RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
68bc8549
RD
25Added the wxPython.lib.rcsizer module which contains RowColSizer.
26This sizer is based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a
27row and column for each item, as well as optional column or row
28spanning. Cells with no item assigned to it are just left blank.
29Stretchable rows or columns are specified and work the same as in
30wxFlexGridSizer.
96de41c2 31
18fc9fa3
RD
32Updated XRCed from Roman Rolinsky
33
e9159fe8
RD
34Added wxBufferedDC.
35
1a2fb4cd
RD
36Upgraded wxSTC from Scintilla 1.40 to Scintilla 1.45
37
b96c7a38 38UNICODE!
b96c7a38
RD
39 wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
40 disabled. Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
41 used. Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
36d91193 42 it is also available in wxWindows on the platform. Currently
b96c7a38
RD
43 wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
44 the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
45 it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
46
47 Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
48 family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
49 same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well! This is
36d91193
RD
50 done by using a special library and DLL with the application
51 called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode). It simply gets out of
52 the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
53 win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
54 versions of the windows API. So far I have not been able to get
55 this to work perfectly on win9x. Most things work fine but
56 wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
57 unicode build on win95.
b96c7a38
RD
58
59 So how do you use it? It's very simple. When unicode is enabled,
60 then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
61 from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
62 parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
63 accept either a Python string or unicode object. If a string
64 object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
65 converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
66 system encoding. If you need to use a string in some other
67 encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
68 codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
69 method.
70
726fc00a 71Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
b96c7a38 72
0e9b78ce
RD
73Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.
74
68bc8549
RD
75Added wxLocale and wxEncodingConverter.
76
c8b34a16
RD
77A little black magic... When the C++ object (for a window or
78whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
79to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it. This leads to
80crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
81pointer. The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
82Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
83a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted. This works
84for any class that is OOR aware.
0e9b78ce 85
33ff77f6
RD
86Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
87wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their
2d956b58 88derived classes.
33ff77f6 89
d55d6b3f
RD
90Added wxImage.GetDataBuffer which returns an in-place edit buffer of
91the image data. (Patch #546009)
33ff77f6 92
94e36a51
RD
93Added a sample that shows how to embed wxPython in a wxWindows C++
94application.
b5a5d647 95
b0e5c039
RD
96Added wxPyWindow and wxPyControl which are just like their wx
97counterparts except they allow some of the more common C++ virtual
98methods to be overridden in Python derived classes. The methods
99supported are:
100
101 DoMoveWindow
102 DoSetSize
103 DoSetClientSize
104 DoSetVirtualSize
105 DoGetSize
106 DoGetClientSize
107 DoGetPosition
108 DoGetVirtualSize
109 DoGetBestSize
110 InitDialog
111 TransferDataFromWindow
112 TransferDataToWindow
113 Validate
114 AcceptsFocus
115 AcceptsFocusFromKeyboard
116 GetMaxSize
117
118 If there are other methods that should be supported please let me
119 know.
120
121Changed wxGenButton to derive from wxPyControl and overload
122DoGetBestSize and AcceptsFocus.
123
a66212dc
RD
124Added wxArtProvider.
125
126Added wxCallAfter which is a helper function that registers a function
127(or any callable Python object) to be called one time the next time
128there are no pending events. This is useful for when you need to do
129something but it can't be done during the current event handler. The
130implementation is very simple, see wxPython/wx.py.
131
132Fixed a boatload of reference leaks.
133
b5a5d647 134
3bd1e033 135
b8510c2f 136
4268f798 1372.3.2.1
71f1334b 138-------
4268f798
RD
139Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
140well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
141without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
142
143Added some patches from library contributors.
144
145
146
ebf4302c 1472.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
148-----
149Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
150EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
151wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
152and a demo to show them in action.
153
fea018f8
RD
154Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
155http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 156
c7e7022c 157Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 158
00b6c4e3 159Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 160
09f3d4e6
RD
161Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
162Rolinsky.
163
164Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 165default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
166coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
167creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
168as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
169passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
170resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
171the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
172etc.
173
fe0aca37 174Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
175accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
176from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
177means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
178are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
179wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 180
6d19860f
RD
181Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
182column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
183using wxColumnSorterMixin.
184
53fe40ba 185Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 186
6d8b4f8d 187Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 188
431f4c16 189Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 190
19a97bd6
RD
191Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
192are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
193multi-processor machine.
194
76bfdc78
RD
195Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
196messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
197
0122b7e3
RD
198Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
199
71f1334b
RD
200The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
201wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
202that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
203created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
204exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
205original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 206
9d37f964
RD
207Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
208DrawPointList.
209
79f1bf32
RD
210Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
211
729f4276
RD
212Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
213text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 214
71f1334b 215Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
216and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
217of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
218browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
219if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
220wx-dev list.
221
222Added wxStopWatch.
223
224Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
225
c0c84fa0
RD
226Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
227will now Disconnect the event.
228
229Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
230
7dbce44a
RD
231Added wxFileHistory.
232
71f1334b 233Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 234by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 235this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
236same document.
237
611dc22c
RD
238Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
239
78e8819c
RD
240Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
241Feuer.
242
243Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
244were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
245additional columns for each item. The classes are
246wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
247wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
248also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 249
4a61305d
RD
250Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
251from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
252wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
253visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
254SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
255wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
256details.
257
b37c7e1d 258
fea018f8
RD
259
260
286e2db6 2612.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
262-----
263Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
264code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
265on a custom event handler for example.)
266
d56cebe7
RD
267Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
268GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
269
270Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
271subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
272
273Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
274
275Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
276
286e2db6
RD
277Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
278
279Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
280
bf7945ce 281
9416aa89
RD
282
2832.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
284-----
285Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 286glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
287
288Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
289wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
290ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
291
292Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
293
1af9e5c5 294Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
295wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
296colour database.
297
6e18ca6c
RD
298Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
299wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
300access from non-GUI threads.
301
1af9e5c5
RD
302wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
303use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 304
6bb38ab6
RD
305Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
306
6bb38ab6
RD
307Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
308that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
309
49875c53
RD
310Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
311wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
312
e0672e2f
RD
313Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
314it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 315
1af9e5c5
RD
316Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
317convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
318converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
319containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
320included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
321specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
322compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
323convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
324wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
325the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
326
327Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
328experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
329many refreshes.
330
d1679124
RD
331A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
332the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 333
d7ec6564 334Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 335
d7ec6564 336Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 337
3b36695d
RD
338Added wxToggleButton.
339
340Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 341
9416aa89
RD
342Added some methods to wxGrid:
343 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
344 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
345 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
346 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
347 GetGridWindow
348 GetGridRowLabelWindow
349 GetGridColLabelWindow
350 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
351
352Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
353representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
354On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
355
356
357***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
358 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
359 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
360 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
361 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
362 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
363 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
364 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
365 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
366 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
367 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
368 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
369 use weak references.)
370
371 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
372 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
373 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
374 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
375 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
376 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
377 object-type related oddities to me.
378***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
379
380There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
381in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
382specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
383finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
384
385Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
386list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 387
10e07c70 388Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 389
493f1553
RD
390Added wxWave.
391
30aaddfe
RD
392Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
393useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
394make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
395Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
396of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
397please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
398
25832b3f
RD
399Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
400by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
401wxPython/samples.
402
493f1553 403
19cf4f80
RD
404
405
b075a3bb
RD
4062.2.6
407-----
408
409No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
410changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
411
1b62f00d 412
19cf4f80 413
1b62f00d 4142.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
415-----
416
417New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
418that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
419a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
420it to a wxString using the default encoding.
421
422Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
423
424Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
425
426Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 427a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
428
429Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
430column in report mode.
431
432Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
433bar after 2 seconds.
434
435Added wxJoystick.
436
437Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
438a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
439object, (usually a window.)
440
441Added wxNotifyEvent.Allow()
442
de20db99
RD
443Fixed GOBS of reference leaks.
444
1e7ecb7b
RD
445Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into
446multiple extension modules again. A Python CObject is used to allow
1b62f00d
RD
447the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
448the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b
RD
449libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
450wxPython/src/export.h
451
452Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
453extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
454utils. Will probably add more later.
455
1b62f00d
RD
456Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
457wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
458wxPrinterDC2 name.
459
460Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
461that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
462
463Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
464
465Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
466mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
467
468Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
469integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
470XML-RPC server.

