RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35
1a2fb4cd
RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
b0e5c039
RD
96Added wxPyWindow and wxPyControl which are just like their wx
97counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
117
118 If there are other methods that should be supported please let me
119 know.
120
121Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
122DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
123
a66212dc
RD
124Added wxArtProvider.
125
126Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
127(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
128are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
129something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
130implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
131
132Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
133
f9b24f07
RD
134Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
135creating a ScrolledPanel.
136
3eb221f6
RD
137Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
138other menu stuff.
c731eb47 139
3eb221f6
RD
140Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
141ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
142C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32 all and
143so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 144
763d71e4
RD
145Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
146modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
147transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
148tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
46e10fde 149win32com got rid of the tstate...
763d71e4 150
5fea3204
RD
151Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
152so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
153respond to mouse events and etc.
154
d6a3401d
RD
155Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
156on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
157
f6f98ecc
RD
158Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
159import and launch each tool.
763d71e4 160
3bd1e033 161
b8510c2f 162
4268f798 1632.3.2.1
71f1334b 164-------
4268f798
RD
165Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
166well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
167without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
168
169Added some patches from library contributors.
170
171
172
ebf4302c 1732.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
174-----
175Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
176EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
177wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
178and a demo to show them in action.
179
fea018f8
RD
180Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
181http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 182
c7e7022c 183Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 184
00b6c4e3 185Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 186
09f3d4e6
RD
187Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
188Rolinsky.
189
190Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 191default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
192coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
193creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
194as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
195passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
196resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
197the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
198etc.
199
fe0aca37 200Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
201accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
202from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
203means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
204are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
205wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 206
6d19860f
RD
207Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
208column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
209using wxColumnSorterMixin.
210
53fe40ba 211Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 212
6d8b4f8d 213Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 214
431f4c16 215Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 216
19a97bd6
RD
217Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
218are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
219multi-processor machine.
220
76bfdc78
RD
221Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
222messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
223
0122b7e3
RD
224Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
225
71f1334b
RD
226The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
227wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
228that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
229created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
230exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
231original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 232
9d37f964
RD
233Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
234DrawPointList.
235
79f1bf32
RD
236Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
237
729f4276
RD
238Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
239text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 240
71f1334b 241Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
242and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
243of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
244browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
245if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
246wx-dev list.
247
248Added wxStopWatch.
249
250Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
251
c0c84fa0
RD
252Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
253will now Disconnect the event.
254
255Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
256
7dbce44a
RD
257Added wxFileHistory.
258
71f1334b 259Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 260by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 261this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
262same document.
263
611dc22c
RD
264Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
265
78e8819c
RD
266Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
267Feuer.
268
269Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
270were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
271additional columns for each item. The classes are
272wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
273wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
274also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 275
4a61305d
RD
276Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
277from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
278wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
279visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
280SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
281wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
282details.
283
b37c7e1d 284
fea018f8
RD
285
286
286e2db6 2872.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
288-----
289Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
290code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
291on a custom event handler for example.)
292
d56cebe7
RD
293Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
294GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
295
296Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
297subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
298
299Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
300
301Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
302
286e2db6
RD
303Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
304
305Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
306
bf7945ce 307
9416aa89
RD
308
3092.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
310-----
311Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 312glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
313
314Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
315wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
316ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
317
318Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
319
1af9e5c5 320Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
321wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
322colour database.
323
6e18ca6c
RD
324Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
325wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
326access from non-GUI threads.
327
1af9e5c5
RD
328wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
329use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 330
6bb38ab6
RD
331Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
332
6bb38ab6
RD
333Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
334that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
335
49875c53
RD
336Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
337wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
338
e0672e2f
RD
339Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
340it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 341
1af9e5c5
RD
342Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
343convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
344converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
345containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
346included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
347specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
348compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
349convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
350wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
351the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
352
353Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
354experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
355many refreshes.
356
d1679124
RD
357A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
358the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 359
d7ec6564 360Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 361
d7ec6564 362Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 363
3b36695d
RD
364Added wxToggleButton.
365
366Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 367
9416aa89
RD
368Added some methods to wxGrid:
369 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
370 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
371 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
372 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
373 GetGridWindow
374 GetGridRowLabelWindow
375 GetGridColLabelWindow
376 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
377
378Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
379representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
380On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
381
382
383***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
384 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
385 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
386 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
387 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
388 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
389 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
390 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
391 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
392 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
393 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
394 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
395 use weak references.)
396
397 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
398 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
399 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
400 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
401 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
402 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
403 object-type related oddities to me.
404***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
405
406There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
407in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
408specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
409finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
410
411Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
412list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 413
10e07c70 414Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 415
493f1553
RD
416Added wxWave.
417
30aaddfe
RD
418Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
419useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
420make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
421Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
422of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
423please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
424
25832b3f
RD
425Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
426by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
427wxPython/samples.
428
493f1553 429
19cf4f80
RD
430
431
b075a3bb
RD
4322.2.6
433-----
434
435No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
436changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
437
1b62f00d 438
19cf4f80 439
1b62f00d 4402.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
441-----
442
443New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
444that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
445a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
446it to a wxString using the default encoding.
447
448Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
449
450Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
451
452Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 453a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
454
455Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
456column in report mode.
457
458Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
459bar after 2 seconds.
460
461Added wxJoystick.
462
463Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
464a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler

