RD
7(See also the MigrationGuide.txt file for details about some of the
8big changes that have happened in this release and how you should
9adapt your code.)
10
3ef86e32
RD
11Many, many little fixes, changes and additions done as part of the move
12to wxWindows 2.5 that I have forgotten about.
13
3ef86e32
RD
14Added wxMirrorDC.
15
16Added wxIconLocation
17
3628e088
RD
18Added Python wrappers for the new wxVScrolledWindow, wxVListBox, and
19wxHtmlListBox classes.
3ef86e32 20
edadef3f
RD
21Added wrappers for wxBookCtrl and wxListbook. wxNotebook now derives
22from wxBookCtrl.
23
9d6685e2
RD
24Added Gordon Williams' PyPlot module to the library, available as the
25wx.lib.plot module.
3ef86e32 26

RD
27I made a small but important change in the code that aquires the
28Python Global Interpreter Lock to try and prevent deadlocks that can
29happen when there are nested attempts to aquire the GIL.
30
31The RPMs will now install menu items on Mandrake in
32Applications/Development/Tools for PyCrust, XRCed, etc. They are also
8eda5e35 33installing icons and ``*.desktop`` items in the generic KDE and GNOME
e6a5dac6
RD
34locations, but I don't know yet if they are resulting in menu items on
35non-Mandrake systems. (It didn't automatically do it on my RH-9 build
36box but I didn't chase it very far...) If you have ideas for how to
37improve the .spec file to work better and/or on more distros please
38send me a patch.
39
40The RPMs are now built on a RH-9 box, and I have tested installing
41them also on my main Mandrake 9.2 box.
42
43There are some big changes in the OS X disk image. The actual
44Installer package now *only* installs the wxMac dynlibs, wxPython
45extension modules and pacakges, and also the command-line tool
46scripts. The remaining items (demo, samples, and application bundles
47for the Demo, PyCrust and XRCed) are now top-level items in the disk
48image (.dmg file) that users can just drag and drop to wherever they
49want to put them.
50

RD
51The wxWave class has been renamed to wxSound, and now has a slightly
52different API.

