b5a5d647
RD
52.3.3
6-----
b5a5d647
RD
7Added wxSplashScreen.
8
68320e40
RD
9Added wxGenericDirCtrl.
10
ce914f73 11Added wxMultiChoiceDialog.
68320e40 12
769a9cb2
RD
13The calltip window and autocomplete window in wxSTC will now use a
14wxPopupWindow if available so they can extend beyond the client area
15of the STC if needed.
16
f74ff5ef
RD
17Finished wrapping and providing typemaps for wxInputStream and also
18added the stream ctor and other methods for wxImage so images can now
19be loaded from any Python "file-like" object.
20
afb810d9
RD
21Changed the img2py tool to use PNG instead of XPM for embedding image
22data in Python source code, and the generated code now uses streams to
23convert the image data to wxImage, wxBitmap, or wxIcon.
f74ff5ef 24
96de41c2
RD
25Added wxPython.lib.rcsizer which contains RowColSizer. This sizer is
26based on code from Niki Spahiev and lets you specify a row and column
27for each item, as well as optional column or row spanning. Cells with
dae710e7 28no item assigned to it are just left blank. Stretchable rows or
96de41c2
RD
29columns are specified and work the same as in wxFlexGridSizer.
30

71f1334b 39-------
4268f798
RD
40Changed (again) how the Python global interpreter lock is handled as
41well as the Python thread state. This time it works on SMP machines
42without barfing and is also still compatible with Python debuggers.
43
44Added some patches from library contributors.
45

47
71f1334b 48
ebf4302c 492.3.2
4f3449b4
RD
50-----
51Added EVT_HELP, EVT_HELP_RANGE, EVT_DETAILED_HELP,
52EVT_DETAILED_HELP_RANGE, EVT_CONTEXT_MENU, wxHelpEvent,
53wxContextMenuEvent, wxContextHelp, wxContextHelpButton, wxTipWindow,
54and a demo to show them in action.
55
fea018f8
RD
56Deprecated PyShell and PyShellWindow, added a snapshot of PyCrust (see
57http://sourceforge.net/projects/pycrust/. )
4f3449b4 58
c7e7022c 59Added the new virtual list capabilities to wxListCtrl.
4f3449b4 60
00b6c4e3 61Added a wxSTC style editor from Riaan Booysen to the sample apps.
4f3449b4 62
09f3d4e6
RD
63Added XRCed to the wxPython Tools directory, contributed by Roman
64Rolinsky.
65
66Added a new "constructor" to most of the window classes that calls the
6d19860f 67default C++ contructor, (the one with no parameters) and also added the
09f3d4e6
RD
68coresponding Create(...) method. This allows you to do a 2-step
69creation of windows which is sometimes required for doing things such
70as setting extended style flags before the window is created, or for
71passing the object to the XRC resource system to be created from the
72resource. The name of the new "constructor" is the original name of
73the class with a "Pre" in it. For example, wxPreWindow, wxPreFrame,
74etc.
75
fe0aca37 76Updated to version 1.40 of Scintilla and updated wxStyledTextCtrl
a6978454
RD
77accordingly. While doing this update I dropped the wxLB_SORT style
78from the wxListBox created for the AutoComplete functionality. This
79means that you will have to sort the keyword lists yourself, but you
80are free to do case sensitive or case insensitive sorts and set the
81wxSTC flag accordingly.
4f3449b4 82
6d19860f
RD
83Updated wxColumnSorterMixin to also be able to place sort icons on the
84column headers, and updated the wxListCtrl demo to show it off by
85using wxColumnSorterMixin.
86
53fe40ba 87Added wxGenBitmapTextButton, TablePrint, etc. contribs from Lorne White.
ddcb3d83 88
6d8b4f8d 89Added wxNativeFontInfo and wxFontMapper.
4f3449b4 90
431f4c16 91Added pySketch to the samples.
4f3449b4 92
19a97bd6
RD
93Significantly changed how the Python interpreter lock and thread state
94are managed, which should fix the problem of running on a
95multi-processor machine.
96
76bfdc78
RD
97Added wxPyLog so log targets can be created in Python to handle log
98messages however is wished. See demo/Main.py for an example.
99
0122b7e3
RD
100Added wxFindReplaceDialog.
101
71f1334b
RD
102The second phase of OOR is implemented for wxEvtHandler, wxSizer,
103wxShape and derived classes. This means that functions and methods
104that return an object derived from wxEvtHandler that was originally
105created in Python, will return the original Python object (if it still
106exists) instead of letting SWIG wrap a new shadow object around the
107original C++ pointer.
76bfdc78 108
9d37f964
RD
109Added some optimization methods to wxDC: GetBoundingBox, DrawLineList,
110DrawPointList.
111
79f1bf32
RD
112Added a set of sophisticated Error Dialogs from Chris Fama.
113
729f4276
RD
114Added wxRightTextCtrl from Josu Oyanguren to wxPython.lib for aligning
115text in a wxTextCtrl to the right side.
76bfdc78 116
71f1334b 117Added wxURLDataObject and an example showing drag and drop of URLs to
b37c7e1d
RD
118and from web browsers. It's still not 100% bullet-proof for all types
119of browsers, but it works for the majority of cases with the popular
120browsers on Windows. On wxGTK it seems that only Netscape 4.x works,
121if anybody has any suggestions about this please bring it up on the
122wx-dev list.
123
124Added wxStopWatch.
125
126Added wxMimeTypesManager and wxFileType.
127
c0c84fa0
RD
128Passing None for the handler parameter to one of the EVT_** functions
129will now Disconnect the event.
130
131Added wxPopupWindow and wxPopupTransientWindow.
132
7dbce44a
RD
133Added wxFileHistory.
134
71f1334b 135Added wxDynamicSashWindow, which allows you to endlessly split windows
ebf4302c 136by dragging a little tab next to the scrollbars. Added a demo to show
71f1334b 137this and also the ability of multiple wxStyledTextCtrls to share the
ebf4302c
RD
138same document.
139
611dc22c
RD
140Added wxEditableListBox gizmo.
141
78e8819c
RD
142Updated wxEditor with lots of enhancements from Steve Howell and Adam
143Feuer.
144
145Added the "SplitTree gizmos" which are a collection of classes that
146were designed to operate together and provide a tree control with
147additional columns for each item. The classes are
148wxRemotelyScrolledTreeCtrl, wxTreeCompanionWindow,
149wxThinSplitterWindow, and wxSplitterScrolledWindow, some of which may
150also be useful by themselves.
1918b6f7 151
4a61305d
RD
152Added wxDllWidget from Vaclav Slavik which allows wx widgets derived
153from wxWindow to be loaded from a C++ .dll (or .so) and be used in a
154wxPython program, without the widget having to be SWIGged first. The
155visible API of the widget is limited to wxWindow methods plus a
156SendCommand method, but it is still quite powerful. See
157wxPython/contrib/dllwidget and wxPython/demo/dllwidget for more
158details.

