52.5.0.x
6-------
7
8Many, many little fixes, changes and additions done as part of the move
9to wxWindows 2.5 that I have forgotten about.
10
11Changed the import-startup-bootstrap process employed by wxPython such
12that wxWindows and the underlying gui toolkit are not initialized
13until the wxApp object is created (but before wxApp.OnInit is called.)
14This was required because of changes made to the C++ wxApp class.
15There are both benefits and potential problems with this change. The
16benefits are that you can import wxPython without requiring access to
17a GUI (for checking version numbers, etc.) and that in a
18multi-threaded environment the thread that creates the app object will
19now be the GUI thread instead of the one that imports wxPython. Some
20potential problems are that the C++ side of the "stock-objects"
21(wxBLUE_PEN, wxTheColourDatabase, etc.) are not initialized until the
22wxApp object is created, so you should not use them until then. Also,
23you will probably not be able to do any kind of GUI operation unless
24you have an app object first, (even on Windows where most anything was
25possible beofre.)
26
27Added wxMirrorDC.
28
29Added wxIconLocation
30
31wxPython's setup.py script now expects to use existing libraries for
32the contribs (gizmos, stc, xrc, etc.) rather than building local
33copies of them.

42Use wxSTC in the demo for displaying the soucre code of the samples.

45
46
47
482.4.1.2
49-------
50
51Added wxScrolledPanel from Will Sadkin
52
53Added SetShape method to top level windows (e.g. wxFrame.)
54
55Changed wxSWIG to not generate Python code using apply, (since it will
56be deprecated in the future) wxSWIG will use spam(*args, **kw) syntax
57instead. Also changed the generated __repr__ methods to be a bit more
58informative.
59
60Made the version number information more robust and uh, informative.
61Also added asserts to check that the major.minor versions of wxPython
62and wxWindows match.
63
64Added the new wx "renamer" package that will dynamically import from
65the wxPython package and rename wxFooBar --> FooBar. That means that
66people can do imports without "import *" and can use names like
67wx.Frame instead of wx.wxFrame. This is phase 1 of a full transition
68to the new namespace.
69
70Updated Scintilla to 1.52. I also changed it to use wxListCtrl
71instead of wxListBox for the AutoComplete window, added the ability to
72use custom bitmaps in the margin and in the AutoComplete windows, and
73worked out how to do proper clipping of child windows on wxGTK.
74
75Patrick O'Brien's PyCrust package has been renamed to Py and now
76includes several new tools. As part of the change the location of the
77pacakge has changed as well, it is now accessible as "from wxPython
78import py" (or "from wx import py" using the new namespace.) There
79are still some transition modules in the wxPython.lib.PyCrust package
80that will issue a warning and then import what is needed from the new
81package. These will be removed in a future release.
82
83Added __nonzero__ method to wxTreeItemId, wxBitmap, wxImage, wxFont,
84and most other classes that have an Ok or IsOK method. This allows
85code like "if obj: ..." to be the same as "if obj.IsOk(): ..."
86
87Toolbars on wxMac can now have controls on them.
88
89Added wxPython.lib.analogclock module based on samples that were
90passed back and forth on wxPython-users a while back.
91
92Added masked edit controls (wxPython.lib.maskededit) by Jeff Childers
93and Will Sadkin. Updated wxTimeCtrl to use MaskedEdit.
94
95When the __class__ of a dead object is replaced with _wxPyDeadObject
96the __del__ of the original class is now called first.
97
98Added wxTreeListCtrl. (Looks like a wxTreeCtrl embedded in a
99wxListCtrl, but actually is just giving multiple columns to a
100wxTreeCtrl.)
101
102Added wxFutureCall, a subclass of wxTimer that makes it easy to delay
103a call to any Python callable object.
104
105Added wxPy versions of wxPrintPreview, wxPreviewFrame, and
106wxPreviewControlBar so they can be derived from in Python and be able
107to override the C++ virtual methods.
108
109Simplified how the wxSizer methods are wrapped, changed the name of
110the "option" parameter to "proportion" to match the docs ("option" is
111still accepted for compatibility, but this will go away in a future
112release,) SetItemMinSize can now take a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter,
113and Spacers can be specified with a wxSize (or 2-tuple) parameter
114
115Added wxCursorFromBits.