RD
57-------
58
1fded56b
RD
59Use wxSTC in the demo for displaying the soucre code of the samples.
60
8b9a4190 61Lots of bug fixes and such from the wxWindows folks.
1fded56b 62
8b9a4190
RD
63Added wxPython.lib.newevent from Miki Tebeka. Its usage is
64demonstrated in the Threads sample in the demo.
65
66Updates to wxMaskedEditCtrl.
67
68Added wxMaskedNumCtrl.
69
70Added Chris Barker's FloatCanvas.
1fded56b
RD
71
72
73
742.4.1.2
75-------
76
77Added wxScrolledPanel from Will Sadkin
78
79Added SetShape method to top level windows (e.g. wxFrame.)
80
81Changed wxSWIG to not generate Python code using apply, (since it will
8eda5e35 82be deprecated in the future) wxSWIG will use ``spam(*args, **kw)`` syntax
1fded56b
RD
83instead. Also changed the generated __repr__ methods to be a bit more
84informative.
85
86Made the version number information more robust and uh, informative.
87Also added asserts to check that the major.minor versions of wxPython
88and wxWindows match.
89
90Added the new wx "renamer" package that will dynamically import from
91the wxPython package and rename wxFooBar --> FooBar. That means that
8eda5e35 92people can do imports without ``"import *"`` and can use names like
1fded56b
RD
93wx.Frame instead of wx.wxFrame. This is phase 1 of a full transition
94to the new namespace.
95
96Updated Scintilla to 1.52. I also changed it to use wxListCtrl
97instead of wxListBox for the AutoComplete window, added the ability to
98use custom bitmaps in the margin and in the AutoComplete windows, and
99worked out how to do proper clipping of child windows on wxGTK.
100
101Patrick O'Brien's PyCrust package has been renamed to Py and now
102includes several new tools. As part of the change the location of the
103pacakge has changed as well, it is now accessible as "from wxPython
104import py" (or "from wx import py" using the new namespace.) There
105are still some transition modules in the wxPython.lib.PyCrust package
106that will issue a warning and then import what is needed from the new
107package. These will be removed in a future release.
108
109Added __nonzero__ method to wxTreeItemId, wxBitmap, wxImage, wxFont,
110and most other classes that have an Ok or IsOK method. This allows
111code like "if obj: ..." to be the same as "if obj.IsOk(): ..."
112
113Toolbars on wxMac can now have controls on them.
114
115Added wxPython.lib.analogclock module based on samples that were
116passed back and forth on wxPython-users a while back.
117
118Added masked edit controls (wxPython.lib.maskededit) by Jeff Childers
119and Will Sadkin. Updated wxTimeCtrl to use MaskedEdit.
120
121When the __class__ of a dead object is replaced with _wxPyDeadObject
122the __del__ of the original class is now called first.
123
124Added wxTreeListCtrl. (Looks like a wxTreeCtrl embedded in a
125wxListCtrl, but actually is just giving multiple columns to a
126wxTreeCtrl.)
127
128Added wxFutureCall, a subclass of wxTimer that makes it easy to delay
129a call to any Python callable object.
130
131Added wxPy versions of wxPrintPreview, wxPreviewFrame, and
132wxPreviewControlBar so they can be derived from in Python and be able
133to override the C++ virtual methods.
134
135Simplified how the wxSizer methods are wrapped, changed the name of
136the "option" parameter to "proportion" to match the docs ("option" is
137still accepted for compatibility, but this will go away in a future
138release,) SetItemMinSize can now take a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter,
139and Spacers can be specified with a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter
140
141Added wxCursorFromBits.
142
143
1e4a197e
RD
144
145
146
1472.4.0.7
148-------
8eda5e35 149
1e4a197e
RD
150Gave up on generating a warning upon the use of the old true/false or
151TRUE/FALSE values.
152
153Fixed wxGenericTreeCtrl (used on wxGTK and wxMac for wxTreeCtrl) so
154that it can successfully handle lots of nodes instead of overflowing
155when the virtual height of the widget overflowed a 16-bit value.
156
157Fixed the typemap that converts strings to wxColours to also accept
158unicode.
159
160Fixed problem where the wrong class name could sometimes be used for
161OOR.
162
163Fixed an interpreter lock problem in the __eq__ and __ne__ methods in
164wxSize and etc.
165
166Updated PyCrust to version 0.9
167
168Instead of always logging C++ assertions, added wxPYAPP_ASSERT_LOG
169flag to turn it on. In most cases turning it into an exception (the
170default behavior) is enough. See below in the 2.3.4.1 notes for more
171details.
172
173
174
175
1762.4.0.6 (a.k.a. the I'm so stupid release)
8eda5e35
RD
177------------------------------------------
178
1e4a197e
RD
179The new deprecation class for the old true/false symbols can now be
180returned from OnInit. And I promise to be sure I am testing what I
181think I am testing in the future...
182
183
184
1852.4.0.5 (a.k.a. the blame it on Kevin release)
8eda5e35
RD
186----------------------------------------------
187
1e4a197e
RD
188A few little but annoying bug fixes.
189
190Updated pycolourchooser.
191
192Updated to 0.9b of PyCrust.
193
194
195
1962.4.0.4
197-------
198Added missing wxRect methods
199
200Add OOR support for wxApp objects too.
201
202Added wxCursorFromImage, which works on wxMSW and wxGTK so far.
203
204All platforms now send EVT_DESTROY_WINDOW. Be warned that at the time
205the event is sent the window is in the process of being deconstructed,
206and so calling some (most?) methods of the window itself may cause
207problems.
208
209Fixed SF Bug #689481, a method in the OGL wrappers was using the wrong
210return type.
211
212Fixed SF Bug #689958, an endless loop in printout.py.
213
214Added EVT_WINDOW_CREATE_ID and EVT_WINDOW_DESTROY_ID so these events
215can be associated with a specific window ID and more easily caught by
216the parent window.
217
218Fixed copy-paste error in wxListCtrl.GetFirstSelected.
219
220Added missing Init method (and an overloading wrapper) to wxLocale