162
286e2db6 1632.3.1
bf7945ce
RD
164-----
165Added EVT_GRID_EDITOR_CREATED and wxGridEditorCreatedEvent so the user
166code can get access to the edit control when it is created, (to push
167on a custom event handler for example.)
168
d56cebe7
RD
169Added wxTextAttr class and SetStyle, SetDefaultStyle and
170GetDefaultStyle methods to wxTextCtrl.
171
172Added ability to use xml resource files. Still need to add ability to
173subclass wxXmlResourceHandler, etc...
174
175Added wxGridAutoEditMixin to the mixins library package.
176
177Made ColourSelect be derived from wxButton.
178
286e2db6
RD
179Fixed img2py to work correctly with Python 2.1.
180
181Added enhanced wxVTKRenderWindow by Prabhu Ramachandran
182
bf7945ce 183
9416aa89
RD
184
1852.3.0
19cf4f80
RD
186-----
187Removed initial startup dependency on the OpenGL DLLs so only the
9416aa89 188glcanvasc.pyd depends on them, (on wxMSW.)
19cf4f80
RD
189
190Changed wxFont, wxPen, wxBrush to not implicitly use the
9416aa89
RD
191wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List objects behind the scenes, but to use normal
192ctor and dtors.
19cf4f80
RD
193
194Exposed the wxThe[Font|Pen|Brush]List to wxPython.
195
1af9e5c5 196Also added wxTheColourDatabase and added a library module (in the
19cf4f80
RD
197wxPython.lib.colourdb module) to load LOTS more colour names into the
198colour database.
199
6e18ca6c
RD
200Added wxWakeUpMainThread, wxMutexGuiEnter, wxMutexGuiLeave,
201wxMutexGuiLocker and wxThread_IsMain to assist with dealing with GUI
202access from non-GUI threads.
203
1af9e5c5
RD
204wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow is now (more) thread safe if non-GUI threads
205use print, sys.stdout.write, etc.
6e18ca6c 206
6bb38ab6
RD
207Added CreateTextSizer and CreateButtonSizer to wxDialog
208
6bb38ab6
RD
209Added wxPython/lib/infoframe.py from Chris Fama. It contains a class
210that can be used in place of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.
211
49875c53
RD
212Added colourselect.py, imagebrowser.py and an updated calendar.py to
213wxPython/lib from Lorne White.
214
e0672e2f
RD
215Added patch to wxPoint_LIST_helper from Tim Hochberg that should make
216it gobs faster in certain situations.
6bb38ab6 217
1af9e5c5
RD
218Added tools that will take an image file in a wx supported format and
219convert it to data embedded in a Python source file. The image is
9416aa89
RD
220converted to XPM format which is essentially a list of strings
221containing info about each pixel. The image's transparency mask is
222included, if there is one, or a mask can be added if a mask colour is
223specified on the command line. It is then pickled and optionally
224compressed and written to a Python source file along with functions to
225convert it to either a wxBitmap or a wxImage. See
226wxPython/demo/images.py for examples, and wxPython/Tools/img2py.py for
227the implementation.
1af9e5c5
RD
228
229Fixed wxStyledTextCtrl to be much faster on wxGTK. There was some
230experimental code that got left in place that ended up causing way too
231many refreshes.
232
d1679124
RD
233A couple more hacks in my_distutils.py so wxPython can be built with
234the distutils that comes with Python 2.1.
1af9e5c5 235
d7ec6564 236Added a ton of missing methods for wxPrintData.
1af9e5c5 237
d7ec6564 238Switched to InnoSetup for MSW distributions.
19cf4f80 239
3b36695d
RD
240Added wxToggleButton.
241
242Fixed bug that prevented wxTreeCtrl.OnCompareItems from being called.
d1679124 243
9416aa89
RD
244Added some methods to wxGrid:
245 GetCellHighlightPenWidth
246 GetCellHighlightROPenWidth
247 SetCellHighlightPenWidth
248 SetCellHighlightROPenWidth
249 GetGridWindow
250 GetGridRowLabelWindow
251 GetGridColLabelWindow
252 GetGridCornerLabelWindow
253
254Added wxGetClientDisplayRect which on wxMSW returns a wxRect
255representing the area on screen not occupied by the taskbar and such.
256On other platforms it is equivallent to wxGetDisplaySize.
257
258
259***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
260 Implemented the first phase of OOR (Original Object Return). See
261 the text in the demo for more details of what this means, but in a
262 nutshell methods such as wxWindow.GetParent or FindWindowById will
263 now return a shadow object of the proper type if it can. By
264 "proper type" I mean that if the wxWindow pointer returned from
265 FindWindowById really points to a wxButton then the Python object
266 constructed will be of a wxButtonPtr class instead of wxWindowPtr
267 as before. This should reduce or eliminiate the need for
268 wxPyTypeCast. (Woo Hoo!) The objects returned are still not the
269 original Python object, but that is the next step. (Although it
270 will probably only work on Python 2.1 and beyond because it will
271 use weak references.)
272
273 This first phase of the OOR plan is fairly significant and has
274 required a lot of changes all over wxPython, most of which should
275 be transparent to you, however I'm not 100% sure that it didn't
276 introduce any new bugs that are hiding somewhere and didn't get
277 stomped on during my testing. So please be sure to test everything
278 thoroughly when you install this version and be sure to report any
279 object-type related oddities to me.
280***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---
281
282There is now a wxObject class that most other classes derive from like
283in C++, but the methods provided don't really match but are wxPython
bf7945ce
RD
284specific. It could have been added long ago but OOR required it so it
285finally got done.
9416aa89
RD
