1 Recent Changes for wxPython
 
   2 =====================================================================
 
   7 wx.ADJUST_MINSIZE is now the default behaviour for window items in
 
   8 sizers.  This means that the item's GetAdjustedBestSize will be called
 
   9 when calculating layout and the return value from that will be used
 
  10 for the minimum size.  Added wx.FIXED_MINSIZE flag for when you would
 
  11 like the old behavior but you should only need it when your desired
 
  12 size is smaller than the item's GetBestSize.  When a window is added
 
  13 to a sizer it's initial size, if any, is set as the window's minimal
 
  14 size using SetSizeHints if there isn't already a minimal size.
 
  16 Added some convenience methods to wx.Bitmap: SetSize, GetSize, and
 
  17 wx.EmptyBitmap can be called with a wx.Size (or a 2-element sequence)
 
  18 object too.  Similar changes were done for wx.Image as well.
 
  20 Added new MaskedEditControl code from Will Sadkin.  The modules are
 
  21 now locaed in their own sub-package, wx.lib.masked.  Demos updated.

  36 The wxWindows project and library is now known as wxWidgets.  Please

  39 wxwindows.org domain name will be changing to wxwidgets.org, so mail
 
  40 list, CVS, and etc. addresses will be changing.  We're going to try
 
  41 and smooth the transition as much as possible, but I wanted you all to
 
  42 be aware of this change if you run into any issues.
 
  45 Many, many little fixes, changes and additions done as part of the move
 
  46 to wxWidgets 2.5 that I have forgotten about.
 
  52 Added Python wrappers and demos for the new wxVScrolledWindow,

 120 and other PyWin32 modules!  This should eliminate the cronic problems

 123 will be left in this release as the new stuff is not fully backwards
 
 124 compatible, but you should migrate your code to the new IEHtmlWindow

 394 Python exceptions.  When an assert happens a wxPyAssertionError

 397 will be raised.  The same exception restrictions are in place as
 
 398 before, namely that exceptions can't cross from one Python layer

 493     wxWindows/wxPython can be compiled with unicode support enabled or
 
 494     disabled.  Previous to wxPython 2.3.3 non-unicode mode was always
 
 495     used.  Starting with 2.3.3 either mode is supported, but only if
 
 496     it is also available in wxWindows on the platform.  Currently
 
 497     wxWindows only supports unicode on MS Windows platforms, but with
 
 498     the recent release of GTK+ 2.0 it is only a matter of time until
 
 499     it can be done on wxGTK (Linux and other unixes) as well.
 
 501     Unicode works best on platforms in the NT branch of the Windows
 
 502     family tree (NT, win2k, XP) but it is now also possible to use the
 
 503     same unicode binaries on win95/98/ME platforms as well!  This is
 
 504     done by using a special library and DLL with the application
 
 505     called MSLU, (Microsoft Layer for Unicode).  It simply gets out of
 
 506     the way if the app is run on an NT box, otherwise if run on a
 
 507     win9x box it loads a special DLL that provides the unicode
 
 508     versions of the windows API.  So far I have not been able to get
 
 509     this to work perfectly on win9x.  Most things work fine but
 
 510     wxTaskBarIcon for example will cause a crash if used with the
 
 511     unicode build on win95.
 
 513     So how do you use it?  It's very simple.  When unicode is enabled,
 
 514     then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString
 
 515     from the C++ function will return a Python unicode object, and
 
 516     parameters to C++ functions/methods that expect a wxString can
 
 517     accept either a Python string or unicode object.  If a string
 
 518     object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the
 
 519     converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default
 
 520     system encoding.  If you need to use a string in some other
 
 521     encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python
 
 522     codecs first and then pass the unicode string to the wxPython
 
 525 Added wxListCtrlAutoWidthMixin from Erik Westra.
 
 527 Added wxIconBundle and wxTopLevelWindow.SetIcons.

 531 A little black magic...  When the C++ object (for a window or
 
 532 whatever) is deleted there is no way to force the Python shadow object
 
 533 to also be destroyed and clean up all references to it.  This leads to
 
 534 crashes if the shadow object tries to call a method with the old C++
 
 535 pointer.  The black magic I've done is to replace the __class__ in the
 
 536 Python instance object with a class that raises an exception whenever
 
 537 a method call (or other attribute access) is attempted.  This works
 
 538 for any class that is OOR aware.
 
 540 Added OOR support for wxGridCellRenderer, wxGridCellEditor,
 
 541 wxGridCellAttr, wxGridCellAttrProvider, wxGridTableBase and their

 602 modules make a "callback" that they (incorrectly, IMHO) allocate a
 
 603 transient thread state structure.  Since wxPython is now saving
 
 604 tstates for it's own callbacks it ended up using garbage after
 
 605 win32com got rid of the temporary tstate...
 
 607 Added a generic static text control to wxPython.lib.stattext.  This is
 
 608 so things like Boa and PythonCard can have a static text that can
 
 609 respond to mouse events and etc.
 
 611 Changed the wxDateTime.Parse* methods to return an int that will be -1
 
 612 on failure, and the index where parsing stopped otherwise.
 
 614 Moved tools to be a Python package in wxPython.tools, added scripts to
 
 615 import and launch each tool.  This will let you import and use the
 
 616 tools in your own scripts or apps as needed.  On Linux and OS X the

1373 I've finally added a feature that has been on my list for close to two
 
1374 years!  Ever wondered what that zero is for when you create your app
 
1375 object?  Well now you can leave it out or explicitly set it to a true
 
1376 value.  This value now controls what is to be done with sys.stdout and
 
1377 sys.stderr.  A false value leaves them alone, and a true value sets
 
1378 them to an instance of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow.  (On windows the
 
1379 default is true, on unix platforms the default is false.)  This class
 
1380 creates a frame containing a wxTextCtrl as soon as anything is written
 
1381 to sys.stdout or sys.stderr.  If you close the window it will come
 
1382 back again the next time something is written.  (You can call
 
1383 app.RestoreStdio to turn this off.)  If you would rather that the stdio be
 
1384 redirected to a file, you can provide a second parameter to your app
 
1385 object's constructor that is a filename.  If you want to use your own
 
1386 class instead of wxPyOnDemandOutputWindow you can either implement
 
1387 RedirectStdio() in you app class or change the value of
 
1388 wxApp.outputWindowClass like this:
