RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35
1a2fb4cd
RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
b0e5c039
RD
96Added wxPyWindow and wxPyControl which are just like their wx
97counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
117
118 If there are other methods that should be supported please let me
119 know.
120
121Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
122DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
123
a66212dc
RD
124Added wxArtProvider.
125
126Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
f9b24f07
RD
127(or any callable Python object) to be called once the next time there
128are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
a66212dc
RD
129something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
130implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
131
132Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
133
f9b24f07
RD
134Added a demo of using a sizer in a wxScrolledWindow, in effect
135creating a ScrolledPanel.
136
3eb221f6
RD
137Added a sample to the demo that shows how to use radio menu items, and
138other menu stuff.
c731eb47 139
3eb221f6
RD
140Added wxIEHtmlWin. This is essentially the same as using IE with the
141ActiveXWrapper already in the library, but it is implemented all in
142C++ and therefore does not need any of the modules from win32 all and
143so it is less fragile in the face of changes.
b5a5d647 144
3bd1e033 145
b8510c2f 146
4268f798 1472.3.2.1
71f1334b 148-------
4268f798
RD
149Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
150well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
151without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
152
153Added some patches from library contributors.
154
155
156
ebf4302c 1572.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
158-----
159Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
160EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
161wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
162and a demo to show them in action.
163
fea018f8
RD
164Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
165http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 166
c7e7022c 167Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 168
00b6c4e3 169Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 170
09f3d4e6
RD
171Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
172Rolinsky.
173
174Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 175default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
176coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
177creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
178as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
179passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
180resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
181the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
182etc.
183
fe0aca37 184Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
185accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
186from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
187means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
188are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
189wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 190
6d19860f
RD
191Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
192column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
193using wxColumnSorterMixin.
194
53fe40ba 195Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 196
6d8b4f8d 197Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 198
431f4c16 199Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 200
19a97bd6
RD
201Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
202are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
203multi-processor machine.
204
76bfdc78
RD
205Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
206messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
207
0122b7e3
RD
208Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
209
71f1334b
RD
210The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
211wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
212that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
213created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
214exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
215original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 216
9d37f964
RD
217Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
218DrawPointList.
219
79f1bf32
RD
220Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
221
729f4276
RD
222Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
223text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 224
71f1334b 225Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
226and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
227of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
228browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
229if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
230wx-dev list.
231
232Added wxStopWatch.
233
234Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
235
c0c84fa0
RD
236Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
237will now Disconnect the event.
238
239Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
240
7dbce44a
RD
241Added wxFileHistory.
242
71f1334b 243Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 244by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 245this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
246same document.
247
611dc22c
RD
248Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
249
78e8819c
RD
250Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
251Feuer.
252
253Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
254were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
255additional columns for each item. The classes are
256wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
257wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
258also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 259
4a61305d
RD
260Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
261from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
262wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
263visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
264SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
265wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
266details.
267
b37c7e1d 268
fea018f8
RD
269
270
286e2db6 2712.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
272-----
273Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
274code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
275on a custom event handler for example.)
276
d56cebe7
RD
277Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
278GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
279
280Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
281subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
282
283Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
284
285Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
286
286e2db6
RD
287Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
288
289Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
290
bf7945ce 291
9416aa89
RD
292
2932.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
294-----
295Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 296glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
297
298Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
299wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
300ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
301
302Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
303
1af9e5c5 304Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
305wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
306colour database.
307
6e18ca6c
RD
308Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
309wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
310access from non-GUI threads.
311
1af9e5c5
RD
312wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
313use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 314
6bb38ab6
RD
315Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
316
6bb38ab6
RD
317Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
318that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
319
49875c53
RD
320Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
321wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
322
e0672e2f
RD
323Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
324it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 325
1af9e5c5
RD
326Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
327convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
328converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
329containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
330included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
331specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
332compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
333convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
334wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
335the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
336
337Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
338experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
339many refreshes.
340
d1679124
RD
341A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
342the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 343
d7ec6564 344Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 345
d7ec6564 346Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 347
3b36695d
RD
348Added wxToggleButton.
349
350Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 351
9416aa89
RD
352Added some methods to wxGrid:
353 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
354 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
355 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
356 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
357 GetGridWindow
358 GetGridRowLabelWindow
359 GetGridColLabelWindow
360 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
361
362Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
363representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
364On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
365
366
367***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
368 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
369 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
370 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
371 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
372 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
373 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
374 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
375 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
376 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
377 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
378 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
379 use weak references.)
380
381 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
382 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
383 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
384 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
385 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
386 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
387 object-type related oddities to me.
388***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
389
390There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
391in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
392specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
393finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
394
395Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
396list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 397
10e07c70 398Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 399
493f1553
RD
400Added wxWave.
401
30aaddfe
RD
402Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
403useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
404make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
405Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
406of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
407please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
408
25832b3f
RD
409Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
410by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
411wxPython/samples.
412
493f1553 413
19cf4f80
RD
414
415
b075a3bb
RD
4162.2.6
417-----
418
419No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
420changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
421
1b62f00d 422
19cf4f80 423
1b62f00d 4242.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
425-----
426
427New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
428that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
429a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
430it to a wxString using the default encoding.
431
432Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
433
434Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
435
436Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 437a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
438
439Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
440column in report mode.
441
442Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
443bar after 2 seconds.
444
445Added wxJoystick.
446
447Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
448a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
449object, (usually a window.)
450
451Added wxNotifyEvent.Allow()
452
de20db99
RD
453Fixed GOBS of reference leaks.
454
1e7ecb7b
RD
455Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into
456multiple extension modules again. A Python CObject is used to allow
1b62f00d
RD
457the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
458the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b
RD
459libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
460wxPython/src/export.h
461
462Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
463extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and

466Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
467wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
468wxPrinterDC2 name.
469
470Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
471that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
472
473Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
474
475Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
476mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
477
478Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
479integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
480XML-RPC server.

484New in 2.2.2
485------------
486
487Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
488Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
489from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
490that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
491releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
492have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
493interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
494some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
495how things work.
496
497I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
498of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
499This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
500builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
501use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
502platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
503wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
504install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
505using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
506
507Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
508contributed by Joerg Baumann.
509
510Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
511get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
512get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
513stdin.
514
515Removed the old python sizers.
516
517Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
518and wxRealPoint.
519
520Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
521the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
522libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
523
524Lots of little fixes here and there.
525
526Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
527wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
528wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

572WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
573Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
574handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
575confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
576coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
577generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
578the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

614Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
615available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
616new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
617consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
618good...)
619
620Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
621authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
622mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
623
624Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
625It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
626in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
627on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
628needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
629just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
630method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
631matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
632them.
633
634Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
635expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
636defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
637"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
638
639I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
640wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
641wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
642but I've included a very readable source file in the
643wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
644can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
645http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
646until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool

691The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython

693but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
694support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
695methods look like this:
696
697 def AddTool(ID,
698 bitmap,

700 toggle = FALSE,
701 clientData = NULL,

706 bitmap,
707 shortHelpString = "",
708 longHelpString = "",

711
712There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods

737What's new in 2.1.11
738--------------------
739Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
740syncronized.
741
742wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
743wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
744itself.
745
746Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
747being added. This should remove the need for our
748wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
749
750wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
751no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
752probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
753a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
754an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
755
756Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
757
758Added new HTML printing classes.
759
760Added wxWindow.GetHandle
761
762Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
763it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
764(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
765wxPoint.)
766
767Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
768processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
769thread from other threads.
770
771Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
772
773Added wxFontEnumerator.

