52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35
1a2fb4cd
RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
b0e5c039
RD
96Added wxPyWindow and wxPyControl which are just like their wx
97counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
117
118 If there are other methods that should be supported please let me
119 know.
120
121Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
122DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
123
a66212dc
RD
124Added wxArtProvider.
125
126Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
127(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
128are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
129something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
130implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
131
132Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
133
f9b24f07
RD
134Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
135creating a ScrolledPanel.
136
3eb221f6
RD
137Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
138other menu stuff.
c731eb47 139
3eb221f6
RD
140Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
141ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
142C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32 all and
143so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 144
763d71e4
RD
145Fixed the ActiveXWrapper problem. Looks like when the win32com
146modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
147transient thread state structure. Since wxPython is now saving
148tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
46e10fde 149win32com got rid of the tstate...
763d71e4 150
5fea3204
RD
151Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext. This is
152so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
153respond to mouse events and etc.
154
763d71e4 155
3bd1e033 156
b8510c2f 157
4268f798 1582.3.2.1
71f1334b 159-------
4268f798
RD
160Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
161well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
162without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
163
164Added some patches from library contributors.
165
166
167
ebf4302c 1682.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
169-----
170Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
171EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
172wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
173and a demo to show them in action.
174
fea018f8
RD
175Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
176http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 177
c7e7022c 178Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 179
00b6c4e3 180Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 181
09f3d4e6
RD
182Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
183Rolinsky.
184
185Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 186default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
187coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
188creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
189as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
190passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
191resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
192the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
193etc.
194
fe0aca37 195Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
196accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
197from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
198means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
199are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
200wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 201
6d19860f
RD
202Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
203column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
204using wxColumnSorterMixin.
205
53fe40ba 206Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 207
6d8b4f8d 208Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 209
431f4c16 210Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 211
19a97bd6
RD
212Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
213are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
214multi-processor machine.
215
76bfdc78
RD
216Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
217messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
218
0122b7e3
RD
219Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
220
71f1334b
RD
221The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
222wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
223that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
224created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
225exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
226original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 227
9d37f964
RD
228Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
229DrawPointList.
230
79f1bf32
RD
231Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
232
729f4276
RD
233Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
234text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 235
71f1334b 236Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
237and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
238of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
239browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
240if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
241wx-dev list.
242
243Added wxStopWatch.
244
245Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
246
c0c84fa0
RD
247Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
248will now Disconnect the event.
249
250Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
251
7dbce44a
RD
252Added wxFileHistory.
253
71f1334b 254Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 255by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 256this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
257same document.
258
611dc22c
RD
259Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
260
78e8819c
RD
261Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
262Feuer.
263
264Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
265were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
266additional columns for each item. The classes are
267wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
268wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
269also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 270
4a61305d
RD
271Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
272from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
273wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
274visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
275SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
276wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
277details.
278
b37c7e1d 279
fea018f8
RD
280
281
286e2db6 2822.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
283-----
284Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
285code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
286on a custom event handler for example.)
287
d56cebe7
RD
288Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
289GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
290
291Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
292subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
293
294Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
295
296Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
297
286e2db6
RD
298Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
299
300Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
301
bf7945ce 302
9416aa89
RD
303
3042.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
305-----
306Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 307glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
308
309Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
310wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
311ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
312
313Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
314
1af9e5c5 315Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
316wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
317colour database.
318
6e18ca6c
RD
319Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
320wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
321access from non-GUI threads.
322
1af9e5c5
RD
323wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
324use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 325
6bb38ab6
RD
326Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
327
6bb38ab6
RD
328Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
329that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
330
49875c53
RD
331Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
332wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
333
e0672e2f
RD
334Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
335it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 336
1af9e5c5
RD
337Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
338convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
339converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
340containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
341included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
342specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
343compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
344convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
345wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
346the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
347
348Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
349experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
350many refreshes.
351
d1679124
RD
352A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
353the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 354
d7ec6564 355Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 356
d7ec6564 357Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 358
3b36695d
RD
359Added wxToggleButton.
360
361Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 362
9416aa89
RD
363Added some methods to wxGrid:
364 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
365 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
366 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
367 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
368 GetGridWindow
369 GetGridRowLabelWindow
370 GetGridColLabelWindow
371 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
372
373Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
374representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
375On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
376
377
378***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
379 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
380 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
381 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
382 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
383 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
384 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
385 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
386 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
387 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
388 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
389 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
390 use weak references.)
391
392 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
393 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
394 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
395 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
396 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
397 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
398 object-type related oddities to me.
399***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
400
401There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
402in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
403specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
404finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
405
406Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
407list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 408
10e07c70 409Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 410
493f1553
RD
411Added wxWave.
412
30aaddfe
RD
413Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
414useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
415make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
416Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
417of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
418please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
419
25832b3f
RD
420Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
421by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
422wxPython/samples.
423
493f1553 424
19cf4f80
RD
425
426
b075a3bb
RD
4272.2.6
428-----
429
430No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
431changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
432
1b62f00d 433
19cf4f80 434
1b62f00d 4352.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
436-----
437
438New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
439that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
440a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
441it to a wxString using the default encoding.
442
443Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
444
445Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
446
447Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 448a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
449
450Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
451column in report mode.
452
453Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
454bar after 2 seconds.
455
456Added wxJoystick.
457
458Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
459a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
460object, (usually a window.)
461
462Added wxNotifyEvent.Allow()
463
de20db99
RD

477Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a

481Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
482that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
483
484Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
485
486Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
487mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
488
489Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
490integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
491XML-RPC server.

495New in 2.2.2
496------------
497
498Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
499Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
500from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
501that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
502releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
503have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
504interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
505some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
506how things work.
507
508I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
509of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
510This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
511builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
512use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
513platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
514wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
515install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
516using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
517
518Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
519contributed by Joerg Baumann.
520
521Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
522get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
523get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
524stdin.
525
526Removed the old python sizers.
527
528Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
529and wxRealPoint.
530
531Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
532the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
533libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
534
535Lots of little fixes here and there.
536
537Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
538wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
539wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

583WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
584Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
585handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
586confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
587coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
588generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
589the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

625Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
626available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
627new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
628consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
629good...)
630
631Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
632authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
633mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
634
635Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
636It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
637in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
638on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
639needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
640just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
641method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
642matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
643them.
644
645Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
646expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
647defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
648"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
649
650I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
651wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
652wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
653but I've included a very readable source file in the
654wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
655can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
656http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
657until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool

702The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython

704but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
705support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
706methods look like this:
707
708 def AddTool(ID,

711 toggle = FALSE,
712 clientData = NULL,

717 bitmap,
718 shortHelpString = "",
719 longHelpString = "",

721
722
723There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods

748What's new in 2.1.11
749--------------------
750Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
751syncronized.
752
753wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
754wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
755itself.
756
757Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
758being added. This should remove the need for our
759wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
760
761wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
762no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
763probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
764a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
765an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
766
767Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
768
769Added new HTML printing classes.
770
771Added wxWindow.GetHandle
772
773Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
774it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
775(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
776wxPoint.)
777
778Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
779processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
780thread from other threads.
781
782Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
783
784Added wxFontEnumerator.
785

802-------------------

805major features.
806
807
808
809What's new in 2.1.4
810--------------------
811
812This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
813wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
814binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
815wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
816To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
817the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
818
819Now back to what's new...
820
821Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
822
823Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
824
825Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
826of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
827anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
828list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
829memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
830great!
831
832Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
833SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
834default sort order.
835
836Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
837either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
838example, the following are equivallent:
839
840 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
841 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
842
843Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
844handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
845is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
846understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
847pages. See the demo for an example.
848
849A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
850wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
851
852Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
853
854Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
855versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
856warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
857disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
858the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
859added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
860smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
861that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
862not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
863wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
864portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
865further details.
866
867Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
868wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
869accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
870directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
871that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
872Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
873for more info and examples in future releases.
874
875Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
876from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
877wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
878all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
879different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
880columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
881to use them.
882
883Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
884that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
885the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
886method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
887in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
888of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
889in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
890there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
891enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
892be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
893pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
894
895I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
896years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
897object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
898value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
899sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
900them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
901default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
902creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
903to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
904back again the next time something is written. (You can call
905app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
906redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
907object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
908class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
909RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
910wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
911
912 class MyApp(wxApp):
913 outputWindowClass = MyClass
914
915 def OnInit(self):
916 frame = MyFrame()
917 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
918 return true
919
920Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
921wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
922your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
923to really screw things up.
924
925Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
926in the wxWindows docs...
927
928Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
929shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
930shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
931that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
932frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
933bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
934a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
935problems...)

