of PyCrust.
178
179
180
1812.4.0.4
182-------
183Added missing wxRect methods
184
185Add OOR support for wxApp objects too.
186
187Added wxCursorFromImage, which works on wxMSW and wxGTK so far.
188
189All platforms now send EVT_DESTROY_WINDOW. Be warned that at the time
190the event is sent the window is in the process of being deconstructed,
191and so calling some (most?) methods of the window itself may cause
192problems.
193
194Fixed SF Bug #689481, a method in the OGL wrappers was using the wrong
195return type.
196
197Fixed SF Bug #689958, an endless loop in printout.py.
198
199Added EVT_WINDOW_CREATE_ID and EVT_WINDOW_DESTROY_ID so these events
200can be associated with a specific window ID and more easily caught by
201the parent window.
202
203Fixed copy-paste error in wxListCtrl.GetFirstSelected.
204
205Added missing Init method (and an overloading wrapper) to wxLocale
206wrapper.
207
208Added a wxBitmap.SetMaskColour convenience method.
209
210Changed how the dynamic event tables (used for all Python wx classes,
211C++ wx classes typically use static event tables) are searched such
212that they behave from a Python perspective more like the static tables
213in C++. Namely that if there are identical event bindings in a base
214Python class and a derived Python class that the one in the derived
215class will be found first and that if Skip is called that the one in
216the base class will still be found instead of skipping directly to the
217static stable in the C++ class.
218
219Switched to using True/False in the wxPython lib and demo instead of
220true/false or TRUE/FALSE to prepare for the new boolean type and
221constants being added to Python. Added code to wx.py to test for the
222existence of the new constants and to create suitable values if not
223present.
224
225Added some static wxApp functions that help with integration with the
226Mac UI. They are no-ops on other platforms so it doesn't hurt to
227always call them. The functions are:
228
229 wxApp_GetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
230 wxApp_GetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
231 wxApp_GetMacAboutMenuItemId
232 wxApp_GetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
233 wxApp_GetMacExitMenuItemId
234 wxApp_GetMacHelpMenuTitleName
235 wxApp_SetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
236 wxApp_SetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
237 wxApp_SetMacAboutMenuItemId
238 wxApp_SetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
239 wxApp_SetMacExitMenuItemId
240 wxApp_SetMacHelpMenuTitleName
241
242Refactored, enhanced and added capabilities for the DrawXXXList
243functions, inspired by code from Chris Barker.
244
245The wxWindows .mo language catalog files are now installed in a
246subdirectory of the wxPython package dir on MSW since that platform
247doesn't have a standard place for them.
248
249Added missing deselect methods for wxGrid.
250
251Fixed typemaps for wxGridCellCoordsArray.
252
253Updated to the 0.9a version of PyCrust
254
255
256
2572.4.0.2
258-------
259Several bug fixes.
260
261Added wxIntCtrl from Will Sadkin.
262
263Added wxPyColourChooser by Michael Gilfix.
264
265
266
267
2682.4.0.1
269-------
270No major new features since 2.3.4.2, mostly bug fixes and minor
271enhancements.
272
273Added function wrappers for the common dialogs from Kevin Altis. See
274wxPython/lib/dialogs.py for more details.
275
276
277
2782.3.4.2
279-------
280Various bug fixes.
281
282
283
2842.3.4.1
285-------
286Updated XRCed and wxTimeCtrl contribs.
287
288Show a couple new wxGrid features in the demo.
289
290Several bug fixes in wxWindows.
291
292Added wxHtmlFilter.
293
294wxASSERT and related C++ runtime diagnostics are now converted to
295Python exceptions. When an assert happens a wxPyAssertionError
296(which derives from AssertionError) exception is created and when
297control returns back to the Python code that invoked the C++ API it
298will be raised. The same exception restrictions are in place as
299before, namely that exceptions can't cross from one Python layer
300through C++ to another Python layer. That simply means that if you
301want to catch wxPyAssertionError or any other exception that you need
302to do it before control returns to C++ at the end of your event
303handler or callback code. There is some test code in demo/wxButton.py
304you can use to play with this new feature.
305
306Added some methods to wxApp (SetAssertMode and GetAssertMode) that let
307you control how C++ assertions are processed. Valid modes are:
308wxPYAPP_ASSERT_SUPPRESS, wxPYAPP_ASSERT_EXCEPTION, and
309wxPYAPP_ASSERT_DIALOG. Using _SUPPRESS will give you behavior like
310the old "final" builds and the assert will be ignored, _EXCEPTION is
311the new default described above, and _DIALOG is like the default in
3122.3.3.1 and prior "hybrid" builds. You can also combine _EXCEPTION
313and _DIALOG if you wish, although I don't know why you would.
314
315You can now overload OnInitGui, OnExit and OnAssert in your classes
316derived from wxApp.
317
318Added GetSelectedCells, GetSelectionBlockTopLeft,
319GetSelectionBlockBottomRight, GetSelectedRows, GetSelectedCols nethods
320to wxGrid.
321
322Added Python == and != operators for some basic classes
323
324Fixed the Python wrappers for wxInputStream so they no longer block
325when reading from a wxProcess on wxGTK. They now work more or less as
326they did before 2.3.3.1 but the dual meaning of eof() has been
327removed. There is now a CanRead() method that lets you know if there
328is data waiting to be read from the pipe.
329
330Fixed method name clash in wxIEHtmlWin, renamed Refresh to RefreshPage.
331
332Added Throbber from Cliff Wells to the library and the demo.
333
334Windows installer prompts to uninstall old version first.
335
336Added wxPython.lib.evtmgr by Robb Shecter, which is an easier, more
337"Pythonic" and more OO method of registering handlers for wxWindows
338events using the Publish/Subscribe pattern.
339
340Added wxPython.lib.popupctl by Gerrit van Dyk which is a combobox-like
341gizmo for poping up arbitrary controls. It is currently using
342wxDialog because of some issues with wxPopupWindow...
343
344Added wxPython.lib.gridmovers by Gerrit van Dyk which facilitates the
345dragging of columns and/or rows in a wxGrid.
346
347Added wxPython.lib.multisash by Gerrit van Dyk which is a nice
348implementation of allowing the user to split a window any number of
349times either horizontally or vertically, and to close the split off
350windows when desired.
351
352Added helpviewer tool that displays HTML books similarly to how MS
353HTMLHelp viewer does. Changed how the wxPythonDocs tarball is built
354and added a script to launch the doc viewer.
355
356
357
358
3592.3.3.1
360-------
b5a5d647
RD
361Added wxSplashScreen.
362
68320e40
RD
363Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
364
ce914f73 365Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 366
