RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35
1a2fb4cd
RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
3b867149
RD
96Added wxPyWindow, wxPyPanel and wxPyControl which are just like their
97wx counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
b0e5c039
RD
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
3b867149
RD
117 AddChild
118 RemoveChild
b0e5c039 119
3b867149
RD
120 If there are other methods that you think should be supported
121 please let me know.
b0e5c039
RD
122
123Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
124DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
125
a66212dc
RD
126Added wxArtProvider.
127
128Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
129(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
130are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
131something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
132implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
133
134Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
135
f9b24f07
RD
136Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
137creating a ScrolledPanel.
138
3eb221f6
RD
139Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
140other menu stuff.
c731eb47 141
3eb221f6
RD
142Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
143ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
bd4b9c8c 144C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32all and
3eb221f6 145so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 146
763d71e4
RD
147Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
148modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
149transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
150tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
af83019e 151win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
763d71e4 152
5fea3204
RD
153Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
154so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
155respond to mouse events and etc.
156
d6a3401d
RD
157Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
158on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
159
f6f98ecc 160Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
bd4b9c8c
RD
161import and launch each tool. This will let you import and use the
162tools in your own scripts or apps as needed.
163
3b867149
RD
164Added a sample to the demo that catches various key events and
165displays the details of the event.
166
af83019e
RD
167Added wxWizard, wxWizardPage, wxWizardPageSimple and wxPyWizardPage.
168
628c7f79
RD
169Added wxXmlResourceHandler which allows you to create custom handlers
170for nonstandard class types in XRC resources. See the demo for an
171example.
172
763d71e4 173
3bd1e033 174
b8510c2f 175
4268f798 1762.3.2.1
71f1334b 177-------
4268f798
RD
178Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
179well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
180without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
181
182Added some patches from library contributors.
183
184
185
ebf4302c 1862.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
187-----
188Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
189EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
190wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
191and a demo to show them in action.
192
fea018f8
RD
193Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
194http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 195
c7e7022c 196Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 197
00b6c4e3 198Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 199
09f3d4e6
RD
200Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
201Rolinsky.
202
203Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 204default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
205coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
206creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
207as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
208passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
209resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
210the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
211etc.
212
fe0aca37 213Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
214accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
215from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
216means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
217are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
218wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 219
6d19860f
RD
220Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
221column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
222using wxColumnSorterMixin.
223
53fe40ba 224Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 225
6d8b4f8d 226Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 227
431f4c16 228Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 229
19a97bd6
RD
230Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
231are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
232multi-processor machine.
233
76bfdc78
RD
234Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
235messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
236
0122b7e3
RD
237Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
238
71f1334b
RD
239The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
240wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
241that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
242created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
243exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
244original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 245
9d37f964
RD
246Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
247DrawPointList.
248
79f1bf32
RD
249Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
250
729f4276
RD
251Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
252text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 253
71f1334b 254Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
255and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
256of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
257browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
258if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
259wx-dev list.
260
261Added wxStopWatch.
262
263Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
264
c0c84fa0
RD
265Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
266will now Disconnect the event.
267
268Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
269
7dbce44a
RD
270Added wxFileHistory.
271
71f1334b 272Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 273by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 274this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
275same document.
276
611dc22c
RD
277Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
278
78e8819c
RD
279Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
280Feuer.
281
282Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
283were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
284additional columns for each item. The classes are
285wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
286wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
287also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 288
4a61305d
RD
289Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
290from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
291wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
292visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
293SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
294wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
295details.
296
b37c7e1d 297
fea018f8
RD
298
299
286e2db6 3002.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
301-----
302Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
303code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
304on a custom event handler for example.)
305
d56cebe7
RD
306Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
307GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
308
309Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
310subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
311
312Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
313
314Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
315
286e2db6
RD
316Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
317
318Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
319
bf7945ce 320
9416aa89
RD
321
3222.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
323-----
324Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 325glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
326
327Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
328wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
329ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
330
331Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
332
1af9e5c5 333Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
334wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
335colour database.
336
6e18ca6c
RD
337Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
338wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
339access from non-GUI threads.
340
1af9e5c5
RD
341wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
342use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 343
6bb38ab6
RD
344Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
345
6bb38ab6
RD
346Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
347that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
348
49875c53
RD
349Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
350wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
351
e0672e2f
RD
352Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
353it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 354
1af9e5c5
RD
355Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
356convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
357converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
358containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
359included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
360specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
361compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
362convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
363wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
364the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
365
366Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
367experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
368many refreshes.
369
d1679124
RD
370A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
371the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 372
d7ec6564 373Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 374
d7ec6564 375Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 376
3b36695d
RD
377Added wxToggleButton.
378
379Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 380
9416aa89
RD
381Added some methods to wxGrid:
382 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
383 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
384 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
385 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
386 GetGridWindow
387 GetGridRowLabelWindow
388 GetGridColLabelWindow
389 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
390
391Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
392representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
393On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
394
395
396***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
397 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
398 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
399 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
400 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
401 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
402 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
403 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
404 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
405 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
406 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
407 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
408 use weak references.)
409
410 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
411 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
412 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
413 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
414 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
415 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
416 object-type related oddities to me.
417***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
418
419There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
420in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
421specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
422finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
423
424Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
425list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 426
10e07c70 427Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 428
493f1553
RD
429Added wxWave.
430
30aaddfe
RD
431Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
432useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
433make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
434Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
435of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
436please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
437
25832b3f
RD
438Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
439by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
440wxPython/samples.

