13** If you incorporate a change from somebody on the net:
14First, if it is a large change, you must make sure they have signed
15the appropriate paperwork. Second, be sure to add their name and
16email address to THANKS.
17
7de42e52 18** If a change fixes a test, mention the test in the commit message.

20** Bug reports
7de42e52 21If somebody reports a new bug, mention his name in the commit message

22and in the test case you write. Put him into THANKS.
23
24The correct response to most actual bugs is to write a new test case
25which demonstrates the bug. Then fix the bug, re-run the test suite,
26and check everything in.

34** Translations
35Only user visible strings are to be translated: error messages, bits
36of the .output file etc. This excludes impossible error messages
37(comparable to assert/abort), and all the --trace output which is
38meant for the maintainers only.

40** Horizontal tabs
41Do not add horizontal tab characters to any file in Bison's repository
42except where required. For example, do not use tabs to format C code.
43However, make files, ChangeLog, and some regular expressions require
44tabs. Also, test cases might need to contain tabs to check that Bison
45properly processes tabs in its input.

48* Working from the repository
49
50These notes intend to help people working on the checked-out sources.
51These requirements do not apply when building from a distribution tarball.
52
53** Requirements
54
55We've opted to keep only the highest-level sources in the repository.
56This eases our maintenance burden, (fewer merges etc.), but imposes more
57requirements on anyone wishing to build from the just-checked-out sources.
58For example, you have to use the latest stable versions of the maintainer
59tools we depend upon, including:
60
61- Automake <http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/>
62- Autoconf <http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/>
63- Flex <http://www.gnu.org/software/flex/>
64- Gettext <http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/>
65- Gzip <http://www.gnu.org/software/gzip/>
66- Perl <http://www.cpan.org/>
67- Rsync <http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/>
68- Tar <http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/>
69
70Valgrind <http://valgrind.org/> is also highly recommended, if
71Valgrind supports your architecture.
72
73Bison is written using Bison grammars, so there are bootstrapping
74issues. The bootstrap script attempts to discover when the C code
75generated from the grammars is out of date, and to bootstrap with an
76out-of-date version of the C code, but the process is not foolproof.
77Also, you may run into similar problems yourself if you modify Bison.
78
79Only building the initial full source tree will be a bit painful.
80Later, after synchronizing from the repository a plain `make' should
81be sufficient.
82
83** First checkout
84
85Obviously, if you are reading these notes, you did manage to check out
86this package from the repository. For the record, you will find all the
87relevant information on:
88
89 http://savannah.gnu.org/git/?group=bison
90
91Bison uses Git submodules: subscriptions to other Git repositories.
92In particular it uses gnulib, the GNU portability library. To ask Git
93to perform the first checkout of the submodules, run
94
95 $ git submodule update --init
96
97Git submodule support is weak before versions 1.6 and later, you
98should probably upgrade Git if your version is older.
99
100The next step is to get other files needed to build, which are
101extracted from other source packages:
102
103 $ ./bootstrap
104
105And there you are! Just
106
107 $ ./configure
108 $ make
109 $ make check
110
111At this point, there should be no difference between your local copy,
112and the master copy:
113
114 $ git diff
115
116should output no difference.
117
118Enjoy!
119
120** Updating
121
122The use of submodules make things somewhat different because git does
123not support recursive operations: submodules must be taken care of
124explicitly by the user.
125
126*** Updating Bison
127
128If you pull a newer version of a branch, say via `git pull', you might
129import requests for updated submodules. A simple `git diff' will
130reveal if the current version of the submodule (i.e., the actual
131contents of the gnulib directory) and the current request from the
132subscriber (i.e., the reference of the version of gnulib that the
133Bison reporitory requests) differ. To upgrade the submodules (i.e.,
134to check out the version that is actually requested by the subscriber,
135run `git submodule update'.
136
137 $ git pull
138 $ git submodule update
139
140*** Updating a submodule
141To update a submodule, say gnulib, do as follows:
142
143Get the most recent version of the master branch from git.
144
145 $ cd gnulib
146 $ git fetch
147 $ git checkout -b master --track origin/master
148
149Make sure Bison can live with that version of gnulib.
150
151 $ cd ..
152 $ ./bootstrap
153 $ make distcheck
154
155Register your changes.
156
157 $ git checkin ...
158
a801089c
JD
159For a suggestion of what gnulib commit might be stable enough for a
160formal release, see the ChangeLog in the latest gnulib snapshot at:
161
162 http://erislabs.net/ianb/projects/gnulib/
163
164The autoconf files we use are currently:
165
166 m4/m4.m4
167 lib/m4sugar/m4sugar.m4
168 lib/m4sugar/foreach.m4
169
e2eb03d4 170These files don't change very often in Autoconf, so it should be
a801089c
JD
171relatively straight-forward to examine the differences in order to
172decide whether to update.