286
287Finally added wxPyLineShape.GetLineControlPoints, which has been on my
288list for a while. The above OOR modification made this easier.
d1679124 289
10e07c70 290Fixed the __cmp__ methods for wxPoint and others.
419c299a 291
493f1553
RD
292Added wxWave.
293
30aaddfe
RD
294Added the wxPython.lib.mixins package to the library, it is where
295useful mix-in classes can be placed. Currently there is one to help
bf7945ce
RD
296make the columns in a wxListCtrl sortable, and the MagicIMageList from
297Mike Fletcher. If you have any custom code that can be factored out
298of existing classes into a mix-in that would be useful to others
30aaddfe
RD
299please send it to me for inclusion in this package.
300
25832b3f
RD
301Added a few little sample applications to help newbies to get started
302by having smaller functional apps to play with. They can be found in
303wxPython/samples.
304
493f1553 305
19cf4f80
RD
306
307
b075a3bb
RD
3082.2.6
309-----
310
311No changes happened in the Python wrappers for this release, only
312changes and fixes in the wxWindows library.
313
1b62f00d 314
19cf4f80 315
1b62f00d 3162.2.5
185d7c3e
RD
317-----
318
319New typemaps for wxString when compiling for Python 2.0 and beyond
320that allow Unicode objects to be passed as well as String objects. If
321a Unicode object is passed PyString_AsStringAndSize is used to convert
322it to a wxString using the default encoding.
323
324Fixed the generic buttons so tool tips work for them.
325
326Fixed a bug in the demo's tree control.
327
328Added a listbox to the listbox demo that shows how to find items with
1e7ecb7b 329a matching prefix as keys are typed.
185d7c3e
RD
330
331Added code to the wxListCtrl demo to show how to get text from a
332column in report mode.
333
334Added code to the toolbar demo to clear the long help from the status
335bar after 2 seconds.
336
337Added wxJoystick.
338
339Fixed wxTimer so it can be used as described in the docs, either with
340a Notify method in a subclass, or sending an event to a wxEvtHandler
341object, (usually a window.)
342
343Added wxNotifyEvent.Allow()
344
de20db99
RD
345Fixed GOBS of reference leaks.
346
1e7ecb7b
RD
347Massive code changes and cleanup to allow wxPython to be split into
348multiple extension modules again. A Python CObject is used to allow
1b62f00d
RD
349the "export" of SWIG functions and other common helper functions from
350the wxc module to other modules, even if they are in separate shared
1e7ecb7b
RD
351libraries. Should also be usable from 3rd party code, just include
352wxPython/src/export.h
353
354Changed the default setup so the following are built as separate
355extension modules: calendar, glcanvas, grid, html, ogl, stc, and
356utils. Will probably add more later.
357
1b62f00d
RD
358Changed the wxPrinterDC to use the new constructor taking a
359wxPrintData object. The old ctor is still there using the
360wxPrinterDC2 name.
361
362Added wxPython.lib.anchors.py from Riaan Booysen. It contains a class
363that implements Delphi's Anchors with wxLayoutConstraints.
364
365Added wxPython.lib.fancytext from Timothy Hochberg.
366
367Changed the GenericButtons to send their event in idle time, so the
368mouse won't be captured when the event handler is called.
369
370Added wxPython.lib.rpcMixin from Greg Landrum, although it's not
371integrated with the demo yet. It allows a wxPython GUI to be an
372XML-RPC server.
373
185d7c3e
RD
374
375
c368d904
RD
376New in 2.2.2
377------------
378
379Significantly changed how the wxStyledtextCtrl code that wraps
380Scintilla is implemented. Most of it is now automatically generated
381from an interface definition file provided by Scintilla. This means
382that it will be much easier to stay in sync with new Scintilla
383releases, but also means that some of the method and identifier names
384have changed. See wxPython/demo/data/stc.h for a copy of the C++
385interface from which the Python interface is generated. There is now
386some inline documentation in that file that should really help explain
387how things work.
388
389I am now using the Python Distutils to build wxPython and to make some
390of the distribution files. (See http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/)
391This means no more messing with my kludgy build.py/Makefile hack,
392builds will be more consistent with other Python extensions that also
393use Distutils, and will hopefully make wxPython easier to build for
394platforms where there have been troubles before. If you are building
395wxPython for Python 1.5.2 or for 1.6, then you will need to get and
396install version 1.0 of Distutils from the website above. If you are
397using Python 2.0 then you already have it.
398
399Added wxInputStream and the wxFileSystem family of classes,
400contributed by Joerg Baumann.
401
402Added wxProcess and support for it to wxExecute. wxProcess lets you
403get notified when an asyncronous child process terminates, and also to
404get input/output streams for the child process's stdout, stderr and
405stdin.
406
407Removed the old python sizers.
408
409Added __add__, __sub__ and __cmp__ (equality check only) for wxPoint
410and wxRealPoint.
411
412Changed the build to make one big extension module instead of one for
413the core and each contrib. This allowed me to do away with the
414libwxPyHelpers.so on unix systems.
415
416Lots of little fixes here and there.
417
418Some hacks on wxGTK to try and make the AutoComplete listbox in the
419wxStyledTextCtrl to behave better. It's still not as nice as on
420wxMSW, but at least it's a bit more usable now.
421