456New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
457that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
458a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
459it to a wxString using the default encoding.
460
461Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
462
463Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
464
465Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 466a matching prefix as keys are typed.

467
468Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
469column in report mode.
470
471Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
472bar after 2 seconds.
473
474Added wxJoystick.
475
476Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
477a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
478object, (usually a window.)

484Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into

486the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
487the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared

489wxPython/src/export.h
490
491Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
492extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
493utils. Will probably add more later.

495Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
496wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
497wxPrinterDC2 name.
498
499Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
500that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
501
502Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
503
504Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
505mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
506
507Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
508integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
509XML-RPC server.

513New in 2.2.2
514------------
515
516Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
517Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
518from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
519that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
520releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
521have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
522interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
523some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
524how things work.
525
526I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
527of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
528This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
529builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
530use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
531platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
532wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
533install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
534using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
535
536Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
537contributed by Joerg Baumann.
538
539Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
540get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
541get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
542stdin.
543
544Removed the old python sizers.
545
546Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
547and wxRealPoint.
548
549Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
550the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
551libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
552
553Lots of little fixes here and there.
554
555Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
556wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
557wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

601WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
602Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
603handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
604confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
605coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
606generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
607the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
608modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.

643Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
644available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
645new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
646consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
647good...)
648
649Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
650authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
651mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
652
653Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
654It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
655in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
656on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
657needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
658just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
659method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
660matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
661them.
662
663Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
664expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
665defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
666"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
667
668I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
669wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
670wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
671but I've included a very readable source file in the
672wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
673can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
674http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
675until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
676provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

720The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
721wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
722but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
723support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
724methods look like this:
725
726 def AddTool(ID,
727 bitmap,
728 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
729 toggle = FALSE,
730 clientData = NULL,
731 shortHelpString = "",

733
734 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
735 bitmap,
736 shortHelpString = "",
737 longHelpString = "",
738 toggle=FALSE)
739
740
741There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
742that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.

766What's new in 2.1.11
767--------------------
768Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
769syncronized.
770
771wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
772wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
773itself.
774
775Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
776being added. This should remove the need for our
777wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
778
779wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
780no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
781probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
782a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
783an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
784
785Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
786
787Added new HTML printing classes.
788
789Added wxWindow.GetHandle
790
791Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
792it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
793(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
794wxPoint.)
795
796Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
797processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
798thread from other threads.
799
800Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
801
802Added wxFontEnumerator.
803
804Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
805
806wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
807Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
808
809Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
810