769a9cb2 367The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
bffe56c5
RD
368wxPopupWindow if available on the platform (and functioning correctly)
369so they can extend beyond the client area of the STC if needed.
769a9cb2 370
f74ff5ef
RD
371Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
372added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
373be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
374
afb810d9
RD
375Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
376data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
377convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 378
68bc8549
RD
379Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
380This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
381row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
382spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
383Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
384wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 385
18fc9fa3
RD
386Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
387
e9159fe8
RD
388Added wxBufferedDC.
389
a834585d 390Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45, and then again
f114b858 391to version 1.47, and one more time to 1.48! <wink>
1a2fb4cd 392
b96c7a38 393UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
394 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
395 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
396 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 397 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
398 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
399 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
400 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
401
402 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
403 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
404 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
405 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
406 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
407 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
408 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
409 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
410 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
411 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
412 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
413
414 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
415 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
416 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
417 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
418 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
419 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
420 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
421 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
422 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
423 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
424 method.
425
726fc00a 426Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 427
0e9b78ce
RD
428Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
429
68bc8549
RD
430Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
431
c8b34a16
RD
432A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
433whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
434to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
435crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
436pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
437Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
438a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
439for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 440
33ff77f6
RD
441Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
442wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 443derived classes.
33ff77f6 444
d55d6b3f
RD
445Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
446the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 447
94e36a51
RD
448Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
449application.
b5a5d647 450
3b867149
RD
451Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
452wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
453methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
454supported are:
455
456 DoMoveWindow
457 DoSetSize
458 DoSetClientSize
459 DoSetVirtualSize
460 DoGetSize
461 DoGetClientSize
462 DoGetPosition
463 DoGetVirtualSize
464 DoGetBestSize
465 InitDialog
466 TransferDataFromWindow
467 TransferDataToWindow
468 Validate
469 AcceptsFocus
470 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
471 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
472 AddChild
473 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 474
3b867149
RD
475 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
476 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
477
478Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
479DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
480
a66212dc
RD
481Added wxArtProvider.
482
483Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
484(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
485are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
486something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
487implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
488
489Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
490
f9b24f07
RD
491Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
492creating a ScrolledPanel.
493
3eb221f6
RD
494Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
495other menu stuff.
c731eb47 496
3eb221f6
RD
497Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
498ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 499C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 500so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 501
763d71e4
RD
502Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
503modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
504transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
505tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 506win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
763d71e4 507
5fea3204
RD
508Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
509so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
510respond to mouse events and etc.
511
d6a3401d
RD
512Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
513on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
514
f6f98ecc 515Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c 516import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
a6151d99
RD
517tools in your own scripts or apps as needed. On Linux and OS X the
518tool scripts are installed to {prefix}/bin so you should be able to
519easily launch them from the command line. For example, PyCrust can be
520started with just the "pycrust" command.
bd4b9c8c 521
3b867149
RD
522Added a sample to the demo that catches various key events and
523displays the details of the event.
524