119
120
1212.4.0.7
122-------
123Gave up on generating a warning upon the use of the old true/false or
124TRUE/FALSE values.
125
126Fixed wxGenericTreeCtrl (used on wxGTK and wxMac for wxTreeCtrl) so
127that it can successfully handle lots of nodes instead of overflowing
128when the virtual height of the widget overflowed a 16-bit value.
129
130Fixed the typemap that converts strings to wxColours to also accept
131unicode.
132
133Fixed problem where the wrong class name could sometimes be used for
134OOR.
135
136Fixed an interpreter lock problem in the __eq__ and __ne__ methods in
137wxSize and etc.
138
139Updated PyCrust to version 0.9
140
141Instead of always logging C++ assertions, added wxPYAPP_ASSERT_LOG
142flag to turn it on. In most cases turning it into an exception (the
143default behavior) is enough. See below in the 2.3.4.1 notes for more
144details.
145
146
147
148
1492.4.0.6 (a.k.a. the I'm so stupid release)
150-------
151The new deprecation class for the old true/false symbols can now be
152returned from OnInit. And I promise to be sure I am testing what I
153think I am testing in the future...
154
155
156
1572.4.0.5 (a.k.a. the blame it on Kevin release)
158-------
159A few little but annoying bug fixes.
160
161Updated pycolourchooser.
162
163Updated to 0.9b of PyCrust.
164
165
166
1672.4.0.4
168-------
169Added missing wxRect methods
170
171Add OOR support for wxApp objects too.
172
173Added wxCursorFromImage, which works on wxMSW and wxGTK so far.
174
175All platforms now send EVT_DESTROY_WINDOW. Be warned that at the time
176the event is sent the window is in the process of being deconstructed,
177and so calling some (most?) methods of the window itself may cause
178problems.
179
180Fixed SF Bug #689481, a method in the OGL wrappers was using the wrong
181return type.
182
183Fixed SF Bug #689958, an endless loop in printout.py.
184
185Added EVT_WINDOW_CREATE_ID and EVT_WINDOW_DESTROY_ID so these events
186can be associated with a specific window ID and more easily caught by
187the parent window.
188
189Fixed copy-paste error in wxListCtrl.GetFirstSelected.
190
191Added missing Init method (and an overloading wrapper) to wxLocale
192wrapper.
193
194Added a wxBitmap.SetMaskColour convenience method.
195
196Changed how the dynamic event tables (used for all Python wx classes,
197C++ wx classes typically use static event tables) are searched such
198that they behave from a Python perspective more like the static tables
199in C++. Namely that if there are identical event bindings in a base
200Python class and a derived Python class that the one in the derived
201class will be found first and that if Skip is called that the one in
202the base class will still be found instead of skipping directly to the
203static stable in the C++ class.
204
205Switched to using True/False in the wxPython lib and demo instead of
206true/false or TRUE/FALSE to prepare for the new boolean type and
207constants being added to Python. Added code to wx.py to test for the
208existence of the new constants and to create suitable values if not
209present.
210
211Added some static wxApp functions that help with integration with the
212Mac UI. They are no-ops on other platforms so it doesn't hurt to
213always call them. The functions are:
214
215 wxApp_GetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
216 wxApp_GetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
217 wxApp_GetMacAboutMenuItemId
218 wxApp_GetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
219 wxApp_GetMacExitMenuItemId
220 wxApp_GetMacHelpMenuTitleName
221 wxApp_SetMacDefaultEncodingIsPC
222 wxApp_SetMacSupportPCMenuShortcuts
223 wxApp_SetMacAboutMenuItemId
224 wxApp_SetMacPreferencesMenuItemId
225 wxApp_SetMacExitMenuItemId
226 wxApp_SetMacHelpMenuTitleName
227
228Refactored, enhanced and added capabilities for the DrawXXXList
229functions, inspired by code from Chris Barker.
230
231The wxWindows .mo language catalog files are now installed in a
232subdirectory of the wxPython package dir on MSW since that platform
233doesn't have a standard place for them.
234
235Added missing deselect methods for wxGrid.
236
237Fixed typemaps for wxGridCellCoordsArray.
238
239Updated to the 0.9a version of PyCrust
240
241
242
2432.4.0.2
244-------
245Several bug fixes.
246
247Added wxIntCtrl from Will Sadkin.
248
249Added wxPyColourChooser by Michael Gilfix.
250
251
252
253
2542.4.0.1
255-------
256No major new features since 2.3.4.2, mostly bug fixes and minor
257enhancements.
258
259Added function wrappers for the common dialogs from Kevin Altis. See
260wxPython/lib/dialogs.py for more details.
261
262
263
2642.3.4.2
265-------
266Various bug fixes.
267
268
269
2702.3.4.1
271-------
272Updated XRCed and wxTimeCtrl contribs.
273
274Show a couple new wxGrid features in the demo.
275
276Several bug fixes in wxWindows.
277
278Added wxHtmlFilter.
279
280wxASSERT and related C++ runtime diagnostics are now converted to
281Python exceptions. When an assert happens a wxPyAssertionError
282(which derives from AssertionError) exception is created and when
283control returns back to the Python code that invoked the C++ API it
284will be raised. The same exception restrictions are in place as
285before, namely that exceptions can't cross from one Python layer
286through C++ to another Python layer. That simply means that if you
287want to catch wxPyAssertionError or any other exception that you need
288to do it before control returns to C++ at the end of your event
289handler or callback code. There is some test code in demo/wxButton.py
290you can use to play with this new feature.
291
292Added some methods to wxApp (SetAssertMode and GetAssertMode) that let
293you control how C++ assertions are processed. Valid modes are:
294wxPYAPP_ASSERT_SUPPRESS, wxPYAPP_ASSERT_EXCEPTION, and
295wxPYAPP_ASSERT_DIALOG. Using _SUPPRESS will give you behavior like
296the old "final" builds and the assert will be ignored, _EXCEPTION is
297the new default described above, and _DIALOG is like the default in
2982.3.3.1 and prior "hybrid" builds. You can also combine _EXCEPTION
299and _DIALOG if you wish, although I don't know why you would.
300
301You can now overload OnInitGui, OnExit and OnAssert in your classes
302derived from wxApp.
303
304Added GetSelectedCells, GetSelectionBlockTopLeft,
305GetSelectionBlockBottomRight, GetSelectedRows, GetSelectedCols nethods
306to wxGrid.
307
308Added Python == and != operators for some basic classes
309
310Fixed the Python wrappers for wxInputStream so they no longer block
311when reading from a wxProcess on wxGTK. They now work more or less as
312they did before 2.3.3.1 but the dual meaning of eof() has been
313removed. There is now a CanRead() method that lets you know if there
314is data waiting to be read from the pipe.
315
316Fixed method name clash in wxIEHtmlWin, renamed Refresh to RefreshPage.
317
318Added Throbber from Cliff Wells to the library and the demo.
319
320Windows installer prompts to uninstall old version first.
321
322Added wxPython.lib.evtmgr by Robb Shecter, which is an easier, more
323"Pythonic" and more OO method of registering handlers for wxWindows
324events using the Publish/Subscribe pattern.
325
326Added wxPython.lib.popupctl by Gerrit van Dyk which is a combobox-like
327gizmo for poping up arbitrary controls. It is currently using
328wxDialog because of some issues with wxPopupWindow...
329
330Added wxPython.lib.gridmovers by Gerrit van Dyk which facilitates the
331dragging of columns and/or rows in a wxGrid.
332
333Added wxPython.lib.multisash by Gerrit van Dyk which is a nice
334implementation of allowing the user to split a window any number of
335times either horizontally or vertically, and to close the split off
336windows when desired.