425New in 2.2.1
426------------
427
428Various tweaks, fixes, missing methods, etc.
429
c368d904

433
f6bcfd97
BP
434New in 2.2.0
435------------
436
437Added wxLog and friends.
438
439Added wxFrame.ShowFullScreen for MSW.
440
441Added PyShellWindow to the wxPython.lib package.
442
443
444
445New in 2.1.16
446-------------
447
448Added an attribute named labelDelta to the generic buttons that
449specifies how far to offset the label when the button is in the
450depressed state.
451
452Added wxTipProvider and friends. See the demo for an example.
453
454wxGrid can now change the cell highlight colour.
455
456Added wxDragImage.
457
458Fixed printing on wxGTK.
459
460Added wxDateTime, wxTimeSpan, and wxDateSpan to wxPython.utils.
461
462Added wxCalendarCtrl.
463
464WARNING: A while back I asked what should be done about the Magic
465Method Names. (Methods that are automatically turned into event
466handlers by virtue of their name.) The consensus was that it is more
467confusing to have them than to try and expand them to have greater
468coverage. I am finally getting around to removing the code that
469generates the event binding. This means that if you are using any of
470the following method names without a EVT_* call that you need to
471modify your code to add the EVT_* to hook the event to the method.
472
473 OnChar
474 OnSize
475 OnEraseBackground
476 OnSysColourChanged
477 OnInitDialog
478 OnPaint
479 OnIdle
480 OnActivate
481 OnMenuHighlight
482 OnCloseWindow
483 OnScroll
484
485Added wxSpinCtrl.
486
487
488
489
490New in 2.1.15
164b735b
RD
491-------------
492
493Fixed wxTreeCtrl.HitTest to return both the tree item as well as the
494flags that clairify where the click was in relation to the item.
495
854862f5
RD