564
565Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
1e4a197e
RD
566default C++ constructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
567corresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
09f3d4e6
RD
568creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
569as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
570passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
571resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
572the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
573etc.

717Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
718convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
719converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
720containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
721included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
722specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
723compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
724convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
725wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
726the implementation.

748 GetGridWindow
749 GetGridRowLabelWindow
750 GetGridColLabelWindow
751 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
752
753Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
754representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
755On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
756
757
758***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
759 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
760 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
761 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
762 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
763 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
764 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
765 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
766 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
767 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
768 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
769 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
770 use weak references.)
771
772 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
773 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
774 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
775 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
776 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
777 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
778 object-type related oddities to me.
779***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
780
781There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
782in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython

784finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
785
786Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my

794useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help

834bar after 2 seconds.
835
836Added wxJoystick.
837
838Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with

846Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into

848the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
849the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b

850libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
851wxPython/src/export.h
852
853Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
854extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
855utils. Will probably add more later.
856
1b62f00d
RD
857Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
858wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
859wxPrinterDC2 name.
860
861Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
862that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
863
864Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
865
866Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
867mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
868

875New in 2.2.2
876------------
877
878Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
879Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
880from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
881that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
882releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
883have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
884interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
885some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
886how things work.
887
888I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
889of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
890This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
891builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
892use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
893platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
894wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
895install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
896using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
897
898Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
899contributed by Joerg Baumann.
900
901Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
902get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
903get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
904stdin.
905
906Removed the old python sizers.
907
908Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
909and wxRealPoint.
910
911Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
912the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
913libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
914
915Lots of little fixes here and there.
916
917Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
918wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
919wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

963WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
964Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
965handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
966confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
967coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
968generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
969the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
970modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.

1007new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
1008consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
1009good...)