474New in 2.2.2
475------------
476
477Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
478Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
479from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
480that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
481releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
482have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
483interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
484some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
485how things work.
486
487I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
488of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
489This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
490builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
491use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
492platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
493wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
494install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
495using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
496
497Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
498contributed by Joerg Baumann.
499
500Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
501get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
502get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
503stdin.
504
505Removed the old python sizers.
506
507Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
508and wxRealPoint.
509
510Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
511the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
512libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
513
514Lots of little fixes here and there.
515
516Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
517wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
518wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.

562WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
563Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
564handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
565confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
566coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
567generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
568the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to

604Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
605available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
606new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
607consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
608good...)
609
610Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
611authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
612mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
613
614Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
615It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
616in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
617on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
618needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
619just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
620method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
621matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
622them.
623
624Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
625expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
626defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
627"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
628
629I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
630wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
631wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
632but I've included a very readable source file in the
633wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
634can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
635http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
636until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool

681The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
682wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
683but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
684support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
685methods look like this:
686
687 def AddTool(ID,
688 bitmap,
689 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
690 toggle = FALSE,
691 clientData = NULL,
692 shortHelpString = "",

694
695 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
696 bitmap,
697 shortHelpString = "",
698 longHelpString = "",
699 toggle=FALSE)
700
701
702There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
703that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.