504Plugged a memory leak.
505
506Wrapped the new wxGrid and friends. The old wxGrid class is no longer
507available. There are some incompatibilities, and unfortunately the
508new classes are not documented yet, (however the methods are more
509consistent with each other now so you may be able to guess pretty
510good...)
511
512Updated filebrowsebutton.py and calendar.py with changes from their
513authors. There is now a FileBrowseButtonWithHistory class (what a
514mouthful!) and wxCalendar has printing support.
515
516Added ActiveXWrapper to the library, and some good demos of it too.
517It works great for embedding a COM (a.k.a OCX, a.k.a ActiveX) control
518in a window and calling its methods. It actually creates a new class
519on the fly that derives from wxWindow, the COM CoClass and others
520needed to make it all work. The resulting class can be instantiated
521just like wxWindow, used in sizers, etc. It also responds to all COM
522method calls, properties, etc., and if the class or a mix-in has
523matching method names, then the COM events will be propogated back to
524them.
525
526Created a typemap that allows a string to be used for parameters
527expecting a wxColour type. The string is either a colour name as
528defined in the wxColourDatabase, or a colour spec of the form
529"#RRGGBB". See the wxStyledTextCtrl demo for an example.
530
531I almost forgot to mention the wxStyledTextCtrl! Yes, the
532wxStyledTextCtrl is finally in wxPython!! (And the crowd goes
533wild...) There's no documentaTion yet (the crowd boos and hisses...)
534but I've included a very readable source file in the
535wxPython/demo/data directory, a couple fairly good examples, and you
536can also refer to the Scintilla documentaion at
537http://www.scintilla.org/ScintillaDoc.html to help fill in the gaps
538until the docs are done. (The croud murmers contentedly as the tool
539provider smiles convincingly and removes his flame-proof suit.)

548Updated wxMVCTree and added a demo for it, also fixed layout on GTK
549and some flicker problems.
550
551Added a wrapper class for the Visualization ToolKit (or VTK) in the
552wxPython.lib.vtk module. (http://www.kitware.com/)
553
554Fixed wxTreeCtrl.SetItemImage and GetItemImage to recognise the new

556
557Added wxPython.lib.spashscreen from Mike Fletcher.
558
559Added wxPython.lib.filebrowsebutton also from Mike Fletcher.
560
561Renamed wxTreeCtrl.GetParent to GetItemParent to avoid a name clash
562with wxWindow.GetParent.
563
564Added wxIntersectRect to compute the intersection of two wxRect's.
565It is used like this:
566
567 intersect = wxIntersectRect(rect1, rect2)
568
569If r1 and r2 don't intersect then None is returned, otherwise the
570rectangle representing the intersection is returned.

576Added a set of Generic Buttons to the library. These are simple
577window classes that look and act like native buttons, but you can have

579to colours, fonts, etc. There is a ToggleButton as well as Bitmap

583The C++ wxToolBar classes have been redone, and so have the wxPython
584wrappers. There have been slight modifications to some of the methods
585but shouldn't impact anybody too much. I took the opportunity to add
586support for setting user data on each toolbar tool. The new AddTool
587methods look like this:
588
589 def AddTool(ID,
590 bitmap,
591 pushedBitmap = wxNullBitmap,
592 toggle = FALSE,
593 clientData = NULL,
594 shortHelpString = "",
595 longHelpString = "")
596
597 def AddSimpleTool(ID,
598 bitmap,
599 shortHelpString = "",
600 longHelpString = "",
601 toggle=FALSE)
602
603
604There are also coresponding InsertTool and InsertSimpleTool methods
605that additionally take an integer position as the first parameter.
606
9e57c2a0 607Added a wrapper for the new PCX and TIFF ImageHandlers.

629What's new in 2.1.11
630--------------------
631Skipped a few version numbers so wxMSW, wxGTK and wxPython are all
632syncronized.
633
634wxImage.SetData now makes a copy of the image data before giving it to
635wxImage. I mistakenly thought that wxImage would copy the data
636itself.
637
638Fixed wxMSW's notebook so the pages get their size set as they are
639being added. This should remove the need for our
640wxNotebook.ResizeChildren hack.
641
642wxPanels now support AutoLayout, and wxNotebooks and wxSplitterWindows
643no longer tell their children to Layout() themselves. This will
644probably only effect you if you have a wxWindow with AutoLayout inside
645a notebook or splitter. If so, either change it to a wxPanel or add
646an EVT_SIZE handler that calls Layout().
647
648Fixed deadlock problem that happened when using threads.
649
650Added new HTML printing classes.
651
652Added wxWindow.GetHandle
653
654Apparently wxMouseEvent.Position has been depreciated in wxWindows as
655it is no longer available by default. You can use GetPositionTuple
656(returning a tuple with x,y) instead, or GetPosition (returning a
657wxPoint.)
658
659Added wxPostEvent function that allows events to be posted and then
660processed later. This is a thread-safe way to interact with the GUI
661thread from other threads.
662
663Added Clipboard and Drag-and-Drop classes.
664
665Added wxFontEnumerator.
666
667Many updates to wxMenu, wxMenuBar.
668
669wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent derived classes now give you the actual
670Python object in the event handler instead of a new shadow.
671
672Added a Calendar widget from Lorne White to the library.
673
674Made some fixes to the wxFloatbar. It still has some troubles on