1014
1015Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
1016It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
1017in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
1018on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
1019needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
1020just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
1021method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
1022matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
1023them.
1024
1025Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
1026expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
1027defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
1028"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
1029
1030I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
1031wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
1032wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
1033but I've included a very readable source file in the
1034wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
1035can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
1036http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
1037until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
1038provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

1047Updated wxMVCTree and added a demo for it, also fixed layout on GTK
1048and some flicker problems.
1049
1050Added a wrapper class for the Visualization ToolKit (or VTK) in the
1051wxPython.lib.vtk module. (http://www.kitware.com/)
1052
1053Fixed wxTreeCtrl.SetItemImage and GetItemImage to recognise the new
1054"which" parameter.
1055
1056Added wxPython.lib.spashscreen from Mike Fletcher.
1057
1058Added wxPython.lib.filebrowsebutton also from Mike Fletcher.
1059
1060Renamed wxTreeCtrl.GetParent to GetItemParent to avoid a name clash
1061with wxWindow.GetParent.
1062
1063Added wxIntersectRect to compute the intersection of two wxRect's.
1064It is used like this:
1065
1066 intersect = wxIntersectRect(rect1, rect2)
1067
1068If r1 and r2 don't intersect then None is returned, otherwise the
1069rectangle representing the intersection is returned.
1070
1071Some bug fixes for Clipboard and Drag-n-Drop.

1074
1075Added a set of Generic Buttons to the library. These are simple
1076window classes that look and act like native buttons, but you can have
1077a bit more control over them. The bezel width can be set in addition
1078to colours, fonts, etc. There is a ToggleButton as well as Bitmap
9e57c2a0

1079versions too. They should also serve as a good example of how to
1080create your own classes derived from wxControl.

1082The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
1083wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
1084but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
1085support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
1086methods look like this:
1087
1088 def AddTool(ID,
1089 bitmap,
1090 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
1091 toggle = FALSE,
1092 clientData = NULL,
1093 shortHelpString = "",
1094 longHelpString = "")
1095
1096 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
1097 bitmap,
1098 shortHelpString = "",
1099 longHelpString = "",
1100 toggle=FALSE)
1101
1102
1e4a197e 1103There are also corresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
9b3d3bc4
RD
1104that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.
1105
9e57c2a0 1106Added a wrapper for the new PCX and TIFF ImageHandlers.

1128What's new in 2.1.11
1129--------------------
1130Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
1131syncronized.
1132
1133wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
1134wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
1135itself.
1136
1137Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
1138being added. This should remove the need for our
1139wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
1140
1141wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
1142no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
1143probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
1144a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
1145an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
1146
1147Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
1148
1149Added new HTML printing classes.
1150
1151Added wxWindow.GetHandle
1152
1153Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
1154it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
1155(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
1156wxPoint.)
1157
1158Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
1159processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
1160thread from other threads.
1161
1162Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
1163
1164Added wxFontEnumerator.
1165
1166Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
1167
1168wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
1169Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
1170
1171Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
1172
1173Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on
1174wxGTK...
1175
1176Added an MVC tree control from Bryn Keller to the library.