337
338Added helpviewer tool that displays HTML books similarly to how MS
339HTMLHelp viewer does. Changed how the wxPythonDocs tarball is built
340and added a script to launch the doc viewer.
341
342
343
344
3452.3.3.1
346-------
b5a5d647
RD
347Added wxSplashScreen.
348
68320e40
RD
349Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
350
ce914f73 351Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 352
769a9cb2 353The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
bffe56c5
RD
354wxPopupWindow if available on the platform (and functioning correctly)
355so they can extend beyond the client area of the STC if needed.
769a9cb2 356
f74ff5ef
RD
357Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
358added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
359be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
360
afb810d9
RD
361Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
362data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
363convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 364
68bc8549
RD
365Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
366This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
367row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
368spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
369Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
370wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 371
18fc9fa3
RD
372Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
373
e9159fe8
RD
374Added wxBufferedDC.
375
a834585d 376Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45, and then again
f114b858 377to version 1.47, and one more time to 1.48! <wink>
1a2fb4cd 378
b96c7a38 379UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
380 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
381 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
382 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 383 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
384 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
385 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
386 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
387
388 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
389 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
390 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
391 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
392 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
393 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
394 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
395 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
396 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
397 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
398 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
399
400 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
401 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
402 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
403 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
404 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
405 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
406 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
407 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
408 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
409 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
410 method.
411
726fc00a 412Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 413
0e9b78ce
RD
414Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
415
68bc8549
RD
416Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
417
c8b34a16
RD
418A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
419whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
420to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
421crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
422pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
423Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
424a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
425for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 426
33ff77f6
RD
427Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
428wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 429derived classes.
33ff77f6 430
d55d6b3f
RD
431Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
432the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 433
94e36a51
RD
434Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
435application.
b5a5d647 436
3b867149
RD
437Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
438wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
439methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
440supported are:
441
442 DoMoveWindow
443 DoSetSize
444 DoSetClientSize
445 DoSetVirtualSize
446 DoGetSize
447 DoGetClientSize
448 DoGetPosition
449 DoGetVirtualSize
450 DoGetBestSize
451 InitDialog
452 TransferDataFromWindow
453 TransferDataToWindow
454 Validate
455 AcceptsFocus
456 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
457 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
458 AddChild
459 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 460
3b867149
RD
461 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
462 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
463
464Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
465DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
466
a66212dc
RD
467Added wxArtProvider.
468
469Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
470(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
471are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
472something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
473implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
474
475Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
476
f9b24f07
RD
477Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
478creating a ScrolledPanel.
479
3eb221f6
RD
480Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
481other menu stuff.
c731eb47 482
3eb221f6
RD
483Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
484ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 485C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 486so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 487
763d71e4
RD
488Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
489modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
490transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
491tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 492win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
763d71e4 493
5fea3204
RD
494Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
495so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
496respond to mouse events and etc.
497
d6a3401d
RD
498Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
499on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
500
f6f98ecc 501Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c 502import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
a6151d99
RD
503tools in your own scripts or apps as needed. On Linux and OS X the
504tool scripts are installed to {prefix}/bin so you should be able to
505easily launch them from the command line. For example, PyCrust can be
506started with just the "pycrust" command.
bd4b9c8c 507
3b867149
RD
508Added a sample to the demo that catches various key events and
509displays the details of the event.
510
af83019e
RD
511Added wxWizard, wxWizardPage, wxWizardPageSimple and wxPyWizardPage.
512
628c7f79
RD
513Added wxXmlResourceHandler which allows you to create custom handlers
514for nonstandard class types in XRC resources. See the demo for an
515example.
516
1e4a197e
RD
517Added wxPython.lib.mixins.rubberband module from Robb Shecter.
518
519Added wxTimeCtrl from Will Sadkin.

551Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the

RD
552default C++ constructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
553corresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
09f3d4e6
RD
554creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
555as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
556passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
557resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
558the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
559etc.

703Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
704convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
705converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
706containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
707included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
708specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
709compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
710convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
711wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
712the implementation.

735 GetGridRowLabelWindow
736 GetGridColLabelWindow
737 GetGridCornerLabelWindow

740representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
741On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
742
743
744***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
745 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
746 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
747 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
748 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
749 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
750 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
751 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
752 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
753 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
754 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
755 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
756 use weak references.)
757
758 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
759 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
760 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
761 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
762 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
763 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
764 object-type related oddities to me.
765***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---

767There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
768in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython

770finally got done.
9416aa89
RD

861New in 2.2.2
862------------
863
864Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
865Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
866from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
867that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
868releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
869have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
870interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
871some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
872how things work.
873
874I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
875of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
876This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
877builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
878use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
879platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
880wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
881install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
882using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
883
884Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
885contributed by Joerg Baumann.
886
887Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
888get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
889get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
890stdin.
891
892Removed the old python sizers.
893
894Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
895and wxRealPoint.
896
897Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
898the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
899libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
900
901Lots of little fixes here and there.
902
903Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the

949WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
950Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
951handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
952confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
953coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
954generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
955the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
956modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.

991Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
992available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
993new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
994consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
995good...)
996
997Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
998authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
999mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
1000
1001Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
1002It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
1003in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
1004on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
1005needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
1006just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
1007method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
1008matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
1009them.
1010
1011Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
1012expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
1013defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
1014"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
1015
1016I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
1017wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
1018wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
1019but I've included a very readable source file in the
1020wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
1021can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
1022http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
1023until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
1024provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

RD
1031Skipped a version number to match what has been released for wxGTK.
1032
6d75ea8f
RD
1033Updated wxMVCTree and added a demo for it, also fixed layout on GTK
1034and some flicker problems.
1035
1036Added a wrapper class for the Visualization ToolKit (or VTK) in the
1037wxPython.lib.vtk module. (http://www.kitware.com/)
1038
1039Fixed wxTreeCtrl.SetItemImage and GetItemImage to recognise the new
1040"which" parameter.
1041
1042Added wxPython.lib.spashscreen from Mike Fletcher.
1043
1044Added wxPython.lib.filebrowsebutton also from Mike Fletcher.
1045
1046Renamed wxTreeCtrl.GetParent to GetItemParent to avoid a name clash
1047with wxWindow.GetParent.
1048
1049Added wxIntersectRect to compute the intersection of two wxRect's.
1050It is used like this:
1051
1052 intersect = wxIntersectRect(rect1, rect2)
1053
1054If r1 and r2 don't intersect then None is returned, otherwise the
1055rectangle representing the intersection is returned.
1056
1057Some bug fixes for Clipboard and Drag-n-Drop.
1058
9b3d3bc4 1059Rotated text!!! WooHoo! (See wxDC.DrawRotatedText())

RD
1060
1061Added a set of Generic Buttons to the library. These are simple
1062window classes that look and act like native buttons, but you can have
1063a bit more control over them. The bezel width can be set in addition
1064to colours, fonts, etc. There is a ToggleButton as well as Bitmap
9e57c2a0
RD
1065versions too. They should also serve as a good example of how to
1066create your own classes derived from wxControl.

RD
1068The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
1069wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
1070but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
1071support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
1072methods look like this:
1073
1074 def AddTool(ID,
1075 bitmap,
1076 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
1077 toggle = FALSE,
1078 clientData = NULL,
1079 shortHelpString = "",
1080 longHelpString = "")
1081
1082 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
1083 bitmap,
1084 shortHelpString = "",
1085 longHelpString = "",
1086 toggle=FALSE)
1087
1088
1e4a197e 1089There are also corresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
9b3d3bc4
RD
1090that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.
1091
9e57c2a0 1092Added a wrapper for the new PCX and TIFF ImageHandlers.

1093
1094wxRect now simulates attributes named left, right, top and bottom.

1096Removed all non wx stuff from the glcanvas module since DA's PyOpenGL
1097is better and compatible with the wxGLCanvas. You can get it at