476wxPython/src/export.h
477

482Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
483wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
484wxPrinterDC2 name.
485
486Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
487that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
488
489Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
490
491Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
492mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
493
494Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
495integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
496XML-RPC server.

500New in 2.2.2
501------------
502
503Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
504Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
505from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
506that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
507releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
508have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
509interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
510some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
511how things work.
512
513I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
514of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
515This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
516builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
517use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
518platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
519wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
520install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
521using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
522
523Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
524contributed by Joerg Baumann.
525
526Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
527get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
528get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
529stdin.
530
531Removed the old python sizers.
532
533Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
534and wxRealPoint.
535
536Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
537the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
538libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
539
540Lots of little fixes here and there.
541
542Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
543wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
544wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

588WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
589Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
590handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
591confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
592coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
593generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
594the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

630Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
631available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
632new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
633consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
634good...)
635
636Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
637authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
638mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
639
640Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
641It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
642in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
643on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
644needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
645just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
646method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
647matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
648them.
649
650Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
651expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
652defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
653"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
654
655I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
656wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
657wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
658but I've included a very readable source file in the
659wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
660can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
661http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
662until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool

707The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
708wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
709but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
710support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
711methods look like this:
712
713 def AddTool(ID,
714 bitmap,
715 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
716 toggle = FALSE,
717 clientData = NULL,
718 shortHelpString = "",

720
721 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
722 bitmap,
723 shortHelpString = "",
724 longHelpString = "",
725 toggle=FALSE)
726
727
728There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
729that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.

753What's new in 2.1.11
754--------------------
755Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
756syncronized.
757
758wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
759wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
760itself.
761
762Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
763being added. This should remove the need for our
764wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
765
766wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
767no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
768probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
769a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
770an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
771
772Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
773
774Added new HTML printing classes.
775
776Added wxWindow.GetHandle
777
778Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
779it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
780(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
781wxPoint.)
782
783Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
784processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
785thread from other threads.
786
787Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
788
789Added wxFontEnumerator.
790
791Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
792
793wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
794Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
795
796Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
797