221wrapper.
222
223Added a wxBitmap.SetMaskColour convenience method.
224
225Changed how the dynamic event tables (used for all Python wx classes,
226C++ wx classes typically use static event tables) are searched such
227that they behave from a Python perspective more like the static tables
228in C++. Namely that if there are identical event bindings in a base
229Python class and a derived Python class that the one in the derived
230class will be found first and that if Skip is called that the one in
231the base class will still be found instead of skipping directly to the
232static stable in the C++ class.
233
234Switched to using True/False in the wxPython lib and demo instead of
235true/false or TRUE/FALSE to prepare for the new boolean type and
236constants being added to Python. Added code to wx.py to test for the
237existence of the new constants and to create suitable values if not
238present.
239
240Added some static wxApp functions that help with integration with the
241Mac UI. They are no-ops on other platforms so it doesn't hurt to
242always call them. The functions are:
243
244 wxApp_GetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
245 wxApp_GetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
246 wxApp_GetMacAboutMenuItemId
247 wxApp_GetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
248 wxApp_GetMacExitMenuItemId
249 wxApp_GetMacHelpMenuTitleName
250 wxApp_SetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
251 wxApp_SetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
252 wxApp_SetMacAboutMenuItemId
253 wxApp_SetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
254 wxApp_SetMacExitMenuItemId
255 wxApp_SetMacHelpMenuTitleName
256
257Refactored, enhanced and added capabilities for the DrawXXXList
258functions, inspired by code from Chris Barker.
259
260The wxWindows .mo language catalog files are now installed in a
261subdirectory of the wxPython package dir on MSW since that platform
262doesn't have a standard place for them.
263
264Added missing deselect methods for wxGrid.
265
266Fixed typemaps for wxGridCellCoordsArray.
267
268Updated to the 0.9a version of PyCrust
269
270
271
2722.4.0.2
273-------
274Several bug fixes.
275
276Added wxIntCtrl from Will Sadkin.
277
278Added wxPyColourChooser by Michael Gilfix.
279
280
281
282
2832.4.0.1
284-------
285No major new features since 2.3.4.2, mostly bug fixes and minor
286enhancements.
287
288Added function wrappers for the common dialogs from Kevin Altis. See
289wxPython/lib/dialogs.py for more details.
290
291
292
2932.3.4.2
294-------
295Various bug fixes.
296
297
298
2992.3.4.1
300-------
301Updated XRCed and wxTimeCtrl contribs.
302
303Show a couple new wxGrid features in the demo.
304
305Several bug fixes in wxWindows.
306
307Added wxHtmlFilter.
308
309wxASSERT and related C++ runtime diagnostics are now converted to
310Python exceptions. When an assert happens a wxPyAssertionError
311(which derives from AssertionError) exception is created and when
312control returns back to the Python code that invoked the C++ API it
313will be raised. The same exception restrictions are in place as
314before, namely that exceptions can't cross from one Python layer
315through C++ to another Python layer. That simply means that if you
316want to catch wxPyAssertionError or any other exception that you need
317to do it before control returns to C++ at the end of your event
318handler or callback code. There is some test code in demo/wxButton.py
319you can use to play with this new feature.
320
321Added some methods to wxApp (SetAssertMode and GetAssertMode) that let
322you control how C++ assertions are processed. Valid modes are:
323wxPYAPP_ASSERT_SUPPRESS, wxPYAPP_ASSERT_EXCEPTION, and
324wxPYAPP_ASSERT_DIALOG. Using _SUPPRESS will give you behavior like
325the old "final" builds and the assert will be ignored, _EXCEPTION is
326the new default described above, and _DIALOG is like the default in
3272.3.3.1 and prior "hybrid" builds. You can also combine _EXCEPTION
328and _DIALOG if you wish, although I don't know why you would.
329
330You can now overload OnInitGui, OnExit and OnAssert in your classes
331derived from wxApp.
332
333Added GetSelectedCells, GetSelectionBlockTopLeft,
334GetSelectionBlockBottomRight, GetSelectedRows, GetSelectedCols nethods
335to wxGrid.
336
337Added Python == and != operators for some basic classes
338
339Fixed the Python wrappers for wxInputStream so they no longer block
340when reading from a wxProcess on wxGTK. They now work more or less as
341they did before 2.3.3.1 but the dual meaning of eof() has been
342removed. There is now a CanRead() method that lets you know if there
343is data waiting to be read from the pipe.
344
345Fixed method name clash in wxIEHtmlWin, renamed Refresh to RefreshPage.
346
347Added Throbber from Cliff Wells to the library and the demo.
348
349Windows installer prompts to uninstall old version first.
350
351Added wxPython.lib.evtmgr by Robb Shecter, which is an easier, more
352"Pythonic" and more OO method of registering handlers for wxWindows
353events using the Publish/Subscribe pattern.
354
355Added wxPython.lib.popupctl by Gerrit van Dyk which is a combobox-like
356gizmo for poping up arbitrary controls. It is currently using
357wxDialog because of some issues with wxPopupWindow...
358
359Added wxPython.lib.gridmovers by Gerrit van Dyk which facilitates the
360dragging of columns and/or rows in a wxGrid.
361
362Added wxPython.lib.multisash by Gerrit van Dyk which is a nice
363implementation of allowing the user to split a window any number of
364times either horizontally or vertically, and to close the split off
365windows when desired.
366
367Added helpviewer tool that displays HTML books similarly to how MS
368HTMLHelp viewer does. Changed how the wxPythonDocs tarball is built
369and added a script to launch the doc viewer.
370
371
372
373
3742.3.3.1
375-------
b5a5d647
RD
376Added wxSplashScreen.
377
68320e40