683-------------------

686major features.
687
688
689
690What's new in 2.1.4
691--------------------
692
693This release is NOT syncronized with a snapshot release of wxGTK or
694wxMSW. For MSW this isn't much of a problem since you can get the
695binaries from the web site. For other platforms you'll have to build
696wxGTK from CVS. (See http://web.ukonline.co.uk/julian.smart/wxwin/cvs.htm)
697To get the same set of sources from CVS that I used, checkout using
698the wxPy-2-1-4 tag.
699
700Now back to what's new...
701
702Much more support for event-less callbacks and add-on modules.
703
704Created add-on module with wxOGL classes.
705
706Added wxWindow.GetChildren(). Be careful of this. It returns a *copy*
707of the list of the window's children. While you are using the list if
708anything changes in the real list (a child is deleted, etc.) then the
709list you are holding will suddenly have window references to garbage
710memory and your app will likely crash. But if you are careful it works
711great!
712
713Added a bunch of new and missing methods to wxTreeCrtl. The
714SortChildren method is now supported, but currently only for the
715default sort order.
716
717Added typemaps for wxSize, wxPoint, wxRealPoint, and wxRect that allow
718either the actual objects or Python sequence values to be used. For
719example, the following are equivallent:
720
721 win = wxWindow(parent, size = wxSize(100, 100))
722 win = wxWindow(parent, size = (100, 100))
723
724Super-charged the wxHtml module. You can now create your own tag
725handlers and also have access to the parser and cell classes. There
726is a tag handler in the library at wxPython.lib.wxpTag that
727understands the WXP tag and is able to place wxPython windows on HTML
728pages. See the demo for an example.
729
730A bunch of the methods of wxMenuBar were previously ifdef'd out for
731wxGTK. Added them back in since the methods exist now.
732
733Wrapped the wxHtmlHelpController and related classes.
734
735Wrapped the C++ versions of wxSizer and friends. The Python-only
736versions are still in the library, but depreciated. (You will get a
737warning message if you try to use them, but the warning can be
738disabled.) The usage of the C++ versions is slightly different, and
739the functionality of wxBorderSizer is now part of wxBoxSizer. I have
740added a few methods to wxSizer to try and make the transition as
741smooth as possible, I combined all Add methods into a single method
742that handles all cases, added an AddMany method, etc. One step I did
743not take was to make the default value of flag in the Add method be
744wxGROW. This would have made it more backward compatible, but less
745portable to and from wxWin C++ code. Please see the docs and demo for
746further details.
747
748Added wxPyEvent and wxPyCommandEvent classes, derived from wxEvent and
749wxCommandEvent. Each of them has SetPyData and GetPyData methods that
750accept or return a single Python object. You can use these classes
751directly or derive from them to create your own types of event objects
752that can pass through the wxWindows event system without loosing their
753Python parts (as long as they are stored with SetPyData.) Stay tuned
754for more info and examples in future releases.
755
756Added wxPython.lib.grids as an example of how to derive a new sizer
757from the C++ sizers. In this module you will find wxGridSizer and
758wxFlexGridSizer. wxGridSizer arrainges its items in a grid in which
759all the widths and heights are the same. wxFlexgridSizer allows
760different widths and heights, and you can also specify rows and/or
761columns that are growable. See the demo for a couple examples for how
762to use them.
763
764Added the wxValidator class, and created a class named wxPyValidator
765that should be used for the base class of any Python validators. See
766the demo for an example. Please note that you MUST implement a Clone
767method in your validator classes because of the way some things work
768in the underlying C++ library. I did not add wxTextValidator because
769of some issues of how it transfers data to and from a wxString, which
770in wxPython is automatically translated to and from Python strings, so
771there would never be a concrete wxString that would hang around long
772enough for the validator to do its job. On the other hand, it should
773be real easy to duplicate the functionality of wxTextValidator in a
774pure Python class derived from wxPyValidator.
775
776I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
777years! Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
778object? Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
779value. This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
780sys.stderr. A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
781them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow. (On windows the
782default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.) This class
783creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
784to sys.stdout or sys.stderr. If you close the window it will come
785back again the next time something is written. (You can call
786app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.) If you would rather that the stdio be
787redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
788object's constructor that is a filename. If you want to use your own
