3----------------------------------------------------------------------
4
b5a5d647
RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2 13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
bffe56c5
RD
14wxPopupWindow if available on the platform (and functioning correctly)
15so they can extend beyond the client area of the STC if needed.
769a9cb2 16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35
1a2fb4cd
RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
3b867149
RD
96Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
97wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
117 AddChild
118 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 119
3b867149
RD
120 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
121 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
122
123Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
124DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
125
a66212dc
RD
126Added wxArtProvider.
127
128Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
129(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
130are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
131something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
132implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
133
134Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
135
f9b24f07
RD
136Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
137creating a ScrolledPanel.
138
3eb221f6
RD
139Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
140other menu stuff.
c731eb47 141
3eb221f6
RD
142Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
143ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 144C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 145so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 146
763d71e4
RD
147Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
148modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
149transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
150tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 151win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
763d71e4 152
5fea3204
RD
153Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
154so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
155respond to mouse events and etc.
156
d6a3401d
RD
157Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
158on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
159
f6f98ecc 160Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c 161import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
a6151d99
RD
162tools in your own scripts or apps as needed. On Linux and OS X the
163tool scripts are installed to {prefix}/bin so you should be able to
164easily launch them from the command line. For example, PyCrust can be
165started with just the "pycrust" command.
bd4b9c8c 166
3b867149
RD
167Added a sample to the demo that catches various key events and
168displays the details of the event.
169
af83019e
RD
170Added wxWizard, wxWizardPage, wxWizardPageSimple and wxPyWizardPage.
171
628c7f79
RD
172Added wxXmlResourceHandler which allows you to create custom handlers
173for nonstandard class types in XRC resources. See the demo for an
174example.
175
763d71e4 176
3bd1e033 177
b8510c2f 178
4268f798 1792.3.2.1
71f1334b 180-------
4268f798
RD
181Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
182well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
183without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
184
185Added some patches from library contributors.
186
187
188
ebf4302c 1892.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
190-----
191Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
192EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
193wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
194and a demo to show them in action.
195
fea018f8
RD
196Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
197http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 198
c7e7022c 199Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 200
00b6c4e3 201Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 202
09f3d4e6
RD
203Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
204Rolinsky.
205
206Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 207default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
208coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
209creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
210as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
211passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
212resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
213the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
214etc.
215
fe0aca37 216Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
217accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
218from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
219means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
220are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
221wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 222
6d19860f
RD
223Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
224column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
225using wxColumnSorterMixin.
226
53fe40ba 227Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 228
6d8b4f8d 229Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 230
431f4c16 231Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 232
19a97bd6
RD
233Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
234are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
235multi-processor machine.
236
76bfdc78
RD
237Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
238messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
239
0122b7e3
RD
240Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
241
71f1334b
RD
242The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
243wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
244that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
245created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
246exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
247original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 248
9d37f964
RD
249Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
250DrawPointList.
251
79f1bf32
RD
252Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
253
729f4276
RD
254Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
255text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 256
71f1334b 257Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
258and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
259of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
260browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
261if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
262wx-dev list.
263
264Added wxStopWatch.
265
266Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
267
c0c84fa0
RD
268Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
269will now Disconnect the event.
270
271Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
272
7dbce44a
RD
273Added wxFileHistory.
274
71f1334b 275Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 276by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 277this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
278same document.
279
611dc22c
RD
280Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
281
78e8819c
RD
282Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
283Feuer.
284
285Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
286were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
287additional columns for each item. The classes are
288wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
289wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
290also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 291
4a61305d
RD
292Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
293from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
294wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
295visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
296SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
297wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
298details.
299
b37c7e1d 300
fea018f8
RD
301
302
286e2db6 3032.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
304-----
305Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
306code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
307on a custom event handler for example.)
308
d56cebe7
RD
309Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
310GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
311
312Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
313subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
314
315Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
316
317Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
318
286e2db6
RD
319Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
320
321Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
322
bf7945ce 323
9416aa89
RD
324
3252.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
326-----
327Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 328glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
329
330Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
331wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
332ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
333
334Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
335
1af9e5c5 336Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
337wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
338colour database.
339
6e18ca6c
RD
340Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
341wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
342access from non-GUI threads.
343
1af9e5c5
RD
344wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
345use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 346
6bb38ab6
RD
347Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
348
6bb38ab6
RD
349Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
350that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
351
49875c53
RD
352Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
353wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
354
e0672e2f
RD
355Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
356it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 357
1af9e5c5
RD
358Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
359convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
360converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
361containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
362included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
363specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
364compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
365convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
366wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
367the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
368
369Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
370experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
371many refreshes.
372
d1679124
RD
373A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
374the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 375
d7ec6564 376Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 377
d7ec6564 378Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 379
3b36695d
RD
380Added wxToggleButton.
381
382Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 383
9416aa89
RD
384Added some methods to wxGrid:
385 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
386 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
387 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
388 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
389 GetGridWindow
390 GetGridRowLabelWindow
391 GetGridColLabelWindow
392 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
393
394Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
395representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
396On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
397
398
399***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
400 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
401 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
402 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
403 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
404 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
405 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
406 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
407 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
408 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
409 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
410 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
411 use weak references.)
412
413 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
414 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
415 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
416 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
417 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
418 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
419 object-type related oddities to me.
420***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
421
422There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
423in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
424specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
425finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
426
427Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
428list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 429
10e07c70 430Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 431
493f1553
RD
432Added wxWave.
433
30aaddfe
RD
434Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
435useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
436make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
437Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
438of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
439please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
440
25832b3f
RD
441Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
442by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
443wxPython/samples.