819What's new in 2.1.5
820-------------------

823major features.
824
825
826
827What's new in 2.1.4
828--------------------
829
830This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
831wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
832binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
833wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
834To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
835the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
836
837Now back to what's new...
838
839Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
840
841Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
842
843Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
844of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
845anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
846list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
847memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
848great!
849
850Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
851SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
852default sort order.
853
854Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
855either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
856example, the following are equivallent:
857
858 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
859 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
860
861Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
862handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
863is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
864understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
865pages. See the demo for an example.
866
867A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
868wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
869
870Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
871
872Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
873versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
874warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
875disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
876the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
877added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
878smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
879that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
880not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
881wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
882portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
883further details.
884
885Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
886wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
887accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
888directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
889that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
890Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
891for more info and examples in future releases.
892
893Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
894from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
895wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
896all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
897different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
898columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
899to use them.
900
901Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
902that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
903the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
904method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
905in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
906of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
907in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
908there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
909enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
910be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
911pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
912
913I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
914years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
915object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
916value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
917sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
918them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
919default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
920creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
921to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
922back again the next time something is written. (You can call
923app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
924redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
925object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
926class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
927RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
928wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
929
930 class MyApp(wxApp):
931 outputWindowClass = MyClass
932
933 def OnInit(self):
934 frame = MyFrame()
935 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
936 return true
937
938Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
939wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
940your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
941to really screw things up.
942
943Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
944in the wxWindows docs...
945
946Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
947shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
948shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
949that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
950frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
951bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
952a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
953problems...)

956
957
958What's new in 2.1b3
959--------------------
960
961This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
962
963Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
964for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
965patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
966old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
967features:
968
969 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
970 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
971 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
972
973 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
974
975 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
976 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
977 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
978 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
979
980
981There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
982raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
983Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
984see distrib/build.py for more details.
985
986wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
987two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
988takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
989interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.

995What's new in 2.1b2
996--------------------
997
998Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
999
1000Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
1001provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
1002their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
1003It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
1004line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
1005
1006It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
1007process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
1008prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
1009is being unloaded by Python.
1010
1011I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
1012make wxPython look bad.
1013
1014wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1015wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1016
1017Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1018
1019You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1020wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1021
1022Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1023code to show how to use it.
1024
1025Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1026matches MSW's.
1027
1028Added wxGrid.GetCells
1029
1030Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1031wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1032
1033Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1034wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1035
1036Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1037 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1038
1039Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1040objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1041a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1042
1043Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1044data transfer.
1045
1046Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1047
1048New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1049for unix systems.
1050
1051Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1052
1053SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1054in wx.cpp.
1055
1056
1057
1058
1059
1060What's new in 2.1b1
1061--------------------
1062Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1063item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1064wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1065
1066Added the Printing Framework.
1067
1068Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1069version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1070data after loading each extension module.
1071
1072Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1073wxWindows classes.
1074
1075Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1076symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1077when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1078
1079wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1080of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1081types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1082not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1083
1084
1085
1086What's new in 2.0b9
1087-------------------
1088Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1089
1090Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1091wxPython application.
1092
1093Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1094
1095Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1096associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1097this feature off.
1098
1099Added wxSafeYield function.
1100
1101OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1102
1103Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1104how it all works.
1105
1106The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1107DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1108
1109Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1110
1111Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1112wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1113
1114Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1115
1116Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1117methods.
1118
1119
1120
1121What's new in 2.0b8
1122-------------------
1123Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1124
1125Several missing methods from various classes.
1126
1127Various bug fixes.
1128
1129
1130
1131What's new in 2.0b7
1132-------------------
1133Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1134
1135Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1136
1137
1138
1139What's new in 2.0b6
1140-------------------
1141Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1142Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1143
1144
1145What's new in 2.0b5
1146-------------------
1147Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1148reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1149wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1150wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1151with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1152
1153I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1154in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1155have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1156diverges from wxWindows.
1157
1158Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1159window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1160it should just work... More news on this later.
1161
1162Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1163
1164Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1165wxRegConfig class.
1166
1167As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1168
1169
1170
1171What's new in 0.5.3
1172-------------------
1173Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1174
1175Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1176compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1177
1178
1179
1180What's new in 0.5.0
1181-------------------
1182Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1183wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1184namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1185prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1186
1187Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1188
1189Made the events work for wxGrid.
1190
1191Added wxConfig.
1192
1193Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1194
1195Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1196objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1197
1198Other assorted fixes and additions.
1199
1200
1201
1202
1203What's new in 0.4.2
1204-------------------
1205
1206wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1207static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1208<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1209down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1210DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1211because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1212
1213The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1214must have been a different issue all along...
1215
1216
1217
1218What's New in 0.4
1219-----------------
1220
12211. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1222Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1223linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1224extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1225And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1226version segfault shortly after starting up.
1227
12282. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1229
12303. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1231
1232----------------------------------------------------------------------
