12
13** If you incorporate a change from somebody on the net:
14First, if it is a large change, you must make sure they have signed
15the appropriate paperwork. Second, be sure to add their name and
16email address to THANKS.
17
e2eb03d4 18** If a change fixes a test, mention the test in the log entry.

19
20** Bug reports
e2eb03d4 21If somebody reports a new bug, mention his name in the log entry
2ed0e35f
AD
22and in the test case you write. Put him into THANKS.
23
24The correct response to most actual bugs is to write a new test case
25which demonstrates the bug. Then fix the bug, re-run the test suite,
26and check everything in.

34** Translations
35Only user visible strings are to be translated: error messages, bits
36of the .output file etc. This excludes impossible error messages
37(comparable to assert/abort), and all the --trace output which is

41* Working from the repository
42
43These notes intend to help people working on the checked-out sources.
44These requirements do not apply when building from a distribution tarball.
45
46** Requirements
47
48We've opted to keep only the highest-level sources in the repository.
49This eases our maintenance burden, (fewer merges etc.), but imposes more
50requirements on anyone wishing to build from the just-checked-out sources.
51For example, you have to use the latest stable versions of the maintainer
52tools we depend upon, including:
53
54- Automake <http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/>
55- Autoconf <http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/>
56- Flex <http://www.gnu.org/software/flex/>
57- Gettext <http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/>
58- Gzip <http://www.gnu.org/software/gzip/>
59- Perl <http://www.cpan.org/>
60- Rsync <http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/>
61- Tar <http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/>
62
63Valgrind <http://valgrind.org/> is also highly recommended, if
64Valgrind supports your architecture.
65
66Bison is written using Bison grammars, so there are bootstrapping
67issues. The bootstrap script attempts to discover when the C code
68generated from the grammars is out of date, and to bootstrap with an
69out-of-date version of the C code, but the process is not foolproof.
70Also, you may run into similar problems yourself if you modify Bison.
71
72Only building the initial full source tree will be a bit painful.
73Later, after synchronizing from the repository a plain `make' should
74be sufficient.
75
76** First checkout
77
78Obviously, if you are reading these notes, you did manage to check out
79this package from the repository. For the record, you will find all the
80relevant information on:
81
82 http://savannah.gnu.org/git/?group=bison
83
84Bison uses Git submodules: subscriptions to other Git repositories.
85In particular it uses gnulib, the GNU portability library. To ask Git
86to perform the first checkout of the submodules, run
87
88 $ git submodule update --init
89
90Git submodule support is weak before versions 1.6 and later, you
91should probably upgrade Git if your version is older.
92
93The next step is to get other files needed to build, which are
94extracted from other source packages:
95
96 $ ./bootstrap
97
98And there you are! Just
99
100 $ ./configure
101 $ make
102 $ make check
103
104At this point, there should be no difference between your local copy,
105and the master copy:
106
107 $ git diff
108
109should output no difference.
110
111Enjoy!
112
113** Updating
114
115The use of submodules make things somewhat different because git does
116not support recursive operations: submodules must be taken care of
117explicitly by the user.
118
119*** Updating Bison
120
121If you pull a newer version of a branch, say via `git pull', you might
122import requests for updated submodules. A simple `git diff' will
123reveal if the current version of the submodule (i.e., the actual
124contents of the gnulib directory) and the current request from the
125subscriber (i.e., the reference of the version of gnulib that the
126Bison reporitory requests) differ. To upgrade the submodules (i.e.,
127to check out the version that is actually requested by the subscriber,
128run `git submodule update'.
129
130 $ git pull
131 $ git submodule update
132
133*** Updating a submodule
134To update a submodule, say gnulib, do as follows:
135
136Get the most recent version of the master branch from git.
137
138 $ cd gnulib
139 $ git fetch
140 $ git checkout -b master --track origin/master
141
142Make sure Bison can live with that version of gnulib.
143
144 $ cd ..
145 $ ./bootstrap
146 $ make distcheck
147
148Register your changes.
149
150 $ git checkin ...

JD
152For a suggestion of what gnulib commit might be stable enough for a
153formal release, see the ChangeLog in the latest gnulib snapshot at:
154
155 http://erislabs.net/ianb/projects/gnulib/
156
157The autoconf files we use are currently:
158
159 m4/m4.m4
160 lib/m4sugar/m4sugar.m4
161 lib/m4sugar/foreach.m4
162
e2eb03d4 163These files don't change very often in Autoconf, so it should be
a898435b
JD
164relatively straight-forward to examine the differences in order to
165decide whether to update.