1181What's new in 2.1.5
1182-------------------
1183This is a quick bug-fix release to take care of a few nasties that
1184crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
1185major features.
1186
1187
1188
1189What's new in 2.1.4
1190--------------------
1191
1192This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
1193wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
1194binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
1195wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
1196To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
1197the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
1198
1199Now back to what's new...
1200
1201Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
1202
1203Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
1204
1205Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
1206of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
1207anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
1208list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
1209memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
1210great!
1211
1212Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
1213SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
1214default sort order.
1215
1216Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
1217either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
1218example, the following are equivallent:
1219
1220 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
1221 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
1222
1223Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
1224handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
1225is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
1226understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
1227pages. See the demo for an example.
1228
1229A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
1230wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
1231
1232Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
1233
1234Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
1235versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
1236warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
1237disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
1238the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
1239added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
1240smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
1241that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
1242not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
1243wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
1244portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
1245further details.
1246
1247Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
1248wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
1249accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
1250directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
1251that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
1252Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
1253for more info and examples in future releases.
1254
1255Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
1256from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
1257wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
1258all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
1259different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
1260columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
1261to use them.
1262
1263Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
1264that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
1265the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
1266method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
1267in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
1268of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
1269in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
1270there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
1271enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
1272be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
1273pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
1274
1275I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
1276years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
1277object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
1278value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
1279sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
1280them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
1281default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
1282creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
1283to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
1284back again the next time something is written. (You can call
1285app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
1286redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
1287object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
1288class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
1289RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
1290wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
1291
1292 class MyApp(wxApp):
1293 outputWindowClass = MyClass
1294
1295 def OnInit(self):
1296 frame = MyFrame()
1297 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
1298 return true
1299
1300Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
1301wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
1302your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
1303to really screw things up.
1304
1305Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
1306in the wxWindows docs...
1307
1308Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
1309shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
1310shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
1311that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
1312frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
1313bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
1314a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
1315problems...)
1316
1317
1318
1319
1320What's new in 2.1b3
1321--------------------
1322
1323This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
1324
1325Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
1326for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
1327patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
1328old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
1329features:
1330
1331 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
1332 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
1333 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
1334
1335 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
1336
1337 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
1338 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
1339 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
1340 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
1341
1342
1343There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
1344raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
1345Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
1346see distrib/build.py for more details.
1347
1348wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
1349two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
1350takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
1351interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
1352
1353
1354
1355
1356
1357What's new in 2.1b2
1358--------------------
1359
1360Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
1361
1362Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
1363provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
1364their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
1365It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1366line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1367
1368It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1369process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1370prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1371is being unloaded by Python.
1372
1373I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1374make wxPython look bad.
1375
1376wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1377wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1378
1379Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1380
1381You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1382wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1383
1384Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1385code to show how to use it.
1386
1387Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1388matches MSW's.
1389
1390Added wxGrid.GetCells
1391
1392Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1393wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1394
1395Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1396wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1397
1398Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1399 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1400
1401Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1402objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1403a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1404
1405Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1406data transfer.
1407
1408Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1409
1410New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1411for unix systems.
1412
1413Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1414
1415SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1416in wx.cpp.
1417
1418
1419
1420
1421
1422What's new in 2.1b1
1423--------------------
1424Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1425item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1426wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1427
1428Added the Printing Framework.
1429
1430Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1431version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1432data after loading each extension module.
1433
1434Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1435wxWindows classes.
1436
1437Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1438symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1439when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1440
1441wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1442of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1443types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1444not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1445
1446
1447
1448What's new in 2.0b9
1449-------------------
1450Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1451
1452Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1453wxPython application.
1454
1455Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1456
1457Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1458associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1459this feature off.
1460
1461Added wxSafeYield function.
1462
1463OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1464
1465Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1466how it all works.
1467
1468The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1469DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1470
1471Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1472
1473Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1474wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1475
1476Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1477
1478Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1479methods.
1480
1481
1482
1483What's new in 2.0b8
1484-------------------
1485Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1486
1487Several missing methods from various classes.
1488
1489Various bug fixes.
1490
1491
1492
1493What's new in 2.0b7
1494-------------------
1495Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1496
1497Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1498
1499
1500
1501What's new in 2.0b6
1502-------------------
1503Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1504Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1505
1506
1507What's new in 2.0b5
1508-------------------
1509Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1510reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1511wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1512wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1513with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1514
1515I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1516in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1517have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1518diverges from wxWindows.
1519
1520Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1521window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1522it should just work... More news on this later.
1523
1524Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1525
1526Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the

1541
1542What's new in 0.5.0
1543-------------------
1544Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1545wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1546namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1547prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1548
1549Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1550
1551Made the events work for wxGrid.
1552

1554
1555Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1556
1557Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1558objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1559
1560Other assorted fixes and additions.

1564
1565What's new in 0.4.2
1566-------------------
1567
1568wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1569static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1570<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1571down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1572DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1573because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1574
1575The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1576must have been a different issue all along...
1577
1578
1579
1580What's New in 0.4
1581-----------------
1582
15831. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1584Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1585linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1586extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1587And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1588version segfault shortly after starting up.
1589
15902. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1591
15923. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1593
1594----------------------------------------------------------------------