794major features.
795
796
797
798What's new in 2.1.4
799--------------------
800
801This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
802wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
803binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
804wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
805To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
806the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
807
808Now back to what's new...
809
810Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
811
812Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
813
814Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
815of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
816anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
817list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
818memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
819great!
820
821Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
822SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
823default sort order.
824
825Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
826either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
827example, the following are equivallent:
828
829 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
830 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
831
832Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
833handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
834is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
835understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
836pages. See the demo for an example.
837
838A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
839wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
840
841Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
842
843Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
844versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
845warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
846disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
847the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
848added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
849smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
850that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
851not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
852wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
853portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
854further details.
855
856Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
857wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
858accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
859directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
860that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
861Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
862for more info and examples in future releases.
863
864Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
865from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
866wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
867all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
868different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
869columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
870to use them.
871
872Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
873that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
874the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
875method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
876in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
877of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
878in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
879there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
880enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
881be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
882pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
883
884I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
885years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
886object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
887value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
888sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
889them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
890default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
891creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
892to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
893back again the next time something is written. (You can call
894app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
895redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
896object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
897class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
898RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
899wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
900
901 class MyApp(wxApp):
902 outputWindowClass = MyClass
903
904 def OnInit(self):
905 frame = MyFrame()
906 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
907 return true
908
909Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
910wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
911your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
912to really screw things up.
913
914Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
915in the wxWindows docs...
916
917Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
918shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
919shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
920that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
921frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
922bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
923a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
924problems...)
925
926
927
928
929What's new in 2.1b3
930--------------------
931
932This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
933
934Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
935for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
936patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
937old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
938features:
939
940 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
941 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
942 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
943
944 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
945
946 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
947 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
948 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
949 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
950
951
952There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
953raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
954Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
955see distrib/build.py for more details.
956
957wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
958two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
959takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
960interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
961
962
963
964
965
966What's new in 2.1b2
967--------------------
968
969Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
970
971Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
972provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
973their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
974It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
975line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
976
977It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
978process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
979prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
980is being unloaded by Python.
981
982I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
983make wxPython look bad.
984
985wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
986wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
987
988Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
989
990You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
991wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
992
993Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
994code to show how to use it.
995
996Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
997matches MSW's.
998
999Added wxGrid.GetCells
1000
1001Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
1002wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
1003
1004Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
1005wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
1006
1007Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
1008 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
1009
1010Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1011objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1012a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1013
1014Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1015data transfer.
1016
1017Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1018
1019New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1020for unix systems.
1021
1022Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1023
1024SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1025in wx.cpp.

1030
1031What's new in 2.1b1
1032--------------------
1033Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1034item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1035wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1036
1037Added the Printing Framework.
1038
1039Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1040version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1041data after loading each extension module.
1042
1043Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1044wxWindows classes.
1045
1046Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1047symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1048when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1049
1050wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1051of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1052types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1053not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1054

1056
1057What's new in 2.0b9
1058-------------------
1059Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1060
1061Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1062wxPython application.
1063
1064Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1065
1066Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1067associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1068this feature off.
1069
1070Added wxSafeYield function.
1071
1072OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1073
1074Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1075how it all works.
1076
1077The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1078DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1079
1080Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1081
1082Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1083wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1084
1085Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1086
1087Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1088methods.
1089
1090
1091
1092What's new in 2.0b8

1094Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
1095
1096Several missing methods from various classes.
1097
1098Various bug fixes.

1110What's new in 2.0b6
1111-------------------
1112Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1113Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1114
1115
1116What's new in 2.0b5
1117-------------------
1118Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1119reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1120wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1121wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1122with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1123
1124I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1125in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1126have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1127diverges from wxWindows.
1128
1129Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1130window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1131it should just work... More news on this later.
1132
1133Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1134
1135Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1136wxRegConfig class.
1137
1138As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1139
1140
1141
1142What's new in 0.5.3
1143-------------------
1144Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1145
1146Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1147compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1148
1149
1150
1151What's new in 0.5.0
1152-------------------
1153Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1154wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1155namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1156prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1157
1158Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1159
1160Made the events work for wxGrid.
1161
1162Added wxConfig.
1163
1164Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1165
1166Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1167objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1168
1169Other assorted fixes and additions.
1170
1171
1172
1173
1174What's new in 0.4.2
1175-------------------
1176
1177wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1178static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1179<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1180down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1181DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1182because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1183
1184The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1185must have been a different issue all along...
1186
1187
1188
1189What's New in 0.4
1190-----------------
1191
11921. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1193Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1194linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1195extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1196And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1197version segfault shortly after starting up.
1198
11992. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1200
12013. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1202
1203----------------------------------------------------------------------