789class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
790RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
791wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
792
793 class MyApp(wxApp):
794 outputWindowClass = MyClass
795
796 def OnInit(self):
797 frame = MyFrame()
798 self.SetTopWindow(frame)
799 return true
800
801Please see the implementation of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow and wxApp in
802wx.py for more details. A few words of caution: if you are running
803your app in a debugger, changing sys.stdout and sys.stderr is likely
804to really screw things up.
805
806Added wxCaret. Unfortunately it's author has still not documented it
807in the wxWindows docs...
808
809Some new 3rd party contributions in wxPython.lib. PyShell, in
810shell.py is an interesting implementaion of an interactive Python
811shell in wxWindows. floatbar.py has a class derived from wxToolBar
812that can sense mouse drags and then reparent itself into another
813frame. Moving the new frame close to where it came from puts the tool
814bar back into the original parent. (Unfortunately there is currently
815a bug in wxGTK's wxFrame.SetToolBar so the FloatBar has some
816problems...)
817
818
819
820
821What's new in 2.1b3
822--------------------
823
824This release is syncronized with release 2.1 snapshot 9 of wxWindows.
825
826Switched to using SWIG from CVS (see http://swig.cs.uchicago.edu/cvs.html)
827for some of the new features and such. Also they have encorporated my
828patches so there is really no reason to stick with the current (very
829old) release... This version of SWIG gives the following new
830features:
831
832 1. Keyword arguments. You no longer have to specify all the
833 parameters with defaults to a method just to specify a
834 non-default value on the end. You can now do this instead:
835
836 win = wxWindow(parent, -1, style = mystyle)
837
838 2. There is now an an equivalence between Python's None and C++'s
839 NULL. This means that any methods that might return NULL will
840 now return None and you can use none where wxWindows might be
841 expecting NULL. This makes things much more snake-ish.
842
843
844There is a new build system based on a new Python program instead of
845raw makefiles. Now wxPython builds are virtually the same on MSW or
846Unix systems. See the end of this file for new build instructions and
847see distrib/build.py for more details.
848
849wxDC.Bilt now includes the useMask parameter, and has been split into
850two different versions. wxDC.BlitXY is like what was there before and
851takes raw coordinants and sizes, and the new wxDC.Blit is for the new
852interface using wxPoints and a wxSize.
853
854
855
856
857
858What's new in 2.1b2
859--------------------
860
861Added the missing wxWindow.GetUpdateRegion() method.
862
863Made a new change in SWIG (update your patches everybody) that
864provides a fix for global shadow objects that get an exception in
865their __del__ when their extension module has already been deleted.
866It was only a 1 line change in .../SWIG/Modules/pycpp.cxx at about
867line 496 if you want to do it by hand.
868
869It is now possible to run through MainLoop more than once in any one
870process. The cleanup that used to happen as MainLoop completed (and
871prevented it from running again) has been delayed until the wxc module
872is being unloaded by Python.
873
874I fixed a bunch of stuff in the C++ version of wxGrid so it wouldn't
875make wxPython look bad.
876
877wxWindow.PopupMenu() now takes a wxPoint instead of x,y. Added
878wxWindow.PopupMenuXY to be consistent with some other methods.
879
880Added wxGrid.SetEditInPlace and wxGrid.GetEditInPlace.
881
882You can now provide your own app.MainLoop method. See
883wxPython/demo/demoMainLoop.py for an example and some explaination.
884
885Got the in-place-edit for the wxTreeCtrl fixed and added some demo
886code to show how to use it.
887
888Put the wxIcon constructor back in for GTK as it now has one that
889matches MSW's.
890
891Added wxGrid.GetCells
892
893Added wxSystemSettings static methods as functions with names like
894wxSystemSettings_GetSystemColour.
895
896Removed wxPyMenu since using menu callbacks have been depreciated in
897wxWindows. Use wxMenu and events instead.
898
899Added alternate wxBitmap constructor (for MSW only) as
900 wxBitmapFromData(data, type, width, height, depth = 1)
901
902Added a helper function named wxPyTypeCast that can convert shadow
903objects of one type into shadow objects of another type. (Like doing
904a down-cast.) See the implementation in wx.py for some docs.
905
906Fixed wxImage GetData and SetData to properly use String objects for
907data transfer.
908
909Added access methods to wxGridEvent.
910
911New Makefile/Setup files supporting multiple dynamic extension modules
912for unix systems.
913
914Fixes for the wxGLCanvas demo to work around a strange bug in gtk.
915
916SWIG support routines now compiled separately instead of being bundled
917in wx.cpp.
918
919
920
921
922
923What's new in 2.1b1
924--------------------
925Fixed wxComboBox.SetSelection so that it actually sets the selected
926item. (Actually just removed it from wxPython and let it default to
927wxChoice.SetSelection which was already doing the right thing.)
928
929Added the Printing Framework.
930
931Switched back to using the wxWindows DLL for the pre-built Win32