167* Test suite
168
169** make check
170Use liberally.
171
172** Release checks
173Try to run the test suite with more severe conditions before a
174release:
175
176- Configure the package with --enable-gcc-warnings, so that one checks
177 that 1. Bison compiles cleanly, 2. the parsers it produces compile
178 cleanly too.
179
fb9a3976
JD
180- Build with -DGNULIB_POSIXCHECK. It suggests gnulib modules that can
181 fix portability issues.
182
f377f69f
AD
183- run `make maintainer-check' which:
184 - runs `valgrind -q bison' to run Bison under Valgrind.
1f1b791b 185 - runs the parsers under Valgrind.
f377f69f 186 - runs the test suite with G++ as C compiler...
2ed0e35f 187
9126263e
JD
188- run `make maintainer-push-check', which runs `make maintainer-check'
189 while activating the push implementation and its pull interface wrappers
190 in many test cases that were originally written to exercise only the
191 pull implementation. This makes certain the push implementation can
192 perform every task the pull implementation can.
193
194- run `make maintainer-xml-check', which runs `make maintainer-check'
195 while checking Bison's XML automaton report for every working grammar
196 passed to Bison in the test suite. The check just diffs the output of
197 Bison's included XSLT style sheets with the output of --report=all and
198 --graph.
199
2ed0e35f
AD
200- Change tests/atlocal/CFLAGS to add your preferred options. For
201 instance, `-traditional' to check that the parsers are K&R. Note
202 that it does not make sense for glr.c, which should be ANSI,
548e2104 203 but currently is actually GNU C, nor for lalr1.cc.

206* Release Procedure
207
a898435b
JD
208** Update the submodules. See above.
209
845346b3
JD
210** Update maintainer tools, such as Autoconf. See above.
211
d67e37a7
JD
212** Try to get the *.pot files to the Translation Project at least one
213week before a stable release, to give them time to translate them.
214Before generating the *.pot files, make sure that po/POTFILES.in and
215runtime-po/POTFILES.in list all files with translatable strings.
216This helps: grep -l '\<_(' *
ddc65ffd 217
2ed0e35f
AD
218** Tests
219See above.
220
221** Update the foreign files
e476c87d
PE
222Running `./bootstrap' in the top level should update them all for you.
223This covers PO files too. Sometimes a PO file contains problems that
224causes it to be rejected by recent Gettext releases; please report
225these to the Translation Project.
2ed0e35f 226
548e2104 227** Update README
8ebc7dca
JD
228Make sure the information in README is current. Most notably, make sure
229it recommends a version of GNU M4 that is compatible with the latest
230Bison sources.
231
232** Check copyright years.
233We update years in copyright statements throughout Bison once at the
234start of every year by running `make update-copyright'. However, before
235a release, it's good to verify that it's actually been run. Besides the
236copyright statement for each Bison file, check the copyright statements
237that the skeletons insert into generated parsers, and check all
238occurrences of PACKAGE_COPYRIGHT_YEAR in configure.ac.
548e2104 239
2ed0e35f
AD
240** Update NEWS
241The version number, *and* the date of the release (including for
242betas).
243
e2eb03d4
AD
244** Mention the release name in a commit log
245Should have an entry similar to `Version 2.3b.'.
548e2104 246
548e2104 247** Tag the release
e2eb03d4
AD
248Before Bison will build with the right version number, you must tag
249the release in git. Do this after all other changes. The command is
250similar to:
548e2104
JD
251
252 git tag -a v2.3b
253
254The log message can be simply:
255
256 Bison 2.3b
257
258** Push
259Once `make distcheck' passes, push your changes and the tag.
260`git push' without arguments will not push the tag.
2ed0e35f
AD
261
262** make alpha
548e2104
JD
263FIXME: `make alpha' is not maintained and is broken. These
264instructions need to be replaced or removed.
265
2ed0e35f
AD
266Running `make alpha' is absolutely perfect for beta releases: it makes
267the tarballs, the xdeltas, and prepares (in /tmp/) a proto
268announcement. It is so neat, that that's what I use anyway for
269genuine releases, but adjusting things by hand (e.g., the urls in the
270announcement file, the ChangeLog which is not needed etc.).
271
272If it fails, you're on your own...
273
274It requires GNU Make.
275
276** Upload
548e2104 277The generic GNU upload procedure is at:
2ed0e35f 278
548e2104
JD
279 http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/maintain.html#Automated-FTP-Uploads
280
015e86a7
JD
281Follow the instructions there to register your information so you're permitted
282to upload. Make sure your public key has been uploaded at least to
283keys.gnupg.net. You can upload it with:
284
285 gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --send-keys F125BDF3
286
287where F125BDF3 should be replaced with your key ID.
288
289Here's a brief reminder of how to roll the tarballs and upload them:
548e2104
JD
290
291*** make distcheck
292*** gpg -b bison-2.3b.tar.gz
293*** In a file named `bison-2.3b.tar.gz.directive', type:
294
295 version: 1.1
296 directory: bison
297 filename: bison-2.3b.tar.gz
298
299*** gpg --clearsign bison-2.3b.tar.gz.directive
300*** ftp ftp-upload.gnu.org # Log in as anonymous.
301*** cd /incoming/alpha # cd /incoming/ftp for full release.
302*** put bison-2.3b.tar.gz # This can take a while.
303*** put bison-2.3b.tar.gz.sig
304*** put bison-2.3b.tar.gz.directive.asc
abd189e8 305*** Repeat all these steps for bison-2.3b.tar.xz.
2ed0e35f 306
5bc993d9
JD
307** Update Bison manual on www.gnu.org.
308
309*** You need a non-anonymous checkout of the web pages directory.
310
311 $ cvs -d YOUR_USERID@cvs.savannah.gnu.org:/web/bison checkout bison
312
313*** Get familiar with the instructions for web page maintainers.
314http://www.gnu.org/server/standards/readme_index.html
315http://www.gnu.org/server/standards/README.software.html
316especially the note about symlinks.
317
318*** Build the web pages.
319Assuming BISON_CHECKOUT refers to a checkout of the Bison dir, and
320BISON_WWW_CHECKOUT refers to the web directory created above, do:
321
322 $ cd $BISON_CHECKOUT/doc
323 $ make stamp-vti
324 $ ../build-aux/gendocs.sh -o "$BISON_WWW_CHECKOUT/manual" \
325 bison "Bison - GNU parser generator"
326 $ cd $BISON_WWW_CHECKOUT
327
328Verify that the result looks sane.
329
330*** Commit the modified and the new files.
331
332*** Remove old files.
333Find the files which have not been overwritten (because they belonged to
334sections that have been removed or renamed):
335
336 $ cd manual/html_node
337 $ ls -lt
338
339Remove these files and commit their removal to CVS. For each of these
340files, add a line to the file .symlinks. This will ensure that
341hyperlinks to the removed files will redirect to the entire manual; this
342is better than a 404 error.
343
344There is a problem with 'index.html' being written twice (once for POSIX
345function 'index', once for the table of contents); you can ignore this
346issue.
347
2ed0e35f 348** Announce
548e2104
JD
349To generate a template announcement file:
350
351 make RELEASE_TYPE=alpha gpg_key_ID=F125BDF3 announcement
352
5a3c69f1 353where alpha can be replaced by beta or stable and F125BDF3 should be
83e34842
JD
354replaced with your key ID.
355
356Complete/fix the announcement file. The generated list of recipients
357(info-gnu@gnu.org, bug-bison@gnu.org, help-bison@gnu.org,
358bison-patches@gnu.org, and coordinator@translationproject.org) is
359appropriate for a stable release or a ``serious beta''. For any other
360release, drop at least info-gnu@gnu.org. For an example of how to fill
361out the rest of the template, search the mailing list archives for the
362most recent release announcement.
363
364For a stable release, send the same announcement on the comp.compilers
365newsgroup by sending email to compilers@iecc.com. Do not make any Cc as
366the moderator will throw away anything cross-posted or Cc'ed. It really
367needs to be a separate message.
43a91d61 368
548e2104
JD
369** Bump the version number
370In configure.ac. Run `make'. So that developers don't accidentally add new
371items to the old NEWS entry, create a new empty NEWS entry something like:
372
373 Changes in version ?.? (????-??-??):
374
375Push these changes.