938
939
940What's new in 2.1b3
941--------------------
942
943This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
944
945Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
946for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
947patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
948old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
949features:
950
951 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
952 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
953 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
954
955 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
956
957 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
958 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
959 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
960 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
961
962
963There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
964raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
965Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
966see distrib/build.py for more details.
967
968wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
969two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
970takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
971interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
972
973
974
975
976
977What's new in 2.1b2
978--------------------
979
980Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
981
982Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
983provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
984their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
985It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
986line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
987
988It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
989process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
990prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
991is being unloaded by Python.
992
993I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
994make wxPython look bad.
995
996wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
997wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
998
999Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
1000
1001You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
1002wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
1003
1004Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
1005code to show how to use it.
1006
1007Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
1008matches MSW's.
1009
1010Added wxGrid.GetCells
1011
1012Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1013wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1014
1015Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1016wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1017
1018Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1019 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1020
1021Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1022objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1023a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1024
1025Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1026data transfer.
1027
1028Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1029
1030New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1031for unix systems.
1032
1033Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1034
1035SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1036in wx.cpp.
1037
1038
1039
1040
1041
1042What's new in 2.1b1
1043--------------------
1044Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1045item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1046wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1047
1048Added the Printing Framework.
1049
1050Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1051version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1052data after loading each extension module.
1053
1054Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1055wxWindows classes.
1056
1057Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1058symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1059when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1060
1061wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1062of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1063types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1064not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1065
1066
1067
1068What's new in 2.0b9
1069-------------------
1070Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1071
1072Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1073wxPython application.
1074
1075Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1076
1077Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1078associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1079this feature off.
1080
1081Added wxSafeYield function.
1082
1083OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1084
1085Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1086how it all works.
1087
1088The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1089DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1090
1091Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1092
1093Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1094wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1095
1096Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1097
1098Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1099methods.
1100
1101
1102
1103What's new in 2.0b8

1105Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1106
1107Several missing methods from various classes.
1108
1109Various bug fixes.
1110
1111
1112
1113What's new in 2.0b7

1115Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
1116
1117Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1118
1119
1120
1121What's new in 2.0b6
1122-------------------
1123Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1124Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1125
1126
1127What's new in 2.0b5
1128-------------------
1129Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1130reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1131wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1132wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1133with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1134
1135I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1136in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1137have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1138diverges from wxWindows.
1139
1140Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1141window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1142it should just work... More news on this later.
1143
1144Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1145
1146Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1147wxRegConfig class.
1148
1149As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1150
1151
1152
1153What's new in 0.5.3
1154-------------------
1155Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1156
1157Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1158compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1159
1160
1161
1162What's new in 0.5.0
1163-------------------
1164Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1165wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1166namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1167prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1168
1169Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1170
1171Made the events work for wxGrid.
1172
1173Added wxConfig.
1174
1175Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1176
1177Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1178objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1179
1180Other assorted fixes and additions.
1181
1182
1183
1184
1185What's new in 0.4.2
1186-------------------
1187
1188wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1189static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1190<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1191down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1192DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1193because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1194
1195The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1196must have been a different issue all along...
1197
1198
1199
1200What's New in 0.4
1201-----------------
1202
12031. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1204Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1205linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1206extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1207And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1208version segfault shortly after starting up.
1209
12102. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1211
12123. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1213
1214----------------------------------------------------------------------