459New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
460that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
461a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
462it to a wxString using the default encoding.
463
464Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
465
466Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
467
468Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 469a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
470
471Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
472column in report mode.
473
474Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
475bar after 2 seconds.
476
477Added wxJoystick.
478
479Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
480a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
481object, (usually a window.)
482

487Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into
488multiple extension modules again. A Python CObject is used to allow
1b62f00d
RD
489the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
490the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b
RD
491libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
492wxPython/src/export.h
493
494Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
495extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
496utils. Will probably add more later.
497
1b62f00d
RD
498Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
499wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
500wxPrinterDC2 name.
501
502Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
503that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
504
505Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
506
507Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
508mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
509
510Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
511integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
512XML-RPC server.

516New in 2.2.2
517------------
518
519Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
520Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
521from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
522that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
523releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
524have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
525interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
526some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
527how things work.
528
529I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
530of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
531This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
532builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
533use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
534platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
535wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
536install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
537using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
538
539Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
540contributed by Joerg Baumann.
541
542Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
543get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
544get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
545stdin.
546
547Removed the old python sizers.
548
549Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
550and wxRealPoint.
551
552Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
553the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
554libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
555
556Lots of little fixes here and there.
557
558Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
559wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
560wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

604WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
605Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
606handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
607confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
608coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
609generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
610the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
611modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.

644Plugged a memory leak.
645
646Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
647available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
648new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
649consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
650good...)
651
652Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
653authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
654mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
655
656Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
657It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
658in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
659on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
660needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
661just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
662method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
663matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
664them.
665
666Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
667expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
668defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
669"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
670
671I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
672wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
673wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
674but I've included a very readable source file in the
675wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
676can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
677http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
678until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
679provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

690
691Added a wrapper class for the Visualization ToolKit (or VTK) in the

693
694Fixed wxTreeCtrl.SetItemImage and GetItemImage to recognise the new

699Added wxPython.lib.filebrowsebutton also from Mike Fletcher.
700
701Renamed wxTreeCtrl.GetParent to GetItemParent to avoid a name clash
702with wxWindow.GetParent.
703
704Added wxIntersectRect to compute the intersection of two wxRect's.
705It is used like this:
706
707 intersect = wxIntersectRect(rect1, rect2)
708
709If r1 and r2 don't intersect then None is returned, otherwise the

716Added a set of Generic Buttons to the library. These are simple
717window classes that look and act like native buttons, but you can have

719to colours, fonts, etc. There is a ToggleButton as well as Bitmap

723The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
724wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
725but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
726support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
727methods look like this:
728
729 def AddTool(ID,
730 bitmap,
731 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
732 toggle = FALSE,
733 clientData = NULL,
734 shortHelpString = "",
735 longHelpString = "")
736
737 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
738 bitmap,
739 shortHelpString = "",
740 longHelpString = "",
741 toggle=FALSE)
742
743
744There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
745that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.
746
9e57c2a0 747Added a wrapper for the new PCX and TIFF ImageHandlers.

769What's new in 2.1.11
770--------------------
771Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
772syncronized.
773
774wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
775wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
776itself.
777
778Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
779being added. This should remove the need for our
780wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
781
782wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
783no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
784probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
785a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
786an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
787
788Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
789
790Added new HTML printing classes.
791
792Added wxWindow.GetHandle
793
794Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
795it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
796(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
797wxPoint.)
798
799Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
800processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
801thread from other threads.
802
803Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
804
805Added wxFontEnumerator.
806
807Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
808
809wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
810Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
811
812Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
813
814Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on
815wxGTK...
816
817Added an MVC tree control from Bryn Keller to the library.