1107More fixes for the wxFloatBar, and it now works on wxGTK even better

1114What's new in 2.1.11
1115--------------------
1116Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
1117syncronized.
1118
1119wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
1120wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
1121itself.
1122
1123Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
1124being added. This should remove the need for our
1125wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
1126
1127wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
1128no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
1129probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
1130a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
1131an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
1132
1133Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
1134
1135Added new HTML printing classes.
1136
1137Added wxWindow.GetHandle
1138
1139Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
1140it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
1141(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
1142wxPoint.)
1143
1144Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
1145processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
1146thread from other threads.
1147
1148Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
1149
1150Added wxFontEnumerator.
1151
1152Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
1153
1154wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
1155Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
1156
1157Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
1158
1159Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on
1160wxGTK...
1161
1162Added an MVC tree control from Bryn Keller to the library.
1163
1164
1165
1166
1167What's new in 2.1.5
1168-------------------
1169This is a quick bug-fix release to take care of a few nasties that
1170crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
1171major features.
1172
1173
1174
1175What's new in 2.1.4
1176--------------------
1177
1178This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
1179wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
1180binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
1181wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
1182To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
1183the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
1184
1185Now back to what's new...
1186
1187Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
1188
1189Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
1190
1191Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
1192of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
1193anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
1194list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
1195memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
1196great!
1197
1198Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
1199SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
1200default sort order.
1201
1202Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
1203either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
1204example, the following are equivallent:
1205
1206 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
1207 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
1208
1209Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
1210handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
1211is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
1212understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
1213pages. See the demo for an example.
1214
1215A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
1216wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
1217
1218Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
1219
1220Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
1221versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
1222warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
1223disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
1224the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
1225added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
1226smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
1227that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
1228not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
1229wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
1230portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
1231further details.
1232
1233Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
1234wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
1235accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
1236directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
1237that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
1238Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
1239for more info and examples in future releases.
1240
1241Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
1242from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
1243wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
1244all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
1245different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
1246columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
1247to use them.
1248
1249Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
1250that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
1251the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
1252method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
1253in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
1254of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
1255in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
1256there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
1257enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
1258be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
1259pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
1260
1261I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
1262years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
1263object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
1264value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
1265sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
1266them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
1267default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
1268creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
1269to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
1270back again the next time something is written. (You can call
1271app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
1272redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
1273object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
1274class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
1275RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
1276wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
1277
1278 class MyApp(wxApp):
1279 outputWindowClass = MyClass
1280
1281 def OnInit(self):
1282 frame = MyFrame()
1283 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
1284 return true
1285
1286Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
1287wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
1288your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
1289to really screw things up.
1290
1291Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
1292in the wxWindows docs...
1293
1294Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
1295shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
1296shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
1297that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
1298frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
1299bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
1300a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
1301problems...)
1302
1303
1304
1305
1306What's new in 2.1b3
1307--------------------
1308
1309This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
1310
1311Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
1312for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
1313patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
1314old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
1315features:
1316
1317 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
1318 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
1319 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
1320
1321 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
1322
1323 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
1324 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
1325 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
1326 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
1327
1328
1329There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
1330raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
1331Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
1332see distrib/build.py for more details.
1333
1334wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
1335two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
1336takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
1337interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
1338
1339
1340
1341
1342
1343What's new in 2.1b2
1344--------------------
1345
1346Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
1347
1348Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
1349provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
1350their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
1351It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1352line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1353
1354It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1355process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1356prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1357is being unloaded by Python.
1358
1359I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1360make wxPython look bad.
1361
1362wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1363wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1364
1365Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1366
1367You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1368wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1369
1370Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1371code to show how to use it.
1372
1373Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1374matches MSW's.
1375
1376Added wxGrid.GetCells
1377
1378Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1379wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1380
1381Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1382wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1383
1384Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1385 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1386
1387Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1388objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1389a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1390
1391Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1392data transfer.
1393
1394Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1395
1396New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1397for unix systems.
1398
1399Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1400
1401SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1402in wx.cpp.
1403
1404
1405
1406
1407
1408What's new in 2.1b1
1409--------------------
1410Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1411item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1412wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1413
1414Added the Printing Framework.
1415
1416Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1417version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1418data after loading each extension module.
1419
1420Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1421wxWindows classes.
1422
1423Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1424symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1425when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1426
1427wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1428of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1429types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1430not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1431
1432
1433
1434What's new in 2.0b9
1435-------------------
1436Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1437
1438Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1439wxPython application.
1440
1441Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1442
1443Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1444associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1445this feature off.
1446
1447Added wxSafeYield function.
1448
1449OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1450
1451Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1452how it all works.
1453
1454The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1455DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1456
1457Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1458
1459Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1460wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1461
1462Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1463
1464Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1465methods.
1466
1467
1468
1469What's new in 2.0b8
1470-------------------
1471Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1472
1473Several missing methods from various classes.
1474
1475Various bug fixes.
1476
1477
1478
1479What's new in 2.0b7
1480-------------------
1481Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1482
1483Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1484
1485
1486
1487What's new in 2.0b6
1488-------------------
1489Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1490Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1491
1492
1493What's new in 2.0b5
1494-------------------
1495Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1496reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1497wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1498wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1499with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1500
1501I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1502in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1503have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1504diverges from wxWindows.
1505
1506Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1507window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1508it should just work... More news on this later.
1509
1510Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1511
1512Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1513wxRegConfig class.
1514
1515As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1516
1517
1518
1519What's new in 0.5.3
1520-------------------
1521Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1522
1523Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1524compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1525
1526
1527
1528What's new in 0.5.0
1529-------------------
1530Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1531wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1532namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1533prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1534
1535Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.

1551What's new in 0.4.2
1552-------------------
1553
1554wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1555static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1556<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1557down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1558DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1559because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1560
1561The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1562must have been a different issue all along...

1566What's New in 0.4
1567-----------------
1568
15691. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1570Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1571linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1572extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1573And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1574version segfault shortly after starting up.
1575
15762. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1577
15783. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