RD
378Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
379
ce914f73 380Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 381
769a9cb2 382The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
bffe56c5
RD
383wxPopupWindow if available on the platform (and functioning correctly)
384so they can extend beyond the client area of the STC if needed.
769a9cb2 385
f74ff5ef
RD
386Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
387added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
388be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
389
afb810d9
RD
390Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
391data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
392convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 393
68bc8549
RD
394Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
395This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
396row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
397spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
398Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
399wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 400
18fc9fa3
RD
401Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
402
e9159fe8
RD
403Added wxBufferedDC.
404
a834585d 405Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45, and then again
f114b858 406to version 1.47, and one more time to 1.48! <wink>
1a2fb4cd 407
b96c7a38 408UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
409 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
410 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
411 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 412 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
413 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
414 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
415 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
416
417 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
418 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
419 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
420 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
421 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
422 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
423 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
424 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
425 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
426 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
427 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
428
429 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
430 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
431 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
432 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
433 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
434 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
435 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
436 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
437 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
438 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
439 method.
440
726fc00a 441Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 442
0e9b78ce
RD
443Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
444
68bc8549
RD
445Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
446
c8b34a16
RD
447A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
448whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
449to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
450crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
451pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
452Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
453a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
454for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 455
33ff77f6
RD
456Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
457wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 458derived classes.
33ff77f6 459
d55d6b3f
RD
460Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
461the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 462
94e36a51
RD
463Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
464application.
b5a5d647 465
3b867149
RD
466Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
467wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
468methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
469supported are:
470
471 DoMoveWindow
472 DoSetSize
473 DoSetClientSize
474 DoSetVirtualSize
475 DoGetSize
476 DoGetClientSize
477 DoGetPosition
478 DoGetVirtualSize
479 DoGetBestSize
480 InitDialog
481 TransferDataFromWindow
482 TransferDataToWindow
483 Validate
484 AcceptsFocus
485 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
486 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
487 AddChild
488 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 489
3b867149
RD
490 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
491 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
492
493Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
494DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
495
a66212dc
RD
496Added wxArtProvider.
497
498Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
499(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
500are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
501something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
502implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
503
504Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
505
f9b24f07
RD
506Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
507creating a ScrolledPanel.
508
3eb221f6
RD
509Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
510other menu stuff.
c731eb47 511
3eb221f6
RD
512Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
513ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 514C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 515so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 516
763d71e4

517Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
518modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
519transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
520tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 521win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...

RD
532tools in your own scripts or apps as needed. On Linux and OS X the
533tool scripts are installed to {prefix}/bin so you should be able to

580Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the

RD
581default C++ constructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
582corresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step

583creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
584as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
585passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
586resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
587the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
588etc.

732Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
733convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
734converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
735containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
736included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
737specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
738compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
739convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
740wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
741the implementation.

763 GetGridWindow
764 GetGridRowLabelWindow
765 GetGridColLabelWindow
766 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
767
768Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
769representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
770On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
771
8eda5e35 772OOR:
9416aa89
RD
773 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
774 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
775 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
776 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
777 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
778 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
779 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
780 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
781 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
782 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
783 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
784 use weak references.)
785
786 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
787 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
788 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
789 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
790 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
791 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
792 object-type related oddities to me.
8eda5e35 793
9416aa89
RD
794
795There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
796in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython

797specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
798finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
799
800Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my

806
30aaddfe
RD

808useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help

849
850Added wxJoystick.

860Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into

862the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
863the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b

864libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
865wxPython/src/export.h
866
867Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
868extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
869utils. Will probably add more later.
870
1b62f00d
RD
871Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
872wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
873wxPrinterDC2 name.
874
875Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
876that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
877
878Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
879
880Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
881mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
882
883Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not

889New in 2.2.2
890------------
891
892Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
893Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
894from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
895that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
896releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
897have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
898interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
899some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
900how things work.
901
902I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
903of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
904This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
905builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
906use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
907platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
908wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
909install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
910using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
911
912Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
913contributed by Joerg Baumann.
914
915Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
916get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
917get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
918stdin.
919
920Removed the old python sizers.
921
922Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
923and wxRealPoint.
924
925Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
926the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
927libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
928
929Lots of little fixes here and there.
930
931Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
932wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on

977WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
978Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
979handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
980confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
981coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
982generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
983the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

1012Fixed some problems in OGL. Also wxShape.SetClientData and
1013.GetClientData can now deal with Python objects.

1017Plugged a memory leak.
1018
1019Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
1020available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
1021new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
1022consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
1023good...)
1024
1025Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
1026authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
1027mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
1028
1029Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
1030It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
1031in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
1032on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
1033needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
1034just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
1035method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
1036matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
1037them.
1038
1039Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
1040expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
1041defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
1042"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
1043
1044I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
1045wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
1046wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
1047but I've included a very readable source file in the
1048wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
1049can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
1050http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
1051until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
1052provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

1061Updated wxMVCTree and added a demo for it, also fixed layout on GTK
1062and some flicker problems.
1063
1064Added a wrapper class for the Visualization ToolKit (or VTK) in the
1065wxPython.lib.vtk module. (http://www.kitware.com/)
1066
1067Fixed wxTreeCtrl.SetItemImage and GetItemImage to recognise the new
1068"which" parameter.
1069
1070Added wxPython.lib.spashscreen from Mike Fletcher.
1071
1072Added wxPython.lib.filebrowsebutton also from Mike Fletcher.
1073
1074Renamed wxTreeCtrl.GetParent to GetItemParent to avoid a name clash
1075with wxWindow.GetParent.
1076
1077Added wxIntersectRect to compute the intersection of two wxRect's.
1078It is used like this:
1079
1080 intersect = wxIntersectRect(rect1, rect2)
1081
1082If r1 and r2 don't intersect then None is returned, otherwise the
1083rectangle representing the intersection is returned.
1084
1085Some bug fixes for Clipboard and Drag-n-Drop.

1088
1089Added a set of Generic Buttons to the library. These are simple
1090window classes that look and act like native buttons, but you can have
1091a bit more control over them. The bezel width can be set in addition
1092to colours, fonts, etc. There is a ToggleButton as well as Bitmap
9e57c2a0

1096The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
1097wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
1098but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
1099support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
1100methods look like this:
1101
1102 def AddTool(ID,
1103 bitmap,
1104 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
1105 toggle = FALSE,
1106 clientData = NULL,
1107 shortHelpString = "",
1108 longHelpString = "")
1109
1110 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
1111 bitmap,
1112 shortHelpString = "",
1113 longHelpString = "",
1114 toggle=FALSE)
1115
1116

1142What's new in 2.1.11
1143--------------------
1144Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
1145syncronized.
1146
1147wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
1148wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
1149itself.
1150
1151Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
1152being added. This should remove the need for our
1153wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
1154
1155wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
1156no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
1157probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
1158a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
1159an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
1160
1161Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
1162
1163Added new HTML printing classes.
1164
1165Added wxWindow.GetHandle
1166
1167Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
1168it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
1169(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
1170wxPoint.)
1171
1172Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
1173processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
1174thread from other threads.
1175
1176Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
1177
1178Added wxFontEnumerator.
1179
1180Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
1181
1182wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
1183Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
1184
1185Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
1186
1187Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on
1188wxGTK...
1189
1190Added an MVC tree control from Bryn Keller to the library.