822What's new in 2.1.5
823-------------------
824This is a quick bug-fix release to take care of a few nasties that
825crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
826major features.
827
828
829
830What's new in 2.1.4
831--------------------
832
833This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
834wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
835binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
836wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
837To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
838the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
839
840Now back to what's new...
841
842Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
843
844Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
845
846Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
847of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
848anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
849list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
850memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
851great!
852
853Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
854SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
855default sort order.
856
857Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
858either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
859example, the following are equivallent:
860
861 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
862 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
863
864Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
865handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
866is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
867understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
868pages. See the demo for an example.
869
870A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
871wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
872
873Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
874
875Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
876versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
877warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
878disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
879the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
880added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
881smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
882that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
883not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
884wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
885portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
886further details.
887
888Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
889wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
890accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
891directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
892that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
893Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
894for more info and examples in future releases.
895
896Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
897from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
898wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
899all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
900different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
901columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
902to use them.
903
904Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
905that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
906the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
907method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
908in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
909of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
910in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
911there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
912enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
913be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
914pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
915
916I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
917years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
918object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
919value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
920sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
921them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
922default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
923creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
924to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
925back again the next time something is written. (You can call
926app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
927redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
928object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
929class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
930RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
931wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
932
933 class MyApp(wxApp):
934 outputWindowClass = MyClass
935
936 def OnInit(self):
937 frame = MyFrame()
938 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
939 return true
940
941Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
942wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
943your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
944to really screw things up.
945
946Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
947in the wxWindows docs...
948
949Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
950shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
951shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
952that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
953frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
954bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
955a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
956problems...)
957
958
959
960
961What's new in 2.1b3
962--------------------
963
964This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
965
966Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
967for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
968patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
969old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
970features:
971
972 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
973 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
974 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
975
976 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
977
978 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
979 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
980 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
981 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
982
983
984There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
985raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
986Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
987see distrib/build.py for more details.
988
989wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
990two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
991takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
992interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.

998What's new in 2.1b2
999--------------------
1000
1001Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
1002
1003Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
1004provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
1005their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
1006It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1007line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1008
1009It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1010process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1011prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1012is being unloaded by Python.
1013
1014I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1015make wxPython look bad.
1016
1017wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1018wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1019
1020Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1021
1022You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1023wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1024
1025Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1026code to show how to use it.
1027
1028Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1029matches MSW's.
1030
1031Added wxGrid.GetCells
1032
1033Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1034wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1035
1036Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1037wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1038
1039Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1040 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1041
1042Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1043objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1044a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1045
1046Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1047data transfer.
1048
1049Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1050
1051New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1052for unix systems.
1053
1054Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1055
1056SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1057in wx.cpp.
1058
1059
1060
1061
1062
1063What's new in 2.1b1
1064--------------------
1065Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1066item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1067wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1068
1069Added the Printing Framework.
1070
1071Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1072version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1073data after loading each extension module.
1074
1075Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1076wxWindows classes.
1077
1078Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1079symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1080when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1081
1082wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1083of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1084types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1085not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1086
1087
1088
1089What's new in 2.0b9
1090-------------------
1091Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1092
1093Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1094wxPython application.
1095
1096Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1097
1098Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1099associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1100this feature off.
1101
1102Added wxSafeYield function.
1103
1104OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1105
1106Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1107how it all works.
1108
1109The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1110DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1111
1112Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1113
1114Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1115wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1116
1117Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1118
1119Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1120methods.
1121
1122
1123
1124What's new in 2.0b8
1125-------------------
1126Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1127
1128Several missing methods from various classes.
1129
1130Various bug fixes.
1131
1132
1133
1134What's new in 2.0b7
1135-------------------
1136Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1137
1138Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1139
1140
1141
1142What's new in 2.0b6
1143-------------------
1144Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1145Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1146
1147
1148What's new in 2.0b5
1149-------------------
1150Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1151reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1152wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1153wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1154with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1155
1156I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1157in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1158have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1159diverges from wxWindows.
1160
1161Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1162window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1163it should just work... More news on this later.
1164
1165Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1166
1167Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1168wxRegConfig class.
1169
1170As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1171
1172
1173
1174What's new in 0.5.3
1175-------------------
1176Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1177
1178Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1179compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1180
1181
1182
1183What's new in 0.5.0
1184-------------------
1185Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1186wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1187namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1188prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1189
1190Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1191
1192Made the events work for wxGrid.
1193
1194Added wxConfig.
1195
1196Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1197
1198Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1199objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1200
1201Other assorted fixes and additions.
1202
1203
1204
1205
1206What's new in 0.4.2
1207-------------------
1208
1209wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1210static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1211<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1212down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1213DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1214because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1215
1216The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1217must have been a different issue all along...
1218
1219
1220
1221What's New in 0.4
1222-----------------
1223
12241. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1225Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1226linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1227extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1228And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1229version segfault shortly after starting up.
1230
12312. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1232
12333. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1234
1235----------------------------------------------------------------------
