RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35
1a2fb4cd
RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
b0e5c039
RD
96Added wxPyWindow and wxPyControl which are just like their wx
97counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
117
118 If there are other methods that should be supported please let me
119 know.
120
121Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
122DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
123
a66212dc
RD
124Added wxArtProvider.
125
126Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
127(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
128are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
129something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
130implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
131
132Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
133
f9b24f07
RD
134Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
135creating a ScrolledPanel.
136
3eb221f6
RD
137Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
138other menu stuff.
c731eb47 139
3eb221f6
RD
140Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
141ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
142C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32 all and
143so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 144
763d71e4
RD
145Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
146modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
147transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
148tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
149win32com gots rid of the tstate...
150
151
3bd1e033 152
b8510c2f 153
4268f798 1542.3.2.1
71f1334b 155-------
4268f798
RD
156Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
157well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
158without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
159
160Added some patches from library contributors.
161
162
163
ebf4302c 1642.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
165-----
166Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
167EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
168wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
169and a demo to show them in action.
170
fea018f8
RD
171Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
172http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 173
c7e7022c 174Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 175
00b6c4e3 176Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 177
09f3d4e6
RD
178Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
179Rolinsky.
180
181Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 182default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
183coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
184creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
185as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
186passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
187resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
188the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
189etc.
190
fe0aca37 191Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
192accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
193from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
194means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
195are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
196wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 197
6d19860f
RD
198Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
199column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
200using wxColumnSorterMixin.
201
53fe40ba 202Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 203
6d8b4f8d 204Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 205
431f4c16 206Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 207
19a97bd6
RD
208Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
209are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
210multi-processor machine.
211
76bfdc78
RD
212Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
213messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
214
0122b7e3
RD
215Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
216
71f1334b
RD
217The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
218wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
219that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
220created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
221exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
222original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 223
9d37f964
RD
224Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
225DrawPointList.
226
79f1bf32
RD
227Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
228
729f4276
RD
229Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
230text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 231
71f1334b 232Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
233and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
234of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
235browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
236if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
237wx-dev list.
238
239Added wxStopWatch.
240
241Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
242
c0c84fa0
RD
243Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
244will now Disconnect the event.
245
246Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
247
7dbce44a
RD
248Added wxFileHistory.
249
71f1334b 250Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 251by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 252this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
253same document.
254
611dc22c
RD
255Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
256
78e8819c
RD
257Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
258Feuer.
259
260Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
261were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
262additional columns for each item. The classes are
263wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
264wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
265also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 266
4a61305d
RD
267Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
268from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
269wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
270visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
271SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
272wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
273details.
274
b37c7e1d 275
fea018f8
RD
276
277
286e2db6 2782.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
279-----
280Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
281code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
282on a custom event handler for example.)
283
d56cebe7
RD
284Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
285GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
286
287Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
288subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
289
290Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
291
292Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
293
286e2db6
RD
294Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
295
296Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
297
bf7945ce 298
9416aa89
RD
299
3002.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
301-----
302Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 303glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
304
305Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
306wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
307ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
308
309Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
310
1af9e5c5 311Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
312wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
313colour database.
314
6e18ca6c
RD
315Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
316wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
317access from non-GUI threads.
318
1af9e5c5
RD
319wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
320use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 321
6bb38ab6
RD
322Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
323
6bb38ab6
RD
324Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
325that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
326
49875c53
RD
327Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
328wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
329
e0672e2f
RD
330Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
331it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 332
1af9e5c5
RD
333Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
334convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
335converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
336containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
337included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
338specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
339compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
340convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
341wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
342the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
343
344Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
345experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
346many refreshes.
347
d1679124
RD
348A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
349the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 350
d7ec6564 351Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 352
d7ec6564 353Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 354
3b36695d
RD
355Added wxToggleButton.
356
357Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 358
9416aa89
RD
359Added some methods to wxGrid:
360 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
361 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
362 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
363 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
364 GetGridWindow
365 GetGridRowLabelWindow
366 GetGridColLabelWindow
367 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
368
369Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
370representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
371On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
372
373
374***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
375 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
376 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
377 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
378 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
379 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
380 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
381 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
382 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
383 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
384 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
385 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
386 use weak references.)
387
388 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
389 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
390 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
391 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
392 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
393 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
394 object-type related oddities to me.
395***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
396
397There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
398in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
399specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
400finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
401
402Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
403list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 404
10e07c70 405Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 406
493f1553
RD
407Added wxWave.
408
30aaddfe
RD
409Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
410useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
411make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
412Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
413of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
414please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
415
25832b3f
RD
416Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
417by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
418wxPython/samples.
419
493f1553 420
19cf4f80
RD
421
422
b075a3bb
RD
4232.2.6
424-----
425
426No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
427changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
428
1b62f00d 429
19cf4f80 430
1b62f00d 4312.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
432-----
433
434New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
435that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
436a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
437it to a wxString using the default encoding.
438
439Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
440
441Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
442
443Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 444a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
445
446Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
447column in report mode.
448
449Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
450bar after 2 seconds.
451
452Added wxJoystick.
453
454Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
455a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
456object, (usually a window.)
457
458Added wxNotifyEvent.Allow()
459
de20db99
RD
460Fixed GOBS of reference leaks.
461
1e7ecb7b
RD
462Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into
463multiple extension modules again. A Python CObject is used to allow
1b62f00d

473Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a

477Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
478that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.

481
482Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
483mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
484
485Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
486integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
487XML-RPC server.

491New in 2.2.2
492------------
493
494Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
495Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
496from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
497that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
498releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
499have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
500interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
501some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
502how things work.
503
504I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
505of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
506This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
507builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
508use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
509platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
510wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
511install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
512using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
513
514Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
515contributed by Joerg Baumann.
516
517Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
518get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
519get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
520stdin.
521
522Removed the old python sizers.
523
524Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
525and wxRealPoint.
526
527Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
528the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
529libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
530
531Lots of little fixes here and there.
532
533Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
534wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
535wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

579WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
580Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
581handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
582confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
583coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
584generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
585the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

621Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
622available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
623new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
624consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
625good...)
626
627Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
628authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
629mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
630
631Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
632It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
633in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
634on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
635needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
636just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
637method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
638matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
639them.
640
641Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
642expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
643defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
644"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
645
646I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
647wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
648wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
649but I've included a very readable source file in the
650wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
651can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
652http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
653until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool

698The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython

700but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
701support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
702methods look like this:
703
704 def AddTool(ID,

707 toggle = FALSE,
708 clientData = NULL,

713 bitmap,
714 shortHelpString = "",
715 longHelpString = "",

717
718
719There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods

744What's new in 2.1.11
745--------------------
746Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
747syncronized.
748
749wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
750wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
751itself.
752
753Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
754being added. This should remove the need for our
755wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
756
757wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
758no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
759probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
760a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
761an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
762
763Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
764
765Added new HTML printing classes.
766
767Added wxWindow.GetHandle
768
769Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
770it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
771(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
772wxPoint.)
773
774Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
775processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
776thread from other threads.
777
778Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
779
780Added wxFontEnumerator.

784wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual

788

801major features.
802
803
804
805What's new in 2.1.4
806--------------------
807
808This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
809wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
810binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
811wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
812To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
813the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
814
815Now back to what's new...
816
817Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
818
819Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
820
821Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
822of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
823anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
824list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
825memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
826great!
827
828Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
829SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
830default sort order.
831
832Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
833either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
834example, the following are equivallent:
835
836 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
837 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
838
839Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
840handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
841is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
842understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
843pages. See the demo for an example.
844
845A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
846wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
847
848Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
849
850Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
851versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
852warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
853disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
854the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
855added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
856smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
857that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
858not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
859wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
860portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
861further details.
862
863Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
864wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
865accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
866directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
867that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
868Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
869for more info and examples in future releases.
870
871Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
872from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
873wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
874all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
875different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
876columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
877to use them.
878
879Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
880that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
881the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
882method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
883in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
884of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
885in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
886there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
887enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
888be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
889pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
890
891I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
892years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
893object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
894value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
895sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
896them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
897default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
898creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
899to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
900back again the next time something is written. (You can call
901app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
902redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
903object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
904class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
905RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
906wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
907
908 class MyApp(wxApp):
909 outputWindowClass = MyClass
910
911 def OnInit(self):
912 frame = MyFrame()
913 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
914 return true
915
916Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
917wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
918your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
919to really screw things up.
920
921Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
922in the wxWindows docs...
923
924Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
925shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
926shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
927that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
928frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
929bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
930a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
931problems...)
932
933
934
935
936What's new in 2.1b3
937--------------------
938
939This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
940
941Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
942for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
943patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
944old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
945features:
946
947 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
948 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
949 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
950
951 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
952
953 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
954 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
955 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
956 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
957
958
959There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
960raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
961Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
962see distrib/build.py for more details.
963
964wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
965two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
966takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
967interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
968
969
970
971
972
973What's new in 2.1b2
974--------------------
975
976Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
977
978Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
979provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
980their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
981It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
982line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
983
984It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
985process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
986prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
987is being unloaded by Python.
988
989I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
990make wxPython look bad.
991
992wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
993wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
994
995Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
996
997You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
998wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
999
1000Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1001code to show how to use it.
1002
1003Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1004matches MSW's.
1005
1006Added wxGrid.GetCells
1007
1008Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1009wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1010
1011Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1012wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1013
1014Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1015 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1016
1017Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1018objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1019a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1020
1021Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1022data transfer.
1023
1024Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1025
1026New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1027for unix systems.
1028
1029Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1030
1031SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1032in wx.cpp.
1033
1034
1035
1036
1037
1038What's new in 2.1b1
1039--------------------
1040Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1041item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1042wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1043
1044Added the Printing Framework.
1045
1046Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1047version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1048data after loading each extension module.
1049
1050Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1051wxWindows classes.
1052
1053Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1054symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1055when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1056
1057wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1058of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1059types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1060not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1061
1062
1063
1064What's new in 2.0b9
1065-------------------
1066Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1067
1068Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1069wxPython application.
1070
1071Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1072
1073Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1074associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1075this feature off.
1076
1077Added wxSafeYield function.
1078
1079OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1080
1081Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1082how it all works.
1083
1084The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1085DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1086
1087Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1088
1089Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1090wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1091
1092Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1093
1094Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1095methods.
1096
1097
1098
1099What's new in 2.0b8
1100-------------------
1101Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1102
1103Several missing methods from various classes.
1104
1105Various bug fixes.
1106
1107
1108
1109What's new in 2.0b7
1110-------------------
1111Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1112
1113Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1114
1115
1116
1117What's new in 2.0b6
1118-------------------
1119Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1120Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1121
1122
1123What's new in 2.0b5
1124-------------------
1125Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1126reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1127wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1128wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1129with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1130
1131I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1132in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1133have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1134diverges from wxWindows.
1135
1136Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1137window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1138it should just work... More news on this later.
1139
1140Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1141
1142Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1143wxRegConfig class.
1144
1145As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1146
1147
1148
1149What's new in 0.5.3
1150-------------------
1151Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1152
1153Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1154compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1155
1156
1157
1158What's new in 0.5.0
1159-------------------
1160Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1161wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1162namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1163prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1164
1165Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1166
1167Made the events work for wxGrid.
1168
1169Added wxConfig.
1170
1171Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1172
1173Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1174objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1175
1176Other assorted fixes and additions.
1177
1178
1179
1180
1181What's new in 0.4.2
1182-------------------
1183
1184wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1185static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1186<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1187down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1188DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1189because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1190
1191The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1192must have been a different issue all along...
1193
1194
1195
1196What's New in 0.4
1197-----------------
1198
11991. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1200Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1201linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1202extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1203And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1204version segfault shortly after starting up.
1205
12062. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1207
12083. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1209
1210----------------------------------------------------------------------