727What's new in 2.1.11
728--------------------
729Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
730syncronized.
731
732wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
733wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
734itself.
735
736Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
737being added. This should remove the need for our
738wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
739
740wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
741no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
742probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
743a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
744an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
745
746Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
747
748Added new HTML printing classes.
749
750Added wxWindow.GetHandle
751
752Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
753it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
754(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
755wxPoint.)
756
757Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
758processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
759thread from other threads.
760
761Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
762
763Added wxFontEnumerator.
764
765Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
766
767wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
768Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
769
770Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
771
772Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on

780What's new in 2.1.5
781-------------------

783crept in at the last minute before 2.1.4 was called done. No new
784major features.
785
786
787
788What's new in 2.1.4
789--------------------
790
791This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
792wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
793binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
794wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
795To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
796the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
797
798Now back to what's new...
799
800Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
801
802Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
803
804Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
805of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
806anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
807list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
808memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
809great!
810
811Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
812SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
813default sort order.
814
815Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
816either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
817example, the following are equivallent:
818
819 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
820 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
821
822Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
823handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
824is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
825understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
826pages. See the demo for an example.
827
828A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
829wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
830
831Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
832
833Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
834versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
835warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
836disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
837the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
838added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
839smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
840that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
841not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
842wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
843portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
844further details.
845
846Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
847wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
848accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
849directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
850that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
851Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
852for more info and examples in future releases.
853
854Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
855from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
856wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
857all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
858different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
859columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
860to use them.
861
862Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
863that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
864the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
865method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
866in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
867of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
868in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
869there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
870enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
871be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
872pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
873
874I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
875years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
876object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
877value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
878sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
879them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
880default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
881creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
882to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
883back again the next time something is written. (You can call
884app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
885redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
886object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
887class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
888RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
889wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
890
891 class MyApp(wxApp):
892 outputWindowClass = MyClass
893
894 def OnInit(self):
895 frame = MyFrame()
896 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
897 return true
898
899Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
900wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
901your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
902to really screw things up.
903
904Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
905in the wxWindows docs...
906
907Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
908shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
909shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
910that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
911frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
912bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
913a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
914problems...)
915
916
917
918
919What's new in 2.1b3
920--------------------
921
922This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
923
924Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
925for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
926patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
927old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
928features:
929
930 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
931 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
932 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
933
934 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
935
936 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
937 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
938 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
939 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
940
941
942There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
943raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
944Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
945see distrib/build.py for more details.
946
947wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
948two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
949takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
950interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
951
952
953
954
955
956What's new in 2.1b2
957--------------------
958
959Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
960
961Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
962provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
963their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
964It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
965line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
966
967It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
968process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
969prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
970is being unloaded by Python.
971
972I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
973make wxPython look bad.
974
975wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
976wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
977
978Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
979
980You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
981wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
982
983Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
984code to show how to use it.
985
986Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
987matches MSW's.
988
989Added wxGrid.GetCells
990
991Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
992wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
993
994Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
995wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
996
997Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
998 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
999
1000Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
1001objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
1002a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
1003
1004Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
1005data transfer.
1006
1007Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
1008
1009New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
1010for unix systems.
1011
1012Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
1013
1014SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
1015in wx.cpp.

1020
1021What's new in 2.1b1
1022--------------------
1023Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
1024item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
1025wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
1026
1027Added the Printing Framework.
1028
1029Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
1030version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
1031data after loading each extension module.
1032
1033Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
1034wxWindows classes.
1035
1036Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
1037symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
1038when doing any Py_DECREFs.
1039
1040wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
1041of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
1042types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
1043not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
1044

1046
1047What's new in 2.0b9
1048-------------------
1049Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
1050
1051Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
1052wxPython application.
1053
1054Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
1055
1056Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
1057associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
1058this feature off.
1059
1060Added wxSafeYield function.
1061
1062OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
1063
1064Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
1065how it all works.
1066
1067The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
1068DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
1069
1070Added a couple missing items from the docs.
1071
1072Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
1073wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
1074
1075Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
1076
1077Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
1078methods.
1079
1080
1081

1085
1086Several missing methods from various classes.
1087
1088Various bug fixes.

1095
1096Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
1097

1099
1100What's new in 2.0b6
1101-------------------
1102Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1103Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1104
1105
1106What's new in 2.0b5
1107-------------------
1108Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1109reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1110wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1111wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1112with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1113
1114I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1115in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1116have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1117diverges from wxWindows.
1118
1119Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1120window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1121it should just work... More news on this later.
1122
1123Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1124
1125Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1126wxRegConfig class.
1127
1128As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1129
1130
1131
1132What's new in 0.5.3
1133-------------------
1134Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1135
1136Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1137compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1138
1139
1140
1141What's new in 0.5.0
1142-------------------
1143Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1144wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1145namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1146prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1147
1148Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1149
1150Made the events work for wxGrid.
1151
1152Added wxConfig.
1153
1154Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1155
1156Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1157objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1158
1159Other assorted fixes and additions.
1160
1161
1162
1163
1164What's new in 0.4.2
1165-------------------
1166
1167wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1168static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1169<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1170down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1171DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1172because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1173
1174The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1175must have been a different issue all along...
1176
1177
1178
1179What's New in 0.4
1180-----------------
1181
11821. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1183Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1184linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1185extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1186And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1187version segfault shortly after starting up.
1188
11892. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1190
11913. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
1192
1193----------------------------------------------------------------------