932version. The problem was needing to reinitialize static class info
933data after loading each extension module.
934
935Lots of little tweaks and additions to reflect changes to various
936wxWindows classes.
937
938Fixed a bug with attaching objects to tree items. Actually was a
939symptom of a larger problem with not obtaining the interpreter lock
940when doing any Py_DECREFs.
941
942wxSizer and friends. Sizers are layout tools that manage a colection
943of windows and sizers. Different types of sizers apply different
944types of layout algorithms. You saw it here first! These classes are
945not even in the wxWindows C++ library yet!
946
947
948
949What's new in 2.0b9
950-------------------
951Bug fix for ListCtrl in test4.py (Was a missing file... DSM!)
952
953Bug fix for occassional GPF on Win32 systems upon termination of a
954wxPython application.
955
956Added wxListBox.GetSelections returning selections as a Tuple.
957
958Added a wxTreeItemData that is able to hold any Python object and be
959associated with items in a wxTreeCtrl. Added test pytree.py to show
960this feature off.
961
962Added wxSafeYield function.
963
964OpenGL Canvas can be optionally compiled in to wxPython.
965
966Awesome new Demo Framework for showing off wxPython and for learning
967how it all works.
968
969The pre-built Win32 version is no longer distributing the wxWindows
970DLL. It is statically linked with the wxWindows library instead.
971
972Added a couple missing items from the docs.
973
974Added wxImage, wxImageHandler, wxPNGHandler, wxJPEGHandler,
975wxGIFHandler and wxBMPHandler.
976
977Added new methods to wxTextCtrl.
978
979Fixed some problems with how SWIG was wrapping some wxTreeCtrl
980methods.
981
982
983
984What's new in 2.0b8
985-------------------
986Support for using Python threads in wxPython apps.
987
988Several missing methods from various classes.
989
990Various bug fixes.
991
992
993
994What's new in 2.0b7
995-------------------
996Added DLG_PNT and DLG_SZE convienience methods to wxWindow class.
997
998Added missing constructor and other methods for wxMenuItem.
999
1000
1001
1002What's new in 2.0b6
1003-------------------
1004Just a quickie update to fix the self-installer to be compatible with
1005Python 1.5.2b2's Registry settings.
1006
1007
1008What's new in 2.0b5
1009-------------------
1010Well obviously the numbering scheme has changed. I did this to
1011reflect the fact that this truly is the second major revision of
1012wxPython, (well the third actually if you count the one I did for
1013wxWindows 1.68 and then threw away...) and also that it is associated
1014with the 2.0 version of wxWindows.
1015
1016I have finally started documenting wxPython. There are several pages
1017in the wxWindows documentation tree specifically about wxPython, and I
1018have added notes within the class references about where and how wxPython
1019diverges from wxWindows.
1020
1021Added wxWindow_FromHWND(hWnd) for wxMSW to construct a wxWindow from a
1022window handle. If you can get the window handle into the python code,
1023it should just work... More news on this later.
1024
1025Added wxImageList, wxToolTip.
1026
1027Re-enabled wxConfig.DeleteAll() since it is reportedly fixed for the
1028wxRegConfig class.
1029
1030As usual, some bug fixes, tweaks, etc.
1031
1032
1033
1034What's new in 0.5.3
1035-------------------
1036Added wxSashWindow, wxSashEvent, wxLayoutAlgorithm, etc.
1037
1038Various cleanup, tweaks, minor additions, etc. to maintain
1039compatibility with the current wxWindows.
1040
1041
1042
1043What's new in 0.5.0
1044-------------------
1045Changed the import semantics from "from wxPython import *" to "from
1046wxPython.wx import *" This is for people who are worried about
1047namespace pollution, they can use "from wxPython import wx" and then
1048prefix all the wxPython identifiers with "wx."
1049
1050Added wxTaskbarIcon for wxMSW.
1051
1052Made the events work for wxGrid.
1053
1054Added wxConfig.
1055
1056Added wxMiniFrame for wxGTK.
1057
1058Changed many of the args and return values that were pointers to gdi
1059objects to references to reflect changes in the wxWindows API.
1060
1061Other assorted fixes and additions.

1066What's new in 0.4.2
1067-------------------
1068
1069wxPython on wxGTK works!!! Both dynamic and static on Linux and
1070static on Solaris have been tested. Many thanks go to Harm
1071<H.v.d.Heijden@phys.tue.nl> for his astute detective work on tracking
1072down a nasty DECREF bug. Okay so I have to confess that it was just a
1073DSM (Dumb Stupid Mistake) on my part but it was nasty none the less
1074because the behavior was so different on different platforms.
1075
1076The dynamicly loaded module on Solaris is still segfaulting, so it
1077must have been a different issue all along...

1081What's New in 0.4
1082-----------------
1083
10841. Worked on wxGTK compatibility. It is partially working. On a
1085Solaris/Sparc box wxPython is working but only when it is statically
1086linked with the Python interpreter. When built as a dyamically loaded
1087extension module, things start acting weirdly and it soon seg-faults.
1088And on Linux both the statically linked and the dynamically linked
1089version segfault shortly after starting up.
1090
10912. Added Toolbar, StatusBar and SplitterWindow classes.
1092
10933. Varioius bug fixes, enhancements, etc.