174* Test suite
175
176** make check
177Use liberally.
178
179** Release checks
180Try to run the test suite with more severe conditions before a
181release:
182
183- Configure the package with --enable-gcc-warnings, so that one checks
184 that 1. Bison compiles cleanly, 2. the parsers it produces compile
185 cleanly too.
186
5c99151a
JD
187- Build with -DGNULIB_POSIXCHECK. It suggests gnulib modules that can
188 fix portability issues.
189
a0cd287e
AD
190- Check with `make syntax-check' if there are issues diagnosed by
191 gnulib.
192
f377f69f
AD
193- run `make maintainer-check' which:
194 - runs `valgrind -q bison' to run Bison under Valgrind.
1f1b791b 195 - runs the parsers under Valgrind.
f377f69f 196 - runs the test suite with G++ as C compiler...
2ed0e35f 197
9126263e
JD
198- run `make maintainer-push-check', which runs `make maintainer-check'
199 while activating the push implementation and its pull interface wrappers
200 in many test cases that were originally written to exercise only the
201 pull implementation. This makes certain the push implementation can
202 perform every task the pull implementation can.
203
204- run `make maintainer-xml-check', which runs `make maintainer-check'
205 while checking Bison's XML automaton report for every working grammar
206 passed to Bison in the test suite. The check just diffs the output of
207 Bison's included XSLT style sheets with the output of --report=all and
208 --graph.
209
a0cd287e
AD
210- running `make maintainer-release-check' takes care of running
211 maintainer-check, maintainer-push-check and maintainer-xml-check.
212
2ed0e35f
AD
213- Change tests/atlocal/CFLAGS to add your preferred options. For
214 instance, `-traditional' to check that the parsers are K&R. Note
215 that it does not make sense for glr.c, which should be ANSI,
548e2104 216 but currently is actually GNU C, nor for lalr1.cc.
2ed0e35f 217
95611b56
JD
218- Test with a very recent version of GCC for both C and C++. Testing
219 with older versions that are still in use is nice too.