1195What's new in 2.1.5
1196-------------------
1197This is a quick bug-fix release to take care of a few nasties that
1198crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
1199major features.
1200
1201
1202
1203What's new in 2.1.4
1204--------------------
1205
1206This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
1207wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
1208binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
1209wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
1210To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
1211the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
1212
1213Now back to what's new...
1214
1215Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
1216
1217Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
1218
1219Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
1220of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
1221anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
1222list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
1223memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
1224great!
1225
1226Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
1227SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
1228default sort order.
1229
1230Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
1231either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
1232example, the following are equivallent:
1233
1234 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
1235 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
1236
1237Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
1238handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
1239is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
1240understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
1241pages. See the demo for an example.
1242
1243A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
1244wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
1245
1246Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
1247
1248Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
1249versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
1250warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
1251disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
1252the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
1253added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
1254smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
1255that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
1256not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
1257wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
1258portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
1259further details.
1260
1261Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
1262wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
1263accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
1264directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
1265that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
1266Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
1267for more info and examples in future releases.
1268
1269Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
1270from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
1271wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
1272all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
1273different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
1274columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
1275to use them.
1276
1277Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
1278that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
1279the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
1280method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
1281in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
1282of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
1283in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
1284there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
1285enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
1286be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
1287pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
1288
1289I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
1290years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
1291object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
1292value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
1293sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
1294them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
1295default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
1296creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
1297to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
1298back again the next time something is written. (You can call
1299app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
1300redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
1301object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
1302class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
1303RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
1304wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
1305
1306 class MyApp(wxApp):
1307 outputWindowClass = MyClass
1308
1309 def OnInit(self):
1310 frame = MyFrame()
1311 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
1312 return true
1313
1314Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
1315wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
1316your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
1317to really screw things up.
1318
1319Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
1320in the wxWindows docs...
1321
1322Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
1323shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
1324shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
1325that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
1326frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
1327bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
1328a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
1329problems...)
1330

1332
1333
1334What's new in 2.1b3
1335--------------------
1336
1337This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
1338
1339Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
1340for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
1341patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
1342old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
1343features:
1344
1345 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
1346 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
1347 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
1348
1349 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
1350
1351 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
1352 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
1353 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
1354 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
1355
1356
1357There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
1358raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
1359Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
1360see distrib/build.py for more details.
1361
1362wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
1363two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
1364takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
1365interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
1366
1367
1368
1369
1370
1371What's new in 2.1b2
1372--------------------
1373
1374Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
1375
1376Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
1377provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
1378their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
1379It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1380line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1381
1382It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1383process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1384prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1385is being unloaded by Python.
1386
1387I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1388make wxPython look bad.
1389
1390wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1391wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1392
1393Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1394
1395You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1396wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1397
1398Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1399code to show how to use it.
1400
1401Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1402matches MSW's.
1403
1404Added wxGrid.GetCells
1405
1406Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1407wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1408
1409Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1410wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1411
1412Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1413 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1414
1415Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1416objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1417a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1418
1419Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1420data transfer.
1421
1422Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1423
1424New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1425for unix systems.
1426
1427Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1428
1429SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1430in wx.cpp.
1431
1432
1433
1434
1435
1436What's new in 2.1b1
1437--------------------
1438Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1439item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1440wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1441
1442Added the Printing Framework.
1443
1444Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1445version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1446data after loading each extension module.
1447
1448Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1449wxWindows classes.
1450
1451Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1452symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1453when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1454
1455wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1456of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1457types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1458not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1459
1460
1461
1462What's new in 2.0b9
1463-------------------
1464Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1465
1466Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1467wxPython application.
1468
1469Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1470
1471Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1472associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1473this feature off.
1474
1475Added wxSafeYield function.
1476
1477OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1478
1479Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1480how it all works.
1481
1482The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1483DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1484
1485Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1486
1487Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1488wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1489
1490Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1491
1492Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1493methods.
1494
1495
1496
1497What's new in 2.0b8
1498-------------------
1499Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1500
1501Several missing methods from various classes.
1502
1503Various bug fixes.
1504
1505
1506
1507What's new in 2.0b7
1508-------------------
1509Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1510
1511Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.

1515What's new in 2.0b6
1516-------------------
1517Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1518Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.

1521What's new in 2.0b5
1522-------------------
1523Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1524reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1525wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1526wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1527with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1528
1529I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1530in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1531have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1532diverges from wxWindows.
1533
1534Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1535window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1536it should just work... More news on this later.
1537
1538Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1539
1540Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1541wxRegConfig class.
1542
1543As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1544

1546
1547What's new in 0.5.3
1548-------------------
1549Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1550
1551Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1552compatibility with the current wxWindows.

1558Changed the import semantics from ``"from wxPython import *"`` to
1559``"from wxPython.wx import *"`` This is for people who are worried about
6d75ea8f
RD
1560namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1561prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1562
1563Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1564
1565Made the events work for wxGrid.
1566
1567Added wxConfig.
1568
1569Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1570
1571Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1572objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1573
1574Other assorted fixes and additions.

1579What's new in 0.4.2
1580-------------------
1581
1582wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1583static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1584<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1585down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1586DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1587because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1588
1589The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1590must have been a different issue all along...

1594What's New in 0.4
1595-----------------
1596
15971. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1598Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1599linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1600extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1601And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1602version segfault shortly after starting up.
1603
16042. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1605
16063. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