810major features.
811
812
813
814What's new in 2.1.4
815--------------------
816
817This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
818wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
819binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
820wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
821To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
822the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
823
824Now back to what's new...
825
826Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
827
828Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
829
830Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
831of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
832anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
833list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
834memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
835great!
836
837Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
838SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
839default sort order.
840
841Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
842either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
843example, the following are equivallent:
844
845 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
846 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
847
848Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
849handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
850is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
851understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
852pages. See the demo for an example.
853
854A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
855wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
856
857Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
858
859Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
860versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
861warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
862disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
863the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
864added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
865smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
866that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
867not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
868wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
869portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
870further details.
871
872Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
873wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
874accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
875directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
876that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
877Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
878for more info and examples in future releases.
879
880Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
881from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
882wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
883all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
884different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
885columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
886to use them.
887
888Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
889that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
890the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
891method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
892in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
893of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
894in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
895there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
896enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
897be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
898pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
899
900I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
901years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
902object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
903value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
904sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
905them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
906default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
907creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
908to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
909back again the next time something is written. (You can call
910app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
911redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
912object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
913class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
914RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
915wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
916
917 class MyApp(wxApp):
918 outputWindowClass = MyClass
919
920 def OnInit(self):
921 frame = MyFrame()
922 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
923 return true
924
925Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
926wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
927your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
928to really screw things up.
929
930Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
931in the wxWindows docs...
932
933Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
934shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
935shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
936that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
937frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
938bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
939a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
940problems...)
941
942
943
944
945What's new in 2.1b3
946--------------------
947
948This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
949
950Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
951for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
952patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
953old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
954features:
955
956 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
957 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
958 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
959
960 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
961
962 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
963 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
964 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
965 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
966
967
968There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
969raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
970Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
971see distrib/build.py for more details.
972
973wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
974two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
975takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
976interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
977
978
979
980
981
982What's new in 2.1b2
983--------------------
984
985Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
986
987Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
988provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
989their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
990It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
991line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
992
993It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
994process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
995prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
996is being unloaded by Python.
997
998I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
999make wxPython look bad.
1000
1001wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
1002wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
1003
1004Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1005
1006You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1007wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1008
1009Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1010code to show how to use it.
1011
1012Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1013matches MSW's.
1014
1015Added wxGrid.GetCells
1016
1017Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1018wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1019
1020Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1021wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1022
1023Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1024 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1025
1026Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1027objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1028a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1029
1030Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1031data transfer.
1032
1033Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1034
1035New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1036for unix systems.
1037
1038Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1039
1040SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1041in wx.cpp.
1042
1043
1044
1045
1046
1047What's new in 2.1b1
1048--------------------
1049Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1050item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1051wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1052
1053Added the Printing Framework.
1054
1055Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1056version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1057data after loading each extension module.
1058
1059Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1060wxWindows classes.
1061
1062Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1063symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1064when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1065
1066wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1067of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1068types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1069not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1070
1071
1072
1073What's new in 2.0b9
1074-------------------
1075Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1076
1077Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1078wxPython application.
1079
1080Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1081
1082Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1083associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1084this feature off.
1085
1086Added wxSafeYield function.
1087
1088OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1089
1090Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1091how it all works.
1092
1093The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1094DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1095
1096Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1097
1098Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1099wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1100
1101Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1102
1103Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1104methods.
1105
1106
1107
1108What's new in 2.0b8
1109-------------------
1110Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1111
1112Several missing methods from various classes.
1113
1114Various bug fixes.
1115
1116
1117
1118What's new in 2.0b7
1119-------------------
1120Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1121
1122Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1123
1124
1125
1126What's new in 2.0b6
1127-------------------
1128Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1129Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1130
1131
1132What's new in 2.0b5
1133-------------------
1134Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1135reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1136wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1137wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1138with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1139
1140I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1141in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1142have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1143diverges from wxWindows.
1144
1145Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1146window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1147it should just work... More news on this later.
1148
1149Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1150
1151Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1152wxRegConfig class.
1153
1154As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1155
1156
1157
1158What's new in 0.5.3
1159-------------------
1160Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1161
1162Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1163compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1164
1165
1166
1167What's new in 0.5.0
1168-------------------
1169Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1170wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1171namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1172prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1173
1174Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1175
1176Made the events work for wxGrid.
1177
1178Added wxConfig.
1179
1180Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1181
1182Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1183objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1184
1185Other assorted fixes and additions.
1186
1187
1188
1189
1190What's new in 0.4.2
1191-------------------
1192
1193wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1194static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1195<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1196down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1197DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1198because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1199
1200The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1201must have been a different issue all along...
1202
1203
1204
1205What's New in 0.4
1206-----------------
1207
12081. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1209Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1210linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1211extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1212And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1213version segfault shortly after starting up.
1214
12152. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1216
12173. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1218
1219----------------------------------------------------------------------