222* Release Procedure
223
a801089c
JD
224** Update the submodules. See above.
225
c12aa01f
JD
226** Update maintainer tools, such as Autoconf. See above.
227
e32050b0
JD
228** Try to get the *.pot files to the Translation Project at least one
229week before a stable release, to give them time to translate them.
230Before generating the *.pot files, make sure that po/POTFILES.in and
231runtime-po/POTFILES.in list all files with translatable strings.
232This helps: grep -l '\<_(' *
ddc65ffd 233
2ed0e35f
AD
234** Tests
235See above.
236
237** Update the foreign files
e476c87d
PE
238Running `./bootstrap' in the top level should update them all for you.
239This covers PO files too. Sometimes a PO file contains problems that
240causes it to be rejected by recent Gettext releases; please report
241these to the Translation Project.
2ed0e35f 242
548e2104 243** Update README
80b70223
JD
244Make sure the information in README is current. Most notably, make sure
245it recommends a version of GNU M4 that is compatible with the latest
246Bison sources.
247
248** Check copyright years.
249We update years in copyright statements throughout Bison once at the
250start of every year by running `make update-copyright'. However, before
251a release, it's good to verify that it's actually been run. Besides the
252copyright statement for each Bison file, check the copyright statements
253that the skeletons insert into generated parsers, and check all
254occurrences of PACKAGE_COPYRIGHT_YEAR in configure.ac.
548e2104 255
2ed0e35f
AD
256** Update NEWS
257The version number, *and* the date of the release (including for
258betas).
259
7de42e52 260** Mention the release name in a commit message
e2eb03d4 261Should have an entry similar to `Version 2.3b.'.
548e2104 262
548e2104 263** Tag the release
e2eb03d4
AD
264Before Bison will build with the right version number, you must tag
265the release in git. Do this after all other changes. The command is
266similar to:
548e2104
JD
267
268 git tag -a v2.3b
269
7de42e52 270The commit message can be simply:
548e2104
JD
271
272 Bison 2.3b
273
274** Push
275Once `make distcheck' passes, push your changes and the tag.
276`git push' without arguments will not push the tag.
2ed0e35f
AD
277
278** make alpha
548e2104
JD
279FIXME: `make alpha' is not maintained and is broken. These
280instructions need to be replaced or removed.
281
2ed0e35f
AD
282Running `make alpha' is absolutely perfect for beta releases: it makes
283the tarballs, the xdeltas, and prepares (in /tmp/) a proto
284announcement. It is so neat, that that's what I use anyway for
285genuine releases, but adjusting things by hand (e.g., the urls in the
286announcement file, the ChangeLog which is not needed etc.).
287
288If it fails, you're on your own...
289
290It requires GNU Make.
291
292** Upload
548e2104 293The generic GNU upload procedure is at:
2ed0e35f 294
548e2104
JD
295 http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/maintain.html#Automated-FTP-Uploads
296
06c3084f
JD
297Follow the instructions there to register your information so you're permitted
298to upload. Make sure your public key has been uploaded at least to
299keys.gnupg.net. You can upload it with:
300
301 gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --send-keys F125BDF3
302
303where F125BDF3 should be replaced with your key ID.
304
305Here's a brief reminder of how to roll the tarballs and upload them:
548e2104
JD
306
307*** make distcheck
308*** gpg -b bison-2.3b.tar.gz
309*** In a file named `bison-2.3b.tar.gz.directive', type:
310
311 version: 1.1
312 directory: bison
313 filename: bison-2.3b.tar.gz
314
315*** gpg --clearsign bison-2.3b.tar.gz.directive
316*** ftp ftp-upload.gnu.org # Log in as anonymous.
317*** cd /incoming/alpha # cd /incoming/ftp for full release.
318*** put bison-2.3b.tar.gz # This can take a while.
319*** put bison-2.3b.tar.gz.sig
320*** put bison-2.3b.tar.gz.directive.asc
b55b6860 321*** Repeat all these steps for bison-2.3b.tar.xz.
2ed0e35f 322
1c93f35b
JD
323** Update Bison manual on www.gnu.org.
324
325*** You need a non-anonymous checkout of the web pages directory.
326
327 $ cvs -d YOUR_USERID@cvs.savannah.gnu.org:/web/bison checkout bison
328
329*** Get familiar with the instructions for web page maintainers.
330http://www.gnu.org/server/standards/readme_index.html
331http://www.gnu.org/server/standards/README.software.html
332especially the note about symlinks.
333
334*** Build the web pages.
335Assuming BISON_CHECKOUT refers to a checkout of the Bison dir, and
336BISON_WWW_CHECKOUT refers to the web directory created above, do:
337
338 $ cd $BISON_CHECKOUT/doc
339 $ make stamp-vti
340 $ ../build-aux/gendocs.sh -o "$BISON_WWW_CHECKOUT/manual" \
341 bison "Bison - GNU parser generator"
342 $ cd $BISON_WWW_CHECKOUT
343
344Verify that the result looks sane.
345
346*** Commit the modified and the new files.
347
348*** Remove old files.
349Find the files which have not been overwritten (because they belonged to
350sections that have been removed or renamed):
351
352 $ cd manual/html_node
353 $ ls -lt
354
355Remove these files and commit their removal to CVS. For each of these
356files, add a line to the file .symlinks. This will ensure that
357hyperlinks to the removed files will redirect to the entire manual; this
358is better than a 404 error.
359
360There is a problem with 'index.html' being written twice (once for POSIX
361function 'index', once for the table of contents); you can ignore this
362issue.
363
2ed0e35f 364** Announce
548e2104
JD
365To generate a template announcement file:
366
367 make RELEASE_TYPE=alpha gpg_key_ID=F125BDF3 announcement
368
96a381c5 369where alpha can be replaced by beta or stable and F125BDF3 should be
e35bc778
JD
370replaced with your key ID.
371
372Complete/fix the announcement file. The generated list of recipients
373(info-gnu@gnu.org, bug-bison@gnu.org, help-bison@gnu.org,
374bison-patches@gnu.org, and coordinator@translationproject.org) is
375appropriate for a stable release or a ``serious beta''. For any other
376release, drop at least info-gnu@gnu.org. For an example of how to fill
377out the rest of the template, search the mailing list archives for the
378most recent release announcement.
379
380For a stable release, send the same announcement on the comp.compilers
381newsgroup by sending email to compilers@iecc.com. Do not make any Cc as
382the moderator will throw away anything cross-posted or Cc'ed. It really
383needs to be a separate message.
43a91d61 384
548e2104
JD
385** Bump the version number
386In configure.ac. Run `make'. So that developers don't accidentally add new
387items to the old NEWS entry, create a new empty NEWS entry something like:
388
389 Changes in version ?.? (????-??-??):
390
391Push these changes.
